The price of pasta in the UK has nearly doubled in two years, new research for the BBC suggests.
A standard 500g bag of pasta was 50p two years ago - now it's 95p.
The BBC has been tracking the cost of a small basket of 15 everyday essentials, from oven chips and strawberry jam to pasta sauce and potatoes. The total has gone up by £5.34 - from £15.79 in 2021 to £21.13 in 2023.
Official figures suggest overall UK inflation may have peaked at 11.1% in October. But the rate of food price rises is still running at 16.7%.

Cost of transportation is one of the reasons why prices are inflated. Meats, a monopoly on slaughter houses. Chickens,eggs of course you know, the avian flu. Three times the price of normal. In turn any item that uses eggs, you see a substantial price increase.

In a nutshell, give suits a reason to raise prices and it will be instantaneous. Give suits a reason to reduce prices, aka give up margin, and It's watching molasses in January. Oil prices are just about back to pre-Putin prices. But ask why the stuff that went up is not coming down and you get this guy telling you 'it's complicated' (read yer too stupid to understand). Wasn't complicated when prices went up on the spot. The only way to change the price is to change demand ... stop buying stuff.

You can store pasta in airtight boxes for a long time, saving you money. Some of these popular items shouldn't be all you eat, some aren't that good for you. In fact this list just shows how bad some people's diets are. Some mean person tried to buy too many tomatoes in a supermarket, I was in the other day. They had been told they couldn't and left them at the payment counter, so I swapped out my tomatoes which were the more expensive ones, for the ones I actually wanted, and unlike them, put the ones I didn't want back on the tomato stand. I also got a box of cress out of their greediness. I actually use salad all year round and rarely fail to use it all up. There was also a lettuce, but it had been bashed around and wasn't a variety I buy. Stop buying too much fresh stuff, you can't always store it like dried goods, tins, bottles or frozen food, it wasteful and selfish, the supermarket is full of other people, who may want it more than you do, like those tomatoes and that cress. 🙄

It's all normal and it's just the beginning. When in 1991 USSR was split into 15 independent states, it was a harsh violation of Helsinki Accords 1975. No single country raised their voice. Everyone was happy. Now, it's time to pay. And in capitalism, the ones who gonna pay are working class people not capitalists.

No nutritional value in Wheat. Are they using round up on Wheat?
@giglioflex
@giglioflex Жыл бұрын
Wheat provides protiens, carbs, fiber, and a variety of other nutrients assuming you eat whole wheat. Wheat in and of itself isn't bad, it's when it's over-processed that it looses more of it's nutritional value. It's also typically used to make things like biscuits and baked goods that add more unhealthy ingredients. Then again you can bastardize any grain really.
@Captain.Pugwash
@Captain.Pugwash Жыл бұрын
@@giglioflex exactly. It's only unhealthy when the food industry strips the grain of most of the nutrition by refining/processing. People misunderstand that.

Is there a shortage of wheat that is fuelling the price of pasta?
@giglioflex
@giglioflex Жыл бұрын
It could be related to Russia blocking Ukraine from selling it's wheat. While it's not able to do so as consistently anymore, when you interrupt such a major supplier it's going to have an impact on the broader market. Not saying that it's the sole cause of the issue but companies along the supply chain have to worry about one of Europe's largest wheat exporters dissapearing including their investments so this uncertainty means higher prices. The UK itself does not import much wheat from Ukraine but that doesn't stop it from constraining supplies or impacting companies who are involved in the supply chain for this commodity so at the end of the day it results in higher prices for everyone.

Poland has taken over a million Ukrainian refugees. Nowhere near as many problems with heating homes there as here. It's almost as if refugees have nothing to do with price rises and if you directed your anger instead at the energy companies recording record profits and the tory government who is literally enabling them... maybe something would change.

After the recession of the early 1980's, the United States Government began manipulating economic policies in a way that resulted in longer periods of economic growth, each longer than the last... but then followed by a near-catastrophic economic meltdown. 1987, 2008, 2020. Before then, economic growth cycles were much smaller (2-4 years, tops), followed by brief and by comparison far less drastic recessionary periods (usually lasting 6 months or less and, quite often, not even being realized they'd occurred until after the fact). Perhaps the old guys pre-1980 knew what they were doing better than those who've come since, huh?

USA and Europe managed to get away from recession in ~1993 because after collapse of USSR in 1991 they got access to natural resources and consumer market of the largest country in the world. Everyone was happy apart from a few dozens of millions of ex USSR citizens who became beggars overnight. But who cares. It's the way capitalism works. The rich become richer, and the poor become poorer. And now this process manifests itself in Europe and USA. Enjoy.
