Loved getting this extended peek at this amazing watch! To say the 5236 is out of my price range is the understatement of this and/or any other century but I absolutely love this mechanical marvel! Mechanical perpetual calendar watches are a real fascination of mine and to see an in line one is truly remarkable. Wholly unnecessary in this day and age of course but what a wonderful little machine.

It won’t get there, one big problem with almost every perpetual calendar watch is that they need to be maintained every 5 years if you ware them daily, so they’re not that perpetual

@anthonystevens86832 жыл бұрын
This isn't just a watch, it's a work of art. Incredibly complicated but simple on the eye and for what achieves is worth an Oscar. The 'problem' with engineers is that they like to do difficult and complicated things that are not always something that the end user really wants and there sometimes seems to be tension between what the market really wants and what the engineers want to do. The execution of this watch oozes harmony between the two. Sign off a design spec and then develop it. Often that up front spec is incomplete before development has had to start to meet deadlines and tension increases.

Seiko and Grand Seiko make everything in-house.
@valengreymoon56232 жыл бұрын
One thing is missing, I think. There should be vertical separation bars between the day, date and month, to look like a neat little framed window, and to cover up those slits that can be clearly seen through.
@WristyGymnast2 жыл бұрын
Would that not make the dial space bigger and disproportionate, whist at the same time make the actual date text smaller and less legible?
@valengreymoon56232 жыл бұрын
Not if it's done properly. It would be only a couple of vertical spacers, maybe 1- 1.5mm long, and would fit right inside the window, taking up no extra space.
@WristyGymnast2 жыл бұрын
@@valengreymoon5623 how can you possibly insert something that doesn’t take up space? Try drawing it, keep the proportions the same (text spacing, size) I don’t think you’re taking into account that your separation bars can’t be any thickness, they have to be aesthetically proportional to the rest of the window
@valengreymoon56232 жыл бұрын
Let me clarify. I was talking about from the factory, not a home-done mod. If Seiko can do it, I'm pretty sure Patek could as well.
@WristyGymnast2 жыл бұрын
@@valengreymoon5623 oh yeah, I was suggesting you home mod $170k watch 😂 You’re wrong, I can’t find a separated day date month window with ‘bars’. I think you’re confusing a frame around the whole window. Link one if I’m wrong, happy to be corrected. Also, Seiko’s aesthetics and quality are trash, even Grand Seiko can’t do this level of complication.

I agree that window display work very well for calendar complications. It makes for a much cleaner layout. But I have issues with this particular window soulution: (1) they actually have a "big date" complication (with the 2 digits of the date on 2 seperate wheels). This is an extra complication which allows the date to be bigger. But they don't make use of it. The date still is rather small. Look for ALS on how to properly make use of this complication (2) There actually seems to be dirt (!) between the different disks of the date display. (you can clearly see it at 7:58). (3) such a beautiful blue dial. And then they ruin it by putting ugly white wheels in the date window. (4) The wheels are set in such a way that makes the date acutally rather unpleasent to read. In the PP annual calendars they have date/month/day in seperate windwos - which looks much better. (and would have solved the dirt issue as well).

That Nautilus day wheel/window looks wrong to me in my mind numbers 1,3,5 and 7 the bottom of the numbers are around the edge of the wheel/window Then they reverse at 9 and the top of the numbers are now going around the edge of the wheel/window. So to me at a quick glance when I first looked, it looked like the 9 was a 6 so maybe they should made the change at 11. They have reverse the other wheels/windows too I suppose this is made this way so you do not read numbers, days and months upside down? But still looks odd to my mind.

The problems with perpetual calendar watches prove the superiority of time only watches. Everything else is a distraction. The Patek Philippe In-line Perpetual Calendar 5236P is an efficient but inelegant solution. The date window squeezes the letters and numbers of clashing widths into a space fit for tinned anchovies.
