Hi, I really liked your video. I shoot with the m10 and the 35mm f1.4 Summilux and the camera is so much fun. I watched your video twice, I liked it so much. The simplicity of the m10 and the Leica glass with the image rendering is the best. I liked the way you took those low to ground photos with the reflections in the water. Did you focus peak focus in the cathedral? I hope to add the visoflex in the future. The camera comparisons was excellent to. Thank you.
@PatrickColpron Жыл бұрын
Thank you Richard, means a lot. The M with a 35 is a perfect match. I did not focus peak when I make photos close to the ground for reflection I pre-focus using the rangefinder and also pre-set my exposure, in this case the focus was easy, simply set to infinity. A spirit hot show level, or bubble level help a lot in getting the shot level, which is best got puddle reflection. I have a few Visoflex, but so seldom use them, I'd avoid getting one. Unless you make a lot of photos at night where I find it useful to set your exposure, these days I just use live view when I beed to yet do so very seldom. The M10 remains the best digital M for how I shoot and still use them to this day

Wonderful, enjoyable video. I love it. It was a Leica lens that sold me on the Leica M system, too, a pre-owned Summilux-M 50mm ASPH, at a nearby Leica dealer. Nikon and Canon had no 50mm lens to compete with THAT look. I tested the Summilux on a pre-owned M9, and a pre-owned M Type 240, then decided to buy the lens, before I knew which body I could afford. I crunched the numbers, and bought a new M10, with the Summilux, as a retirement gift, for myself. That was in April 2018. Zero regrets.

Fantastic Vlog and your First! Leica M, well addictive, once you use one there is nothing else. in the 90's, I borrowed one for an assignment and had to get one, My first was a M4-P with a 50mm Summicron. I own a few now but by far the M10-P is my favorite. Like all my previous Leica's, it is the one that is always with me as it should. :)

Hi Gregory, thank you for your comment, the M10-P is fantastic, the M10 line up is the best digital M for me, not even looking at the M11, I also love the MP for film

I’m thinking of getting a film MP. I’m hesitant due to the fact the prints from the M10P are stellar, especially on Canson Infinity Platine photo rag.

@@gregoryvarano8002 Hi Greg, my Leica kit has evolved since I made this video, I now have all five M10 models and two Leica MP, I have been mostly using the Leica MPs for the last few months. I truly love the experience of shooting film, being way way more choosy as to what I shoot and my compositions. It is a more satisfying approach to photography for me. I waited 15 years before purchasing my first Leica MP, I bought my second Leica MP a couple of weeks later. I say go for it - just shop around first to know the price of film stock in your area and also compare labs where you can get your fill processed, printed from the negative and HD scans made. Once you factor that cost in - you will have a better idea of what you are getting into cost wise. In my opinion, it is well worth it.

@@PatrickColpron ok I broke down and purchased a mint second hand Leica m4-2 with a 50mm F2 Summicron v3. Both have been CLA'd and in top condition. There is something truly special using a Film M camera, the feel the sound or lack of due to the fantastic the shutter ( of course the M10p is quieter but also electronic not mechanical as is the M7). An excellent and enjoyable vlog thanks for sharing your thoughts on the M10 variants. I don't own a Leica but hope to at some point, I couldn't agree more about the size of some mirrorless lenses, the idea of having and using a mirrorless system was for me getting a reduction in size and weight yet the opposite is happening as size and weight of the lenses just grows and grows, all the benefits of a smaller system lost. With a Leica system out of my budget at present my aim is to get a Nikon/Leica M adapter and start using some M mount glass on my Nikon Z7, this will give me a camera/lens combination that is nicely compact and discreet, yet more than capable of delivering some top quality results. Looking forward to more vlogs from you.
@PatrickColpron5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, greatly appreciated - yes the size and weight of the lenses keep growing and that is odd with some mirrorless system. There are alternatives and some lenses are smaller - but when desiring faster apertures and pro-zoom with constant apertures at 2.8 the lenses, are not smaller than their DSLR equivalent in a lot of cases. Sony does offer great F/4 zoom lenses - yet - I prefer fast, small primes, Leica was the only logical choice for me :)

@PatrickColpron5 жыл бұрын
Hi Martin, thank you greatly appreciated. Cameras are very personal choices. I know a couple of people (3) who purchased the Q a few years back, it is all they use. It is better to have the best camera you can afford now, instead of waiting until you can afford a more expensive camera. The Q2 is, having tried it briefly, very light and responsive. It is a camera you'll always have with you. It is so light. I personally prefer the M with interchangeable lenses, and you are right - only one life.. Keep in mind my M cameras are a business expense, I can write them off, and because they are a business expense I save on the 20% sales tax too.
@martincowell5725 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree Patrick. Realistically the Q2 is the most I can afford right now and it's more than a match for my photographic abilities - I can't wait to start using it. I've been an admirer or Leica for 20 years or more but apart from having a D-Lux for a while (not really a Leica) I've been using Canon, Nikon and most recently the Fuji X-Pro. This is my first proper foray into Leica territory. Who knows, perhaps in a few years time I be able to get myself an M with a couple of lenses but in the meantime I'm just going to shoot the hell out of the Q2. By the way I like the look of the straps you use. Are they by Artisan & Artist please? The other thing is the spirit bubble in the hot shoe. That's a great idea and I can really see the benefit of it. What make was that please? You've got to keep the vlogs going - I will definitely be looking out for them as I love your style. It's also great to see some lovely shots of Paris again - especially Place de Vosges. It must be 15 years or so since I've been there but you've inspired me to go back. Have a great weekend and keep up the excellent work.

14:03 This is exactly what I discovered instantly when I picked up the M10-D at a leica store, I had 2weeks earlier bought a silver M10-P, my first ever M and I had no idea leica would release an M10-D, I wanted that so much. Yes it feels more natural in the hands, you don't have that directional button on the side so the extra leather covering aids to grip the body even more.
@PatrickColpron5 жыл бұрын
The M10-D does feel much better in hand, for me it is the perfect digital M. When I purchased the first of my M10s - I considered the MD for a week before making my final decision. I really prefer the M without the display back. This said - I love the look of the M10 with the red dot and the snappiest of the shutter sound.
@ronitsingh855 жыл бұрын
Thanks Patrick, When Leica released their first M-D, they had opened my eyes to something far more beautiful than any other camera out there, a digital M with no rear screen is a complete camera in all aspects for sure, whatever that is missing is taken care by the app. I like that, Sooner or later I am buying the M-D, I was told by Leica that in the future they will release a silver version of the M-D upon my request to them to have the rear dials in silver, so will see what happens there. I plan to keep the M10-P that I have. For me I like the Leica script on the top plate, it feels right, but everyone has different taste that's what makes us all special! Indeed I can see the black and the red leica dot look nice and the contrast is eye catching. BTW Love the French accent
@PatrickColpron5 жыл бұрын
@@ronitsingh85 Thank you Ronit, a Leica M10-D in silver now that is the bomb, I will definitively buy an M10-D as well. The one in the video was on loan by Leica. Absolutely feels right in my hands - more so than any other camera. I will keep the M10 and M10-P since I'd lose so much on them as a trade in or in an online sale, makes no sense to part with them now. I tried quickly the Q2 - now I am looking forward to more megapixels in M cameras in the future too. Now a Silver M10-D Monochrome with a mechanical shutter would be the best M digital ever. That I can dream about for a long time, I really love what Leica has done with the M10, finally a digital M I can use for work - and I use my two M10 a lot.
@ronitsingh855 жыл бұрын
@@PatrickColpronsorry for the late reply, one gets busy. Yes indeed, a silver M10-D is certainly on my watch list or just the rear dial in silver is all i need to be content. does not get any better than that, the perfect M digital body. its like a classic car with all the modern mechanics underneath. great performance with that classic look and function. Although I love the M with interchangeable lens capability, I don't like taking the lens on and off if I can help it. With 2 Ms, you have the option to mount your 2 fav lenses on and bamn you are good to go! of course its a lot more heavy than 2 lens and one body, BUT you will eliminate the need to be changing lens on the go, eliminate possible dust going in, wear on mount and God forbid, lens slipping and falling! I have always thought it is a good idea to have 2 cameras on you at least. Plus you will not waste time in capturing that decisive moment if you have 2 dedicated bodies with their respective lenses. So there is my reason to keep my M10-P when I do get the M10-D in the future, plus as you say resale value, one will loose quite a bit for sure even if its $1000-$1500, that's a lot of mula! I'd rather keep it and use it. recently I bought the summaron 35mm f3.5 lens, the older version, 1958 one, now I am thinking of getting the elmar 35mm as well! very beautiful lens and sharp as well, so small and so dense, it is all brass and heavy for its size. Its good to own such lenses in ones lifetime. something like that can go on your M and never come off, very convenient for street or landscape. I find 28mm to be too wide for my taste.
@PatrickColpron5 жыл бұрын
@@ronitsingh85 No worries about the late reply, this is the reason I have two M10. I don't want to change lenses, faster and easier to go from one camera to another. I will end up with four M10 and 5 lenses. I can carry 3 M10 with lenses attached without breaking a sweat in my camera bag.

Thank you, means a lot. With a 50mm to complement it and tell the whole story, I would recommend a 28mm, since you already have a super fast lens, 28 Summicron would be perfect, same size as the 35 Summilux. The 35 Summilux is super sharp. Totally worth it, yet often I wish it provided me more, this is why I recommend the 28 for the whole story.

Patrick. Thank you for this video. One of the best M10 ones out there. I moved to a M10 about a month ago and sold all my (heavy) Canon gear. I was really, really worried about the move but I haven't regretted it one bit. I bought a second hand M10 and a single second hand 35mm f2. I couldn't afford the new prices (or the second hand really!) but it's been brilliant, liberating even. I'm just a (serious?) amateur and I know they are very expensive but if you can afford it.... wow.... I've just come back from Cannes and then Jordan and the images are epic. Very little post processing required - pretty much straight of of the file (maybe lift the shadows a bit if you've exposed for the highlights). I was worried about going back to a manual focus camera - I shouldn't have been - it just works. I've never left a KZbin review ever before and it may be my last.... so thanks again... if this was your first vlog I look forward to more.

Hi Tom, Thank you so much for the review, greatly appreciated. You are correct - there is very little post process required and it is so easy to bring back details from the shadows when needed. The dynamic range of the files is great, the colour rendition is perfect. When I had an M6 and an M9 - I used the 35/2 incredibly sharp and small, absolutely loved that 35 Summicron, a great way - and a wise decision on your part was buying second hand. Most Leica shooters take absolute good care of their Leica cameras and lenses. They are a true pleasure to shoot with because they are not cumbersome and a Leica M kit remains lighter than a DSLR kit for sure.

Your pictures are imaginative and esthetically pleasant, not to mention that they are technically perfect. I wish there were more reviews as informative and relaxing to watch as yours. This is an excellent video, with some really useful comments / opinions about the M10 series. I’ve used Leica film cameras for decades, and heavily invested in bodies / lenses. I’ve also used Nikon film SLRs extensively as well as DSLR, and agree about the size issues, so I keep coming back to Leica. I have an M9 which I use a lot, but will be getting an M10 so this video was exceptionally useful - very many thanks for sharing!

Loved your review, currently a Sony A7rii shooter, and mainly a landscape photographer, how do you rate the M10 cameras for Landscape, my main lense is the 24 105 f4 and most of my work Battis 18 if I want to go wider, and 100 400 Gmaster for wild life and some panoramas. I have always wanted a Leica Tempted with the Q2 and keeping the sony for the long and wide ends, but a M10 with say 28 and 50 would be the dream, My question is do you rate the M10 as a landscape camera compared to Sony.? would love your thoughts. NZ and Australian landscape are my main areas of photography.
@patrickcolpron37215 жыл бұрын
Thank you Lindsay for landscape photography and overall versatility the Sony is hard to beat. For sharpness and color rendition the M10 and Leica M lenses are leaders - yet the A7Rii is 42 megapixels vs 24 for the Leica M10... they are very different cameras. If and when you come to Paris - I'll let you use my M10 for you to see the files for yourself. I use the cameras for work and I don't do landscape. And for landscape the Leica 21mm lenses are truly hard to beat on the wide end of the spectrum.

The M are the only Leica cameras I am interested in by Leica and the M10 is the best digital M ever made. I know of a couple of people using the M10 only for their work. I do need video for a living as such only the M10 - is impossible for me, but one day I'll get other people to do videos for me. I'll just carry one M10 with me. And that will be it.

M9 is the best Body to start into Leica. And except of the Zeiss you can easy sell the m9 and the Summilux and get your money back if you don’t like Leica and rangefinders
@bwest62755 жыл бұрын
I dont recommend buying anything but Leica made lenses. If you are going to spend the money on an a M10, why short change the most important part - the lens. I know people argue about this. They can shoot whatever they like. To me though, it’s just doesn’t make sense to do so unless it’s all about economics and saving money. The heart and soul of Leica is in the glass. That’s where the photo begins.
@patrickcolpron37215 жыл бұрын
Hi Marius, 2 lenses, I would got with a 50 summilux and 28 Summicron, Leica lenses have great color rendition. Money is no object then the 50 Summicron APO and the 21 Summilux

Great review Patrick. Doing it on location is what makes it better than the majority of reviews on the tube. Have you used the Monochrome 246? I am thinking of tossing some of my Canon gear to get my first M and the reviews of the Monochrome indicate it is sharper than the colour versions and for a person who is colour blind maybe a simpler and safer option. I have a Fuji XT-2 if I feel the need to take colour pics.
@PatrickColpron5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Phillip, greatly appreciated. I never tried the Monochrome. The person to ask is Jon Nicholson www.jonnicholson.co.uk who does most of his work with the Monochrome. I am really looking forward to an M10 Monochrome

@@shy-guy5544 Thank you, and that's great for the folks shooting with Fuji cameras !
@guidon.5413Күн бұрын
Fuji cameras have basically falls colors out of camera and are much harder to post-process nicely than Nikon Z files. I switched from Fuji to Nikon partly because it cut my editing time in half AND I got better results. The whole thing with Fuji camera JPEGs are that if you like them, good for you. If you don't like them, it's a pain compared to other raw formats. Even with years of creating my own presets, the Fujis never got predictable results.

I thought the M is small and the lens is small and weightless too, why some M shooter say it’s heavy and moved to CL or other APSC camera?
@patrickcolpron37215 жыл бұрын
The M camera are not light, some lenses - even small lenses - can be heavy. The Leica M10 and the Silver Summilux 50 is 50 grams less than a Nikon D850 and Nikkor 50/1.4 lens. They are not light - yet so much more compact and very capable cameras

I didn't say no post process, but very little post process required compared to Nikon or Canon cameras. I usually just click on "Auto" using Adobe Bridge and I am done with the M10-R whereas with the M10, M10P & M10D I have to bring the temperature down a bit for my taste. The M10 has richer, warmer and more vibrant colors than the M10-R

This review was nice one of the better reviews I'v seen in the past year. But Would have. gone in more detail on the MD10. such as it appears to be totally dependent on wifi to work the menu. such as formatting and thinks of the that sort. I'd get the camera but for the wifi dependency
@PatrickColpron2 жыл бұрын
Not a bad idea, thank you for the feedback, glad you liked the review. You are right should have gone more into it, this said - once I set the menu the way I wanted it - I never touched it again except for the only issue I have with it, if ever I use wifi to use my camera as a view finder for one photo, in remote mode - the camera resets the drive mode to single when I had ti set to continuous High Speed, I have to reset that one every tine to continuous high speed.

You highlight one of the main reasons Leica M10 camera's interest me. They are the only modern digital FF cameras that due to the lens sizes combined with the body size and shape are actually truly compact enough. good looking enough, and blend in enough to be a take everywhere camera. I love my D800 but it's not really a camera that can integrate into your daily life like a Leica M can. Even something like an A7 is bigger and more obtrusive, even if you put adapted M lenses on it. Not to mention the EVF which for me is an automatic no buy and the fact that they are way more fragile. Plus the M is just fun and unique camera to use. It's a real photographers camera. The lines, the shape, the durability, the feel in your hand, the Leica is a work of art in itself. Which makes it a joy to use and something you can really appreciate for a visual artist like a photographer. It puts you in a totally different and more artistic mindset than using the latest neato gadget camera that does a lot of fancy things but is just a utilitarian tool with no soul. That they managed to keep the soul and feel of the M cameras in the digital transition is just amazing engineering that I really appreciate a lot.

Thanks for your review of the Leica M system Patrick! I am a new millennium shooter having only ever shot digital starting photography only in 2003. I started with Nikon, Canon DSLR’s which I did some paid weddings and then to Leica M8, then back Canon, to Fuji, Sony A7 series and then the Leica MP240 in 2017, adding a T (701). i see in the Leica M sensors a 3D pop and sharpness i cannot describe. Even the M is sharper than T. The T showed the same sharpness though when i used the huge 24-90SL with a non-existent AF on the T. There is probably some truth in using native lenses: M lenses for M rangefinder sensor.
