Daniel King I think that narrative is bogus and further devalues the RB position. So it’s OK to overpay these average QBs? What has Cousin done for the Vikings with the $80 million guaranteed ? Case Keanum took the Vikings further in the playoffs than Cousins did and Case was on a Walmart basement type deal. What has Matthew Stafford done with the $100 million dollars that he has made in his career? This past season, he made close to if not $30 million dollars and the Lions only won 3 games. So what difference does it make. Andrew luck was given $24 million just to walk away but Derrick Henry and every other RB gets ran into the ground and only get a small fraction of what these overpaid QBs get and it is somehow justified. Henry literally carried the team to the AFC championship game and Tannehill gets the big money with a seven game sample size. It’s not like he won a Super Bowl when he used to play for Miami and don’t forget he also got big money over there too

I could be wrong but I ran into this, the two different guarantees, once before and when I looked into it, it went something along the lines of this. The standard guarantee (the bigger of the two numbers) covers football related injury. If he gets hurt day one, that guaranteed number is still owed to him. The 'full' guaranteed number (the smaller one) covers just about everything, they could cut him tomorrow he still gets the full guaranteed number.

If you look deeper into the contract itself, the contract is essentially a two year, 62 mil contract. They are franchising Henry to run it back one more year and see if they both do have success. The Titans are playing this smart and playing the long game. Unless Tannehill sets the league on fire the next two years and takes the offense away from Henry as far as being the engine of the offense, I think Tennessee makes a play for one of the top QB's in this years draft or next years draft and then moves on from Tannehill after 2021.

Big deals to RBs after a big season almost never work out. The only recent RBs I can remember that were worth big contracts were Adrian Peterson and LT (and maybe Barkley down the line if he stays healthy). There are just so many serviceable RBs you can get and/or RB committees for much cheaper. A decent QB is a much rarer commodity and has a bigger impact overall on a team's overall outlook.

And *that* is how the Titans will have screwed themselves - they'll have maybe one more good season (similar to Kirk Cousins in Minnesota), but will get no closer to the Superbowl than they did this past season. Tannehill has no history of consistent (season after season) play to base these numbers on - just one reasonably successful season where he got to the conference championship. This is going to go down in NFL history as a magnificently stupid piece of mismanagement on the part of the Titans brass; I'm not saying that Ryan doesn't have some skills... just not $118 million dollars worth of skills. Having said that, it is very likely this was all predicated on Brady deciding he isn't going anywhere that doesn't have a warm climate and a beach in close proximity - hence why Tampa Bay would publicly state they're making an all-out effort to sign him, and San Francisco is still in the discussion. Derrick Henry has had a more consistent record of production in his career, and you can bet they will lose him after this deal - and with him, the real heart of their offense. Mike Vrabel has just gone from genius to dunce in a single clumsy stumble.
