Very cool what they've done and you've done an amazing job selling us on it. Really put Christopher Ward on the map for me. Not because they're "cheap", but because it makes me feel they do what they do for the art of mechanical watches. There's no marketing talk, there's no doing things the certain way only because it sounds good on paper and allows the price to be inflated. It feels honest which is something more brands could do with.

I learned of this release late and missed out on the Azul dial sadly. I've admired Christopher Ward from afar for 2 years now. I do not own one. I have awaited a final product bereft of the old logo, something more understated, and witnessed the progression of the brand. They are absolutely taking off. So, this morning when I saw an email from CW I did not hesitate, didn't even think. I placed my order for the Verde dial as fast as possible. Now to see my favorite horological KZbin channel feature the timepiece I am absolutely floored and brimming with excitement. This will be such a joy and pleasure to adorn on my wrist and train my ear to listen for the chime. In the key of D. A drop of sun. Bravo CW. This truly is your finest hour.

So basically CW showed the big boys that horology, isn't out of reach and innovation is not just making a watch more water resistant. My favorite detail about the Bel Canto is NO logos. What a feat, and Christopher Ward makes no apologies. He lets the watch do the talking. Conversely, though Grand Seiko makes excellent watches, they use three different clashing fonts for their SEIKO, GS, and GRAND SEIKO logos, an eyesore. Spring drive aside, Grand Seiko's design acumen pales in comparison to their European counterparts. Christopher Ward has taste. On the Bel Canto, however, there is no reason to say "Swiss Made" either.

As a Christopher Ward owner - I've a 1000m Titanium diver and one of their Sealanders - and having interacted with Rolex, Omega, and other traditional luxury brands, I'll say that for a 1/3rd the price you can get 85-95% the quality of entry level watches from those companies without a waiting list, and without needing to live near watch boutiques. They're one of the best value to quality propositions from and established brand in the swiss-made watch space. And their cunning little tinkerers too. I still contend that the Sealander is the best all round, quality, no-frills office/business watch one the market. It's clean, visibly well made, attractive, and doesn't scream "I'm a status symbol" like a lot of other brands. It's a watch that people notice as nice, and it says "I care about my tools, I'm selective, and I'm down to earth." and that's quite hard to do at those quality levels.

@kevinleighuk2 жыл бұрын
Great review! I've ordered one of the blue dial versions (the last in the series, No.300 in fact). I love a mechanical watch with a novel or unusual complexity. Having been wearing an Apple Ultra lately that chimes on the hour, it is actually useful to note the passage of time during the day by the hour striking. So the idea of an hourly chime (as opposed to a minute repeater - leaving aside the complexity and cost of such movements) sounded useful. I already own several CW watches inc the C60 Concept with the SH21 movement. The Concept is very well made and finished. As another titanium watch, I appreciate the comfort and lightness of this material. While this watch is marmite to some (usually because people don't like that CW released a green dial LE version immediately after launching the blue dial version which sold out in 8 hours - only to be followed by the green dial selling out in even less time!) it is once again an opportunity for people to buy something innovative at a price far below what might be charged by more well-known brands and made in Switzerland as opposed to being made (or copied) elsewhere at bargain prices with poor quality control. Frankly, I love to support a British watchmaker/designer and I love how CW keeps it feet on the ground through direct selling. The fact that they are British designed and bulit in Switzerland doesn't bother me. Switzerland, like for example Germany and Japan (and England of course), remain places where assembly of decent products creates quality items. These watches will remain niche given their limited production. It doesn't matter that, other than among enthusiasts, the CW brand doesn't have the same caché as the well-known (and mostly) Swiss brands. Most people cannot buy certain brands that have priced themselves on the grey market way beyond anything remotely affordable. There are now two markets. On the one hand, the rarified silliness of a few big name brands bought by seriously wealthy collectors and/or worn by big-name promoters, and occasionaly bought by people placing investment value above horological desire. And on the other hand, a world of premier brands, independents and microbrands where retail prices are usually the price paid (with some discounting sometimes) and flippers do not corrupt the market place. If CW keep making innovative and quality watches at "reasonable" prices, then they will continue to get support from watch lovers and especially from me.

Amazing. Shame it's sold out. Hope they make a lot more. You are right about the prices of watches becoming stupid over the years. Even once affordable brands like seiko and grand seiko are going up into the next price brackets so it's nice to find some that are making things that should cost a lot more but are keeping the pricing respectable. I recently got a vintage seiko Bellmatic and it's a nice watch that shows that brands used to make such things at an affordable price range for something with a bell mechanism inside it.

In 1996, I bought a Panerai, the first year they were released in their new form. I made my friend purchase a Cartier Roadster in 1997, the first year that was released. I haven't really had 'that feeling' about a watch in a long time. I'd rather prepare for retirement than walk around with a hyper watch. But this watch sings to me. I tip my hat to the team at Ward for making something truly great. I put my deposit down for a purple one today. I will happily await her arrival.

That is just an awesomely beautiful watch. Hour chime is a genuinely useful thing to have, like the bleeps on a Casio.

Clap-clap-clap-clap-clap...!!! A masterpiece indeed! In. Every. Single. Aspect. The poetry of praises in this video is well deserved. Bravo Cristofer Ward for giving us the Bel Canto! And thank you Andrew for this wonderful review.
