You got to give credit to Pat for the show being mainly about American football he still got a soccer/football guy on the show to help him spread awareness about the European super league to non Soccer/football fans and why people hate it while ESPN would mention it once and then 5 seconds after they would talk about LeBron and how his diet and habits would affect his play and then talk about something random. This shows needs more respect and attention even when they mainly talk about a sport most people don’t play or watch they still do things better than Skip and ESPN.

Kind of but an FBS team can’t be relegated to fCS. In Europe Teams can get relegated if they finish near the bottom of their league. But the point about the top teams breaking off is spot on. It’d be like my team Iowa state getting to the point where they could make the playoff which is kinda a possibility now and the top teams colluding so they can always be in their own playoff. I’m from the UK and my team is Swansea. We are in the championship which is one league below the premier league. Now if we play well enough to get promoted it’ll mean virtually nothing because we can’t compete against the best clubs because the top 6 will likely be kicked out of the premier league and they’ll be in the super league which we won’t be able to reach. The premier league will mean less, it means less money being involved so the teams that aren’t in the super league will loose out and no matter how bad the teams in the super league are they’ll never loose out. It’s a money grab and greed in its purest form

Super league is basically the NFL. You have teams tanking with no consequences/ relegation.
@maxgrieve
@maxgrieve 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this comment. Exactly this. And the replies to this comment too. Us Europeans do appreciate how/why the North American model for domestic sports is different, but it's still possible to extract pretty identical parallels - these are the richest and (in recent years) strongest teams looking to entrench their financial and competitive advantage just because a) they dislike the uncertainty of maybe not making their equivalent of playoffs every season and b) not every regular season game can be made to look like box office gold. The result? Those teams become exponentially more attracttive to the best players, due to them being able to offer increasingly bigger wages and - the most basic point of the Super League project - exclusive participation in a lucrative tournament with a huge audience. The Super League claiming they'd simply run alongside existing competitions isn't the point: if these teams disproportionately suck up the best players, they'll then have an in-built advantage in those competitions too. It's also worth remembering British and Eurpoean soccer doesn't have competitive control valves like player drafts or wage caps. Money and prestige is king. But yeah, otherwise it's just a question of scale. The UK soccer league might have 92 teams - and even that isn't a fully closed shop - but I imagine you'd get the same outrage if 6 of the NFL teams tried to screw over the other 26.
@blakjjags0697

@@albatrossyglossy the difference is, the nfl has always been that way, which is why it works, if you tried to implement promotion and relegation into American leagues it wouldn’t work and wouldn’t be accepted, but the super league was trying to make European teams, who don’t use this format, use this format, so it doesn’t work, and there’s 1000s upon 1000s of professional football teams but only 32 professional nfl teams, that’s why the nfl work and the super league doesn’t

And keep calm people: 1) it wont be a closed competition, yes there will be a relegation system, but it will just be a more closed one for the moment 2) It’s not clear that it will happen 3) The only reason domestic leagues seem to be on hack is because of the aggresive threats by UEFA, but these are clearly bluffs 4) The UEFA mafia are raging and influencing most people, because they and their robbing system are the ones actually in danger here, they just don’t want to negotiate, so keep calm and don’t let them blind you 5) This is just going to end up in a change in format/name of the european competition, clubs like sheffield are not affected by these lmao if not through UEFA hurting everyone by kicking the teams that generate 80% of the revenue out of the leagues

It pretty much has been Alabama, Clemson, LSU, and Oklahoma every year. That's why I don't pay attention to college football much anymore. I was hopeful that we'd get an actual playoff years ago, but instead we get committee rankings that put the same teams in the playoff and top 10 every year, because those programs have the most money and buy all of the 5 star recruits. NFL has much more parity and no arbitrary rankings, and is way more interesting because of it.

The American League System is a lot better in my opinion. Yes everyone gets more money each and every year, but what I noticed was that EVERY team would get the same chances. For example the salary cap would make it quite hard for teams to go over it (for example with all the luxury taxes being in place in the NBA) In European soccer however, what I've noticed is that your success is LITERALLY defined by the money you're willing to invest in your franchise. I've lived in Germany my whole life and the last time that a team not named Munich won the league, i had just finished elementary school. In England it's quite similar.. while there is more of a competition at the top, you can always bet that one of the same 3 or 4 teams will win the season. There is hardly ever any cinderella stories like the Miami Heat upsetting the whole Eastern Conference in 2020 or the Steelers falling apart in Wildcard Weekend. The only (kind of) interesting competition in european soccer for me would be the Champions League or the Europe League. But even there, at some point you come to realize that the only teams succeeding are the ones that put in the most money. There is no talent on poor teams, because that talent quickly follows the money into the european superhouse teams. That Nigel dude in the interview is COMPLETELY right with everything he said, but i believe that the phrase "the rich get richter and the poor get poorer" already applied before this Superleague nonsense.

@Ryan Turner there's no doubt about that.. it's not about getting away from it. Money makes the world go round.. it's about drawing the line and knowing when enough is enough. And it's not even about the money.. it's about the greed that comes with it. Football is a worldwide enterprise and deservedly so. It takes those businessesmen and women to make it happen. But this elite-ists mentality has made the giant clubs drunk with power. And the coaches, players, and fans have to suffer as a result. It's sickening.. at least to me.

It just blows my mind that their medicine for it accomplishes the exact opposite.. like you said, rich get richer. All these billions that were raised to jumpstart this SL could've been incrementally invested into franchises. It won't solve the problem immediately but at least it's a step in the right direction. No The real best team in the province are too busy trying to win regionals The best team in the regionals are actually not playing the regionals but trying to win the nationals But the national team is where it stops The national level teams try to both win in europe and locally in their region at the same time Each national league agreed with each other that UEFA is the middle ground to challenge each other in european stage while keep competing in nationals Here comes this new thing The want to break this actual state of affairs between national leagues and UEFA And own the european tournament The nationals league agreed on having UEFA as a middle ground to compete in europe while also fighting in nationals league But the teams owners want to be more power than each league they are currently belonging to and create their own league above UEFA and also the national league The idea is the owners believe they're too powerful or at least their teams are too important to be cancelled from their national league So nationally they would have the leverage to whatever they want But on european stage UEFA is more powerful than them individually Thus Uniting to create their own league in which the teams are owners and not the national leagues This is potentially a move that would allow the owners to also dominate over UEFA And if they succeed in doing so The UEFA could potentially be irrelevant Each national league would or could potentially highly devalue But theorically football could finally have a league that can rival NFL and NBA in terms of concentration of players talent We know that the top 100 NFL players are the top 100 players in the world We know the top 100 basketball players on the planet are probably all in NBA roosters But Right now the top 100 players in the world Some are in bundes a lot in premier a lot in la Liga some in italy a few in france and other few in America And occasionally they play in UEFA but not every years because sometimes some of them can't carry their team to enter the UEFA or they are still in America

If you look at the NFL with guaranteed money for teams, there has been a certain set of teams where it doesn’t matter if they win or lose, as long as they get paid. Boxing in 15-20 of the best teams in football wouldn’t have made them play better. The reason they have to work hard now is so the Leicester’s, West Ham’s, and Everton’s don’t take their champions league spots that they now are regularly doing.

Basically, England is about the size of Alabama. Currently there are 92 professional teams in the top 4 leagues in England with another 276 teams in the 4 levels below that. All of those 368 teams could win the top league, our equivalent of the Superbowl, (though it would take years and is increasingly unrealistic for those at the bottom). This news is going to change 368 English teams who can win the league to 6, who will never change. Sure, 6 teams is 6 more than Alabama have in the NFL but most of those 368 teams are 100 years old with history and community links that go back generations. Also, imagine hearing that the Packers and the Bears won’t meet again but maybe the Packers will form a rivalry with a team from Spain. This sucks hugely

It's not a particularly fair statement though - among the big drivers are Real Madrid and Barcelona who are owned locally. The tragedy is that it doubles down on something that Real and Barca did decades ago - they created a TV deal that gave them the lions share of the profits to the detriment of the rest of the clubs in La Liga, and now the number of games worth watching in that league is tiny because the smaller clubs can't hang on to any talented player. Their short term greed has heavily damaged a lot of clubs, and the ESL is the same approach - draw all the money in to a small group of teams with no thought of the wider ecosystem. I can't blame the US owners, as Nigel was arguing, it makes great sense on a balance sheet, my greater contempt is for the Spanish clubs attempting to avoid their impending bankruptcies from years of overspending despite having done a big resource grab

So much respect to Pat for having a topic like this on his show and having the other side speak out to why this isn’t a good thing for futbol! And not doing what other programs do by cutting off the expert every other minute! He let Nigel speak and and rant and try to inform people like Pat who just see big name teams and just assume this will be an amazing thing without realizing how much this will hurt futbol as a whole!

This league is comparative to if the cowboys, patriots, and the other popular NFL teams decided they would play in the NFL season, but formed a separate playoff only they can enter, regardless of record. They also get more significantly more cap space than all the teams not in the playoff to sign all the best players.

Arsenal is tied for 9th in the premier league, and Liverpool just drew with the team tied with arsenal in points. Chelsea are struggling to get into the top 4, and United is playing in the 2nd tier of European football. Tottenham just fired their manager this morning. Man city just got knocked out of the fa cup.

Im a liverpool fan from liverpool, and yes these teams which are breaking away to the super league havent been the greatest this season, it doesnt take away from the fact that these 6 are the teams which bring the most eyes and revenue into the premier league. Just because liverpool drew 1-1 with leeds today doesnt mean they suddenly arent a big club. The idea that the top 6 must win every game they ever have otherwise they cant be a top 6 club is stupid. (btw i am strongly against the idea of the super league, but the fact you are choosing certain poor results these teams have had this season to imply these teams arent the top 6 teams in the league is stupid.)

@@Claricio these self proclaimed super clubs are struggling in their domestic leagues. Tottenham, arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea. I’m a Chelsea fan and we’re on the verge of missing the champions league. Let’s not even talk about arsenal and Tottenham. They’ve been in shambles for decades. Liverpool had one good season last season and is back to struggling.

I think college sports more closely resemble the culture of soccer this is how I explained it to my friend: So imagine if Alabama, LSU, Clemson, Auburn, USC, Oregon, Oklahoma, Michigan, Ohio State, Texas, Penn State, Florida, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Georgia and Tennesee all got together and just said "We are just going to play each other from here on out." No more rankings or competing, no more upsets, no more fun.

Football is nothing like American sports. In American sports you have 30 more or less equal teams and you have drafts to fairly allow all teams to get better players. In football if this goes ahead these clubs will have so much money compared to others that there will be no-one capable of competing with them. It will effectively kill domestic football.

As a season ticket holder of an English team in Division 4, this Super League would kill our pyramid system we've protected for 150 years because 12 clubs think they have an elite right to money. Most watched sport in the world, promotion and relegation is a must and these wanting a franchised league spits on every tradition. Without them, the money from broadcasting dies, that money won't trickle down the tiers and it will kill lots of clubs. 92 professional teams in England and 6 want a monopoly.

As an American, the pyramid system is my favorite thing about soccer/football. I watched my local team go unbeaten in a season, win the championship in the playoffs and they stayed in the same league. I'm glad West Ham wasn't a part of this or I'd find another club to support in England.
