the thing I love about this clip is seeing the audience actually listening to what he is saying. They are taking it in and thinking about it.

Horrible things were happening then and college students were demonstrating and marching in protest. We were all seriously invested in changing what was going on. Johnny was all about that also. Of course they were listening.

You're right, we need a man like that now. I wonder if he knew just how fitting that song would be this far into the future. Johnny used to go and perform free in the jails for the prisoner's.

Have listened to Johnny Cash all my life he was one of my Dad's favorites and I've heard the song bunches of times but I've never seen this performance or the explination of its origins. Yes it's sad that such a great man felt the need to wear black til he passed and this song is even more relevant today than ever...♡

Even sadder to think that if he was alive today, he'd still be wearing black

I was lucky enough to have been told the story by my Dad growing up & found this video a few years ago. My father didn't look up to too many celebrities, but he respected the hell outta Johnny Cash. What he'd been through, what he stood for & who he became...

I have never heard the story behind the song. This one and In The Ghetto by Elvis are sadly still relevant today. RIP Man In Black.

Johnny hosted Saturday Night Live once, and the cast obviously adored him. At the end of the show he sang "Sunday Morning, Comin' Down" as the entire cast (including Eddie Murphy) was seated at his feet.

But the beauty of the song isn't that it inspired young minds, it's that young minds inspired the song. At the start he makes reference to speaking with the students at this college, presumably about their anti-Vietnam war feelings, and how they changed his mind on some things.

Johnny Cash wrote this song. But I think those students helped him write it. He cared about what was going on then and until he passed. Those weren't just words to him. He meant what he said and said what he meant

Tell you what.... now that this week's country theme is winding down, if you'd like to learn more about the history and evolution of country music over the years, Ken Burns just released a 16 hour documentary on Country Music that is absolutely brilliant. It's incredibly informative, entertaining and a emotional watch. Thanks for the vids! (And bring Philip J. Frye back!! lol)

I remember when this came out. My fiance was in the South China sea along with so many other young friends from school. He came home from that awful war but not everyone did. Campus protests shut down my university, and we had just come through the worst of the riots over Martin Luther Kings assasination. It was a ferocious time.

You have to do three more songs by Johnny Cash. All three are very powerful songs. The last one being Johnny saying good by to all of us because he knew he would be with June soon. Johnny Cash - Hurt (Nine inch Nails cover) kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnKrdJmQibd6n6s Johnny Cash - Personal Jesus (Depeche Mode) sadly there is no music video just the audio track, but it's still amazing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWS0dXeijNKFb7M Johnny Cash - We'll Meet Again (Vera Lynn Cover) The last song on the last album he ever recorded. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWi0mYCQm8x7rcU
