I stumbled onto your excellent video just now. This afternoon I took my M10R out and came across a problem that I hope is simply something I don't understand about the camera. I wanted to shoot an instant but was disappointed to find the camera had gone to sleep and didn't fire when I hit the shutter release. I haven't had the camera very long. Can the M10R respond instantly as does the Fujifilm Xpro2? Have I missed something in setting it up? I fear it's flawed in this essential aspect. Mechanical cameras were always ready and able.

@jakepeters4370 in the main menu set "Auto Power Saving" to off, and do not use live view or a visoflex, even with Auto Power Saving set to off, once a screen is on, the camera will go to sleep. I never turn off my camera when I am out making photos, I often half press the shutter release making sure my camera never goes to sleep even with auto power savings set to off, and I don't use live view or a visoflex. Hope this helps

I used to depend on Reinhold Mueller here in Toronto for advice in the early days so I feel very much on my own when it comes to questions about the M10. I set the camera aside while I wrote this and it did respond as soon as I touched the shutter release. Fortunately I have 3 batteries. I'm laughing with excitement and gratitude to you, Patrick. You've made my camera much more valuable to me. Now I love it even more!

Thank you, correct.The more gear one has, the less creative he'll be, that's me. This is why I am finally letting go of a lot of stuff, gear and lenses because - I just want to make photos. I remember fondly my first 22 years of making photos, with one camera and one lens, two film stocks only, Tried-X and later on, Portra. @@nuj427 I never regretted selling my first 50/1.5 because it had a lot of marks on the coating so it produced less than perfect images at wider aperture and had terrible glow. The one I have now, the glass and coating are perfect, no glow wide open and plenty sharp. It is great on black and white and color digital sensors. I'll test it on color film in September when I get back home after the summer holidays

Excellent advice. How, though, can I use your advice on high ISO with my Leica M9, which gets noisy beyond ISO800, if not before?
@PatrickColpron
@PatrickColpron 4 ай бұрын
@@rolleicanon Thank you, greatly appreciated. I had an M9 and used it pretty much like I use my M10 in daytime. The one thing we have now which would have helped back in 2011 and 2012 when I had an M9 is the post-processing software we have now and I mean I would have used a combination of the noise reducing slider in Adobe Bridge with DXO's Topaz Denoise to find the right mix in reducing the noise. This said, I had no issue using iso 400 during the day and the noise ... well I'd live with it not to miss I shot I absolutely wanted to make. This said, this high iso advice is not for M9 users, but there are ways to make up for some of it with modern post-processing software and plug-ins. Hope this helps (I don't think I shot often past iso 800 with my M9 and gave up on the M9 because I couldn't work the RAW files the same way I could Nikon's D3 RAW files... but it was a great daytime camera and occasional nighttime shooter. I used it a lot at night in Toronto and NYC just with a much lower shutter speed.) The M9 is a different animal than the M10, the M10 has much more modern files which are more malleable and it handles high ISO like a champ, better than a Canon R5 that's for sure !
@rolleicanon
@rolleicanon 4 ай бұрын
@@PatrickColpron Many thanks. That’s helpful. I also find the M9 is great in bright sunshine, but not good in dim light. I’ve been dreaming of an M10 for a long time and only got the M9 in 2020 because of the low price. I now also have a well used SL, which is much better, and OK for close-ups because of the EVF and the close focusing button, but also larger and heavier. I am thinking of getting rid of my film Ms (3, 2 and 6, acquired before prices shot up) and my two old Barnack screw cameras and getting an M-10R. It’s difficult to let go of such solid, usable cameras.
@PatrickColpron
@PatrickColpron 4 ай бұрын
@@rolleicanon My pleasure, your M9 is a keeper, an M10-R or even just an M10-P would be a great addition. I prefer the rendering of the M10 and M10-P over the M10-R, richer more vivid colors and the reds are just like the red rendering of the M9, very accurate color rendering. Of the 3 cameras you mentioned selling - I'd keep the M2, my favorite film M camera of all times. An M10 or an M10-P would be even more affordable than an M10-R, the only reason I use my M10-R more than my M10-D these days (M10 and M10-P included) is that it is the black paint M10-R and just looks stunning, makes making photos with it more enjoyable. I am weird this way.

I started dabbling with DxO Photolab 7 to compare it to Capture One as I want to move away from Adobe products. I shot strictly film Leica for a decade in the US, but I live in France now (30 mins west of Paris) and honestly my motivation went down hill because of having kids and living away from the city life. During covid I just couldn't afford to keep shooting film so wanted to get into digital m. I also wanted to invest in scanning film with a camera also at the time so ideally was Sony, but in the end decided to get the x100v. I have a blast shooting it. Capturing daily life, and time to time candid stuff, but since a month ago I've been on the hunt for a digital m again. Not sure if i should go with the m10 (at $5k), or m10p ($6k), or just get up to date m11 (roughly $7k). I'm so used to charging the battery just by USB-C that just thinking about carrying a charger when I travel seems annoying. Allowing the choice of different MP is also a welcome for different uses. From the photo of all your cameras, you seen to have every model of the M10? Something tells me you don't like the M11? By the way, love your shots. I'm more a 28mm guy. I think I would go to town if I just have a body to shoot again.

Others will see and appreciate it more than our efforts in pleasing the algorithm, so to speak. (Regarding aging and the back, I can’t recommend strongly enough switching to a backpack. For all ages. Hanging a weight from just one shoulder, or over the shoulder, unnaturally pulls on every muscle, vertebrae and joint in our backs hips and legs. Our whole body is fighting to compensate constantly. Distributing that load evenly is key for our health, comfort and in increasing our time out shooting and enjoyment of it).

The shoulder bag was I started shooting this video with it over my shoulder, for continuity I kept it for every take. I shot the video by myself and kept the video camera and tripod in it between takes for the duration... My back is still hurting me, I picked the shoulder back because it was more stylish than a backpack but could have left the backpack under the tripod. Live and learn, live and learn.

A lot of sympathetic useful information (sometimes redundant, about composition for instance. A little editing might help... to keep it simple, apparently a said recipe for success, right? ;o). A lot of useful advice too however avoiding contradictions may also help: speaking of composition and mostly showing (street photo type) images where the subject is dead in the center of the frame. What compositional skill is at play there? It somewhat puzzled me. Use any old unsophisticated camera but I'll stick to my M10? Really? Another one in this video consists in downplaying the usefulness of shallow depth of field and then showing us tons of images where the background is out of focus. [by the way, IBIS can also be useful at times]. White Balance is not exactly another ingredient of exposure. Nothing may have the right color balance and be totally wrong in its exposure (et vice versa). As for "there is no bad picture of a burning monk" and the "one turd / two turds" advice... really? ;o) Anyway, entertaining, but long if not lengthy.
