As someone who believed in alignments and the ability to give the gm the shorthand idea of the character and or monster, this discussion completely changed my view. I think the closest i've seen that is similar to this is the Hackmaster system that has you roll the background info that gives players an idea of what they represent. Great discussion!

i am a bit confused about the difference being drawn here between ethical and moral E&A. a more ind depth discussion would be very interesting!!

We shall put it on the list! We definitely need more time to play with and wrestle these ideas in real games.

50:57 "Those guys in Beaverton are assholes" "and that's true" So we're fighting whenever we meet up is what I'm hearing.

It's me, hi, I'm the asshole. It's me.

Hahaha, we both live in Beaverton.

Alignment hasn't mattered since 3rd edition. Unless you're a rules lawyer who follows the rulebooks to the letter, alignment is just the equivalent of those background flaw/bond boxes in 5e. They're just for RP

Except of course for the classes that explicitly required you to have a similar alignment to their god. And that's kind of our point, edicts in an asthma is are much more precise and easily communicated system of values then alignment.

I thought Spirit damage was a great way to handle alignment damage.

Yeah the jury is still out until we get to see the rest of the books 🤷♂️

The attack on alignment stems from either feeling judged by it or not understanding it.

We’re flattered that you made it through our 90 minute discussion in its entirety to be able to form such a nuanced conclusion.

@@goblinsalvagerites Absolutely correct response. The OC should read " Defending the alignment system is based only on nostalgia and a misunderstanding of what its original purpose was. It was made for a game where dying multiple times a session was normal and playing a character needed a crutch for leaning against so players didn't get fatigued thinking up multiple deep characters every week."

As someone from Hillsboro, what would say to me? ;)

The Hillsboro Church of asmodius would likely be a lot more chill than you'd expect. Not as much of a stickler as the other parts in Portland. They regularly sacrifice kittens though, that's a little...odd 😬
