This series has been great so far! I am curious how you decide what to cover since you aren't really following a continuous historical line. What I mean is, although you are mostly following a chronological order, you are jumping between various sections of the history that don't lead directly from one to the other. Regardless you do a great job giving a good overview of the history with the examples you use. Are you picking topics with the most archeological evidence that can be discussed? Or just specific points in the history that you feel are the most relevant? Something else?

A great reference to Herod A score of names, perhaps, in the whole range of history, have been accounted, and called great. But who are they? How poor are all the results they left on earth compared with his who repressed the ignoble strife of his followers, who should be greatest. Some good men have attained the title, an Alfred, a Peter, a Charlemagne; but most have been great in crime and blood; an Alexander, a Pompey, a Ceasar, a Herod, a Louis, a Henry, a Frederic, a Charles, a Bonaparte and now we can add most to our national shame, a Houston, a Bartow, and a Swarthout. They were great in many things ; great, perhaps, in ability, great in resolution of will, great in means of influence, and striking in their results; but little in the elements of a truty great character ; little in honesty, in truth, in love, mean, selfish, crafty, cruel, and implacable. They have been willing to sacrifice any amount of human life or happiness, to secure their end, and be accounted the greatest. But how poor the honor, how blood-stained the glory! How many death-pangs it has taken to refine their thrill of pleasure, how many tears to water their garlands of victory, how much human gore to dye their purple robes of royalty ! -war with Mexico reviewed, Abiel Livermore 1850

That the Bible is not exactly most accurate with dates?..
@varana3 жыл бұрын
While that is often true, in this case it's not the Bible's fault. The Bible obviously never says "Jesus was born in 1 AD". This discrepancy between Herod dying in 4 BCE and Jesus' birth being dated to 4 years later, is the fault of the guy who etsablished that date, a monk named Dionysius Exiguus who lived in the 6th century CE. He just made a computational error and got the year of Jesus' birth wrong. But his count of the years became customary, and so we've ended up with Jesus technically being born before "Jesus' birth".

Most say that it is legendary, since the Gospel of Matthew is the only place that recalls the event. Others say that the Massacre of the Innocents was not out of character for Herod the Great, and not the greatest of his crimes. Also, the small size of Bethlehem at the time means that the number of deaths involved (between 6 and 20 depending on the authors) was not that great, so it was not recorded by historians.

No, Herod the Great had a census conducted for all the people of Judea. The census included, the people of Judea paying a tax to (King Herod). H. -The time period of when the census existed is an estimation of when ‘Jesus of Nazareth’ was born. -Listen more closely to the beginning of the video about (the story of the magi asking King Herod where the king of the Jews was born).
