Patrick Troughton interviewed on Pebble Mill at One by the lovely Marian Foster, transmitted 21st December 1973. I think it's fair to assume that hospitality were a tad more generous than usual with the Blue Nun. Judging by the standard of camerawork I think the crew probably indulged too. The cameras here would be EMI 2001s.
Sadly, Patrick is no longer with us. A few years on - Marian is still just as lovely!

RIP Patrick Troughton. He was the first Doctor I remember. A great guy. Shame on the BBC for erasing half of the Who`s with him. Shitehawks.. He seemed ill at ease.

It is a shame he is no longer with us. It is also sad that so many of his Dr Who episodes - more than half, in fact - are lost, seemingly forever...

It's not the same as having the actual footage, but at least we did get many of his stories animated.

Troughton would have lived longer if he just didn’t go over board with his life as he would get that 2nd and fatal heart attack. Not counting the animations. With three(one episode stolen after recovery)of his stories recovered after the junking and theft. His archive is sort of growing again. Let’s hope more is recovered.

My favourite doctor. I never grew up watching Doctor Who, even in the present day. I’m early 30’s, so had ample time to get into it. I took the plunge, and went back and started with Hartnell. I enjoyed him, sort of an old, genius, slightly abrupt yet gentle underneath it, sort of space wizard character. But Patrick Troughton. What an actor. What he did for the Doctor, wow. It was his incarnation that made fall in love with the whole series. I’m now onto Pertwee, who I am enjoying very much. But I do miss the Second Doctor terribly. “the cosmic hobo”.

Some of my favorite scenes with Patrick Troughton as the doctor are all the episodes where he crossed over with another doctor. These scenes were well written and comical but serious.

What I think is a shame is how much more interesting and intriguing actors can be when not playing roles. I've also had a soft spot for Marian Foster! my feeling is that Patrick didn't mind the awkwardness! - welcomed it even!

I think he'd enjoyed some BBC hospitality - perhaps more than enough for a winter lunch! He was a great actor though, and quite a personality. Patrick was so honest and 'up front' and almost impossible to upstage. Its hard to judge who was in overall control of this interview (though I think Marian did a great job under the circumstances!).

Yes - a good point made ! Patrick did refer to 'Billy' (Hartnell). This was transmitted in the era of 'Dr Who mk 3' (aka - John Pertwee). All good fun though! There's certainly some seriously messy camerawork; not to mention untidy cables appearing in shot.

He was enormous in the role that arguably still makes him, but it's clear even here he really doesn't want to be special outside of his own mind. It's his work and I think he would rather it was seen as that.

Pat's another one of those who enjoyed his own private, personal existence behind the masks of the different roles that he could play. His real persona mostly tended to shy away from this sort of exposure and you can really feel his discomfort.

Very insightful observation & I shrewdly suspect some actors are perfectly comfortable playing a dramatic role but ironically either private or shy of portraying their true characters in public...

@@darania1 Peter Sellers was another such actor, famously almost calling off an interview with Michael Parkinson just before going on. The interview took place with Peter introducing himself with a little act in WW2 German uniform, then doing a little 'strip tease' before revealing the real casually dressed Peter. I believe that interview is still on KZbin.

I've just finished watching the reconstruction of Fury from the deep 2day & it doesn't dissapoint! So erie & creepy, & everyone is giving Patrick a run for his money in terms of performance! But Pat wins in the end tho of course! If you haven't watched it, give me a message & i'll give you a link! But you better turn the light on! Scarey!!!!

it's nice to look back on. I think he has the 'upper hand' against the young Marian but he's very polite with it. It does look a bit like cameraman training school (and it was live to air). Now't like like being thrown in the deep end, as they say!

Late reply, but, to be fair to the interviewer, it was a bit more difficult to do your research back then. There wasn't any way to search up his filmography on Wikipedia or IMDb, so she was likely referring to something she was told, or maybe her own experience watching Troughton's performances.

Patrick was a very accompished actor - arguably better in some respects than Jon Pertwee? I'm not sure that Patrick liked being associated with the Dr Who character?! Jon Pertwee was of course very well known as a comedy actor and voice artist before he was cast as Dr Who. Jon & Katy were truly superb together (thanks Barry) and I don't think that they will ever be bettered. I did not know William Hartnell at all, though it seems he could be difficult to work with!

Ampex196 from what was said I think he liked it by the 80s and late 70s because he actually asked to come back for the 2 Doctors and it was being planned since before the 5 doctors. Wendy Padbury did an interview where she suggested that he didn't like conventions and liked to keep himself to himself but he called up one day and said how he decided to go to a convention and enjoyed it. He went to loads in the 80s and I get the sense that he treat TV appearances as chances to play the character again

@LegoDaleks Ok, first of all, you could've just said that Matt Smit wasn't like Patrick. But instead you had to go on a rant about how Matt Smith acts like he's 5 and is constantly acting like an idiot, and how he's not as pretty as Patrick. Patrick is amazing, but you don't have to criticize Matt just to prove your point.

So Patrick's doctor was going to black up. All I'm thinking is "Wow. If a modern Doctor suggested this they would be crucified regardless of how they meant it." Just shows how times are different, I suppose. (He says being born in 1990). I'm sure he was probably joking, but WOW. xD

+RassilonTDavros He actually did want to black up at first. Troughton thought that replacing Hartnell was a bad idea, and in the event that Doctor Two failed as badly as he predicted, he wanted to look sufficiently different enough to avoid it killing his career.
