I find the games art and mechanics charming on the base level, but actually playing it threw me for a bit of a loop as many of these videos start up with some slow puzzling content and I was expecting a gradual increase in difficulty, but the first patch of map I explored immediately became a twin-stick bullet hell and I put the game down after half an hour. I do plan to come back to it and play more, but the game went from 0 to 9000 way too fast for me to initially get a good grasp of the controls.

Have you tried changing the difficulty in the settings? It could make your experience less painful and let you learn the game at a more tranquil pace, and you're not locked in it you can deactivate it later(or keep it if that is how you enjoy the game).
