I played this religiously when it was released in 1991. I remember when i beat the game in the arcade with my brother watching me play it to the end and to my surprise , i turned around and there was a crowd watching me play it. That's a moment I'll never forget.

I remember when laser disc games enjoyed their brief resurgence during the FMV Era. I tried DL2 once and didn't understand what I was supposed to do, or if the game was even working. Same with Time Traveler. I don't really remember anyone playing those games or mad dog mcgree. They all cost $1 and only lasted a few seconds, it seems.

Another easter egg of the pirate ship level that was never completed, is at the end of the game 16:16 , when Dirk dumps out all the hidden treasures for the kids he collected throughout the game. If you look at the bottom, you can see a pirate ship flag(skull & crossbones), that he never actually collected in the game. Me and my friends had heard about that missing pirate level pretty early on, and that was always confirmation that it was planned, but never finished/included in the final game. The story goes they wanted it to be a musical type level with singing and dancing, and I guess in the end, the budget just didn't allow, but that would have been way cool.

You were like the guy I seen at Jilly's Arcade in Ocean City playing Mortal Kombat 2 and demolishing the CPU and challengers alike. The Don Bluth laser disk games are so evocative of the 80s arcades and successive generations of consoles and home computers, I currently own the the Wii Dragon's Lair Trilogy and the PS4 Dragon's Lair Trilogy, a friend had the Amiga version once upon a time, agonising to play off floppy disc with no HD install and only one drive.

That Jim from Taxi is a brilliant reference. I vividly remember standing in line when on holiday to play Dragons Layer as a kid in the early eighties when it was still shiny and new. I remember my dad nearly choking at how much it was to play and saying I had to make my "credit last". I think we all know how that panned out! The next time I saw a Dragons Layer cabinet it was distinctly devoid of any players. They were the days! Thanks for the great content and your brilliant and funny commentary - it makes the videos!

There was a gas station in my town that had a small arcade in back. I used to walk there all the time to play. They actually kept really new and up to date games in it, too. DL2 came in there around mid 1992. I remember once there was this mother with her kid in there. Someone else was playing and got to the Garden of Eden scene with the BIG woman and the little naked cherubs. She damn near went apoplectic. Covered her kid's eyes and pulled him out of the room, and you could hear her nearly screaming at the poor cashier. I thought it was hilarious at the time (my undeveloped little high school era brain you know), but now realize that it was an early appearance of what we now know as Karen.

IMO the most hilarious line in all of the Dragon's Lair Trilogy games is "do it for the children." I also wondered how Daphne kept such a hot body after popping out 10 kids. I originally chalked it up to video game physics and video game logic, but I like the Pilates explanation better. I own this on Blu-Ray and that is the version I beat and I only beat it that one time because I have forgotten all the moves since then. I do have this on Steam, Android, Wii, PS4, and I do have the Arcade 1Up cabinet. I need to sit down and re-learn this game so I can beat it again, but it's on my game backlog and we all know what happens in the "video games backlog", LOL.

Man this game is still so beautiful! I never played this game myself (only the first one back in arcades) but one time at my local arcade the owner played through the game for a big crowd making just a few mistakes. My favorite death scene is where Dirk gets nom'd by the cat, still gets me every time.

I have DL2 in my home arcade, was looking for one for YEARS! Finally came across one & HAD to snag it! Its absolutely beautiful! So difficult, I doubt I'll ever be able to beat it! It runs on Dexter now, but I still have the LD & player on a shelf.

I remember playing DL1 when it first came out and how popular it was. It was the first 50 cents arcade game I believe. I only saw DL2 once in the arcade, but it was during the Street Fighter 2 craze, so no one was playing it.

OMG, thanks for the DL2 love, as well as Laser Disc games in general, as I've been a fan since the start, and always appreciate bringing attention to this medium. I was lucky enough to play this at one of it's test locations in California, and with two of my friends became good enough to finish it on one man, and collect all the treasures. It's probably my greatest arcade gaming achievement hands down, as it took a few weeks of regular visits, but in the end, I love every minute of it.

Ah, this one is my jam. Played the hell outta this in the arcade, and would beat it regularly just to brag. It was a cool feeling to have crowds of people gather around u and root u on. I hated, hated, HATED the Egypt level. It was so easy to forget your moves when u are tangled in the mummy’s bandages, and I would always forget which direction to jump off the giant flying bat.

I remember the first time I saw Dragon's Lair for the first time in the summer of 1984,it was not only the first time for me being at Disney world but my first trip to Florida in general,we stayed at this hotel in Kissimmee called Larson's Lodge where the lobby was separate from the hotel building,about 200 yards apart to be exact. The lobby had a Shoney's restaurant (if anyone remembers those) ,a small gift shop that sold Disney trinket toys and souvenirs cheap and a video arcade area surrounded by coin op video game cabinets and pinball machines and in the center a pool table. To cut to the chase,there it was in all it's Don Bluth created by glory Dragon's Lair. Hey such a great bowl of pure awesomeness it was and the demo screen I could watch all day long,I even watched the cartoon on Saturday morning along with Pac Man,Donkey Kong and all that Saturday morning greatness.

I remember back in the mid to late 80s, there was a Saturday morning show on CBS, like a live kids variety show with mostly dancing, but during commercials, they showed half of the Alice in Wonderland stage, which was the first time i'd ever seen ANY footage of DL2, which I never knew existed. I waited until the next week and recorded it, which was the last time it played, so me being the 13 year old Dragon's Lair fan I was, simulated playing the stage over and over. I found the show, but I can't find any recordings of it. All I know is, when it ended, the next thing that played was the ending of a Dallas episode, where Bobby Ewing gets hit by a car and "dies" in the cliffhanger

I owned a copy of this in the form of a trilogy on the PC-CDROM back in the mid to late 90's. It was for Windows and it was a small window based video unless you wanted to run it in full screen, but the collection had Dragon's Lair I, Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp, and Space Ace. It was called the Dragon's Lair Deluxe Pack and came on 2 CD-ROMs. It came out in 1998.

Did not know about this game at all until the Trilogy came out 4 the Wii U. Got it for my son. I never did get to play it, but I still have the game. Unfortunately my son is clumsy & dropped it 2 many times, so I may have 2 invest in re-buying a Wii U. I wonder if Time Warp has a watch mode on the DVD? Maybe I'll invest in that as well. This game is fun to play & fun 2 watch! I will always be a fan of Dragons Lair! I really only played the original game in the Arcades once Space Ace came out then the original Dragons Lair cabinet was open 4 whoever when I was a kid.

I'm pretty sure in our local arcade I was the second person to beat DLII, I missed out on the top spot by a couple of days to some other guy! It was pretty difficult compared to DL, a LOT more moves to remember! It was a trip to play too!

Hi Patrick. The part that you mentioned about the Nintendo copyright I actually posted up in Mame forums quite a while back. I noticed it on my dragons lair DVD 25th anniversary collection. We came to a conclusion that the version that is presented is possibly the CDI version and that Nintendo might have been involved for that specific version. But it's only speculation. I found it odd that it was on the DVD version. I played the original arcade version back in the day and that Nintendo copyright did not exist back in the early nineties. At least on the version that I played. So yeah it's very strange.

DL1, DL2, Space Ace and Mad Dog McGree stole a *ton of quarters* in the mid 80's for me as well. When I first played DL2 at my local arcade it was $1.00 go figure. I guess that arcade owner was taking advantage of his costumer's but I did not realize that at the time in my life, I was just happy to play it. 😂🕹 and BTW who did not have a major crush on Daphne, (I did, sorry Dirk).

I didn't see you mention it, or see any video of it, but a lot of people don't know there are TWO versions of the Mordroc fight. I played arcade version when it was new, and the CD-i version, from when I worked at Blockbuster Games test store back in 94/95. In the arcade, if you don't get the treasures, they make you go back and get them, but in the CD-i version, if you don't get them, you fight Mordroc, but Daphne never turns into a monster. It still ends the same, but Daphne is already sleeping.

Don Bluth was planning an animated Dragon's Lair movie in 2015 or so, but wasn't able to get the budget for cel-animation, but it was picked up by Netflix for live-action, still pending... Before that, I wanted the Adam-Colecovision version but it never hit my stores.

This was such an oddity when it was released so late comparatively as a sequel. The first one made thousands of dollars for my local arcade every week. By the time Time Warp came out, the buzz was a little muted. Still a gorgeous game and more fun to watch than to play IMO but definitely an improvement.

I also never saw Space Ace in the flesh. The original hit our arcade 1983 or 1984, but always people lining up. I never got the chance to play it. And one day it was gone.

Remember biking to the nearest town, just to see it, back at the day. Gladly it was only something like 3km, but it was worth it. As a game, didn't like it, even back then. It was just a marvel of excellent sound and cartoon. Someone should really make a whole new game, based on the story of first Dragon's Lair... The earlier 3D-version isn't totally terrible, but it would be fantastic to see an AAA-status game of that, made in modern technology...

I read an interview with Don Bluth about this game's wackiness. Why did they have so many random effects going on? He said the animators had more freedom when animating this game, so there were more whimsical ideas put in.

One of my favorite things about this game is the expressions on Dirk, especially during death scenes. Many of them seem to be looking right at the player like "You idiot." lol Also, I'd like to suggest a history of Section Z, a game that actually seemed more fun on the NES than in the arcade. Karnov would be another good one, since it had a pretty decent port, although the ending is better in the arcade version.

Dragon's Lair Time Warp was a truncated version of the original project. Especially for the original soundtrack that was written by Chris Stone. It's still audible in one extra clip from Dragon's Lair II DVD-PC called History. In the final product they remade totally the soundtracks with a sinthetizer and the result ehm... is far from the original. Hope someday we will be able to find and restore also the real tracks.

Huge fan of the Dragon's Lair Trilogy - I even have a replica of the original Dragon's Lair arcade game & cabinet. Played & beat Dragon's Lair II : Time Warp & Time Traveller in the arcades, back in the day. Amazing animation - surpassing the 1st 2 games! Always wsh they had made MORE of these games, w/more interactivity - perhaps a 2 player option where you played as either Dirk or Ace! Dragon's Lair 3D was OK - but could've been so much better, imo. If you look at some of the modern cel-shaded next-gen games, like 'Hi-Fi Rush' & 'Guilty Gear', you can really see how they have the technology to make great traditional-looking cartoon graphics which would allow full on interaction & visuals that would be perfect for these designs. Imagine a 'Devil May Cry' style game, but which looked like Dragon's Lair, w/cel-shaded graphics! Finally, you couod have traditional animation-style visuals, w/real-time controls. It's the next stage of evolution of Dragon's Lair or Space Ace. Bluth & Goldman - please, make this happen!

I have the CD Deluxe version that came out before the DVD. It has Dragon's Lair I, II, and Space Ace. It's a 2 CD-Rom compatible with DOS and Windows 3.11. Sadly, it doesn't run on modern systems complaining of a missing codec which I can't seem to find.

I never understood why the title is "TIMEWARP," instead it should have been something like "DIMENSIONSWARP" or "FAIRYTALESWARP," because where is the time here? Anyway, as always, a very useful video! I wonder what will happen to the "Dragon's Lair Movie," for which I personally financed the trailer.... Don Bluth is no longer talking about it, the last news was years ago showing that he was discussing a live action or animated version mixed (!!) with Netflix and Ryan Reynolds as Dirk. However, I guess I should be happy with what I got from that crowfunding: an autographed copy from Don Bluth and Gary Goldman of all three bluray versions of the games ("Dragon's Lair," "Space Ace," and "Dragon's Lair II"). 🙂
