Patriot Prime Reviews 1988 G1 Ultra Pretender Roadblock

In this video I take a look at ROADBLOCK, a Mega Pretender from 1988.
I knew absolutely nothing about this figure until 1984 when I saw him in a comic.
He's a very cool figure but hard to find complete due to his common affliction of "Gold Plastic Syndrome."

I’d love to see hasbro and Takara take another crack at the pretender to mass retail. Nothing much just make the robots core class so they can fit in the shells and give the shells arms and legs more articulation.

Great review! They totally went all out on these Ultra Pretenders, I just wish they didn't make them out of Gold plastic. I love the design on this guy, and out of the two Ultra Pretenders (Skyhammer for the Autobots) they made, Roadblock has all his GPS issues limited to just his inner most robot mode. According to his tech specs he has a Rank score of 9 placing him almost equal to Megatron within the Decepticon army, which makes sense seeing as his Function is "Ground Forces Commander". I never saw this guy in person until maybe a few years ago. Before then I always looked at him in my old Transformers pamphlets. Never realized just how small the inner robot was until seeing it up close. What's also a shame is that since GPS makes him soooo fragile, you barely get to truly use it to its fullest potential. I've had Bristleback since I was a kid and even back when I got him in 1989, GPS was an issue. His right fist broke one day while I was playing with him. Nothing else broke until last year when his robot mode shins/feet split down the middle while transforming him.

Never knew about this guy until got those more than meets the eye books. Great books indeed. I still laugh at how many Joes share names with transformers. I really could see Roadblock jumping the robot and taking the whole big vehicle for a spin while shooting down cons and cobras.

Great review man, I actually hunted down a roadblock myself for my mayhem attack squad set and I was able to find one in good shape. But like you said I’m very cautious about the Gold plastic

I'd buy some Generations Mega, Ultra, etc Pretenders. Especially Crossblades, Roadblock, Monstructor, etc. Come on Hasbro! (You could maybe Retool ER Fasttrack into Roadblock's inner shell and Cyclonus into the Outer Shell

A mega pretender is a pretender whose shell and inner robot can transform into something. Roadblock is an ultra pretender.

Cool review of a figure I knew nothing about except from the book you showed, which I also own. It's great seeing some of these guys in actual toy form, which otherwise wouldn't even really exist for me except as random illustration/bios, since I never had many of the figures that released from the Powermaster/80's movie/Pretenders era forward. Had a few here and there, but Hasbro started getting too hokey with things and so I stopped caring about anything Transformers except for the comic and cartoon...allllllll the way up to the American release of Robots in Disguise, aka Car Robots, which brought me back in. Although I had lost interest in buying the toys from that part of the G1 era, I kept most of my collection, which I still have, except for a few that I didn't feel like I really wanted to keep, *AHEM* (Wheelie...TWICE), and a few others that didn't meet my aesthetic criterium. Anyway, great review as always, and I look forward to the next!

I had this guy as a youth, loved it. Not many G1s had double jointed elbow. Alas the inner robot broke to pieces before I even knew GPS was a thing. Great review.

I would love to see this concept brought back in some way. A Transformers inside of a Transformer inside of (hopefully with modern hasbro engineering) a Transformer (rather than a big truck. Alternatively it wouldnt be impossible to reimagine Roadblock's final big Assault Vehicle as a combiner form for the inner guy and the pretender shell. Either way, I do think Hasbro is becoming less scared of using old Pretenders characters now.
