Bullshit!!! Man says Defensive Coordinator Covington makes good adjustments? Covington did not have Patriots best CB Gonzalez on Cooper Kupp or Puka Nacua for 1st 3 quarters of game. I don't call that making good adjustments. When I heard this I immediately left the podcast.

Hello. First, I do want to point out a bit of a correction, Gonzalez was in man coverage on Puka/Kupp for nearly half of their man coverage snaps in the game (especially early on when they called it more). Schematically, it is pretty common for teams to have their best receiver lock the X (the receiver on the Line of scrimmage), and allow for other players to take away the remaining threats with help from safeties/LBs, etc. The issue is that the Rams bunch/tight formations require a lot of communication to pass off, both in man and zone (with switch calls), and the inexperience of a number of players on the defense left them in a bad spots. This was particularly the case with legal pick routes. They adjusted in the 2nd half to include a bit more zone coverage, but even then a busted coverage out of cover 3 was the only play in the red zone for the Rams in that half. So it leads to the coaching question: Do we want to have our best take away their #2 in a familiar spot and scheme up ways to handle the three receivers, or do we want to have a lesser player vs their #2 (who at times was a blazing fast Tutu Atwell), and hope that the Rams don't nullify the impact of a Christian Gonzalez through their own scheming. Football is a ton of give and take and not every adjustment will provide the results we want, even if they are the correct counter-punch.

Hey K.T., I think the important thing to remember is that making good adjustments doesn't always lead to success. The Rams had 1 play in the Red Zone in the 2nd half (exactly on the 20), showing that NE's approach shifted. They went a bit more zone based, did a better job passing off some of the bunch/tight route combinations, and did enough in the 2H to set the team up for a shot at winning the game.
