I realized something during this, when Pat's mentioning some characters who just disappeared from the series and how he's glad some came back or got their own games. Billy apparently just walked off and lived his life after RE0. Imagine after surviving a crazy night of fighting monsters you never imagined would be real, then just going and living your life like "ya know, life throws you a curve ball every now and then." To support my point of "the characters don't seem to take their situations as seriously as they should (at least in the old games)" Steve asking Claire "what are ya, scared?" is so dumb because you're trapped on an island, I think a second island now, WITH MONSTERS! If their was one scenario for you to be scared in, this is it!

Piers, he was Chris Redfields twink partner in Resident Evil 6, whose death mattered more because he was a better written character, he got to be cool and badass, and he wasn't like Steve who sucked all the air out of cutscenes and whined like a disgusting pathetic brat, and yet Claire decides to be a chomo for him. She's in her 20s, he's a teenage boy, the fact she even considers being romantic to him makes her character look WORSE in the Remake and Revelations 2, because she's now and forever an ephebophile.

pat skipped over the most interesting note in the game: a resident evil villain explicitly considering the consequences of injecting themselves with a virus and taking logical steps to ensure it doesnt overwrite their actual humanity.

honestly i think there's a lot interesting to say about this game as the first resident evil with full 3d environments and a setting that doesn't include the word "raccoon". this playthrough started off being more about that but I can't really blame him for getting frustrated after some really bad losses of time. however i would also like to point out that most of those things he wouldn't have lost if he'd used his vast supply of pistol rounds instead of always going for the knife and trying to skip enemies like the moths. it's interesting that he noticed the run speed was slower but never considered that might mean dodging enemies isnt as viable. its clear they were trying to force you to actually use your resources in more cases. there's a lot of little things like that where they're not actually bad changes, but they just don't click with him as a person who so heavily venerates the classic games. when he was a kid he probably adapted to the new style of play better because he wasn't trying to play an archetypal classic re efficient speedrun style in a game that was trying to force a more measured pace.

Picia000123 To be fair many of these people need a reality check. The way some, and I do mean some, of them act is unrealistic at best and cringe at worst and nobody puts a lid on the bad actors. One thing they could do is buy porn, because games and sexual content doesn’t need to be synonymous. Grouping both in constantly is not healthy. I think many things can include things that are more risqué, but I have a hard time believing that these kinds of people actually buy their porn or support their local sex workers and shops.

I remember there was some anime game that came out a short while ago that was being published by Spike Chunsoft. I forget the name of it, but I remember reading a Twitter post about some localization changes that they were making for the western release. I hope that I'm remembering this right, but among the changes were the removal of two game modes / scenarios. One involved playing water tag with the games' cast, and the water would soak through their clothes to the point where they might as well be naked. It would show them in a bunch of suggestive poses and have other usual horny anime tropes. The other mode that was cut was watching and listening to the characters sleep. Now these by themselves might not warrant being removed... Until you realize that the characters you've been soaking with liquids and spying on in their sleep looked like pre-pubescent little girls. And believe me when I say that the fury in the comment section was LIVID. Boycotts here, swearing out the media team there. It was at about this point that I lost basically all faith in the anti-censorship argument. There are other examples I can think of, like the summon redesigns in FF8. People were getting pretty heated over the changes which basically amounted to no longer being able to see shiva's bush. So I find it very hard to fault Pat with his frustration over the conversation, and while some instances of self-censorship in games deserve to be discussed, a lot of them frankly don't.

It's not pissing me off because this game is fucking dogshit and every fan of the series that likes this shit, but rags on RE7 and RE8 like they're not real Resident Evil games- yeah okay! What part was your favorite of this game- the part where there's not one, not two, not three, but FOUR missable powerful weapons? The part where Claire being older than Steve, and being significantly more mature than him, and him being so child-like and the game positions them as romantic interests, makes their relationship legitimately disgusting and creepy? Double so when she repeats his line about guns being more reliable than people in Rev2, meaning she still pines for this child? The part where you have to play the same areas twice? What about how this games palette is shit brown and deathly blue, compared to the gorgeous scenery of every game in the series (besides RE5, which gets a pass because its coloring has a purpose, of calling back to things like Black Hawk Down)? Or how none of the guns have oomph to them, and to get anything out of the game, you basically gotta do a knife run because it's the only thing that fucks up enemies reliably. I mean, I could keep going! But I won't- this game is shit.

Honestly, it is nice to hear Pat explain what he means, I'd say he's right about alot of noise ratio blocking out the sound and there is good in calming down to take a breathe and look back, but at the same time, you take something like Fire Emblem Fates, which had a litany of issues with translations, cutting content, changing characters outright, I even heard they introduced some glitches, but, iirc, whenever people did say anything, it seemed like alot were being ignored in favour of or being dismissed as "people upset about anime waifus". And the playasia drama shouldnt have gotten anywhere as big as it did, I dont think people were doubting they were trying to capitalize on the DOA stuff, but the reaction to them saying theyll sell it and the following reaction to that made it way bigger than it really was.

@@TBnJgg TMS is an odd case. On the one hand, I get that they'd want to tone down the "creepy pedo vibe" that is found in the game (and the idol industry in general). On the other hand, you have stuff in one of the Directs (narrated by Bill Trinen, if I remember correctly) where they explained that they didn't do a dub because they wanted to "keep the game as authentic as possible". Toning down the overtly sexual idol stuff seems to fly in the face of that (to say nothing of the particular dungeon in which "toning it down" caused a pretty significant tonal shift in that particular section). ...and then there's the fact that Nintendo was completely okay with characters like Nowi running around in skimpy outfits, but felt the need to cover up Tharja's ass while she was shown wearing a bikini. They seemed to be all over the place with regard to consistency in "self-censorship" back then. Thankfully, they seemed to have rolled that back somewhat. All that aside: that ginger goblin is tryin' ta take away my animu titties, and I won't stand for it!

I feel this is an issue of "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." Pat may not care for people complaining about anime tiddys being censored but companies prepared to do this rarely if ever stop at only cheesecake censorship. By being arbitrary with what censorship Pat is willing to champion against he turns the debate from players vs production to moral crusaders vs weebs which achieves nothing but bickering and accusations. Even if something being censored is the most mundane clothing redesign I'd still cry foul as it's not what's being censored that matters but that censorship is taking place to begin with.

well, there's also this thing i heard from a bit back, it was admittedly just a 4chan post so take with grain of salt, but it was a thread from someone who apparently used to do localizing explaining that alot of the reasons you see changes, not all, but alot of it is due to how much they can charge companies. Like, if they do something like change models or dialogue or remove or even add stuff, they can charge companies that pay them more. Not sure if it justifies or explains it all, but it would explain alot of why the changes seem to be sporadic or inconsistent.

Censorship starts with the unpopular things, but once there's an inch they will take a mile. The "men find this sexy" excuse is terrible and should burn in a fire. I'm gay and hate melons, but I find the people trying to censor them as moral prudes who will not stop at making v-necks into turtle necks. If there were a real movement to cover women up, it would be an option to censor midriffs and cleavage not mandatory. Consumers should be given a choice, not reprimanded for wanting the authentic experience, even if that experience is just some weeb fan service. And a lot of the changed/removed content is so small, it's like why even bother changing it in the first place? I think that's what gets people so frustrated in the first place. The angle I come at it from is it shouldn't be changed unless it's by the original developers for a worthwhile reason. And by that I don't mean because of the publisher's demands or the localization team screwing up or because ResetEra/Twitter will cry about it and try to whip up a cancel mob. If you're reading this, Pat, I like you. You're a cool guy and I think you're right on a lot of stuff. Especially about thirsty weebfuckers. But I don't think we can call shitty localization "self-censorship" when it's an outside team changing things to meet their own sensibilities. Code Veronica may be pretty awful overall, but it does do some cool stuff. The cutscenes are really well directed and a gigantic leap forward from RE1-3 with static characters standing around waving their arms and brief lag between each camera change, and while CV is where Resident Evil became stupid, I appreciate they brought back Wesker and made him a dumb virus supervillain. That's the kind of stupid I want from Resident Evil.

My problem with censorship is that it's implicitly saying to people, "we don't trust you to handle this thing and the responsibilities that entails, so we're going to control your ability to do anything about it". It's not just videogames, it's media censorship, government censorship on speech, etc. Censorship at the end of the day is about someone else determining for you what's for your own good. Censorship to achieve a certain age rating to improve sales is unavoidable. Censorship that is altered for an agenda is bad. Claiming uncensored but the localized version is censored feels illegal. @5:12:00 Once again Pats wrong. Umbrella was investigated for connections to the Raccoon City incident but there wasn't any hard evidence associating them with it. What really took them down was Wesker stealing all of Umbrellas data from the B.O.W factory in Russia and using it to testify in court against Umbrella. This lead to Umbrella being shut down and a manhunt for Ozwell E. Spencer while Wesker sat in a dark room and waited for Resident Evil 4 to happen. Umbrella Chronicles is worth the lore dump. Explore it.

Yep I mentioned that in the RE3 stream. There was no proof or really any evidence that Umbrella caused the outbreak. All they had was Barry, Brad, Jill, Rebecca, and Chris shouting that it was umbrella. Meanwhile umbrella essentially owned the whole town and simply paid people off like the newspapers and chief Irons. Also the fact WESKER was the true person who took down umbrella is fucking hilarious to me. For all the effort all the other characters did, it was Wesker who brought down umbrella.

Also there might be other survivors. Remember Curtis Miller from the Degeneration CG movie? His family died in Raccoon City, not sure if he had his own survival story though.

I remember reading about the lack of evidence against Umbrella regarding Raccoon City as well; However, it was implied that the second incident on the island featured in 'Survivor', and a testimony by Ark Thompson (the games MC and friend of Leon) is what ruined Umbrella. Timeline-wise, I think Code Veronica takes place around the same time as the trials. I like the UC version better tbh, rather than having that nothing game and character being the pivotal point of what destroyed Umbrella.

The MGSV LP was a massive exercise in misery. Liam was TERRIBLE at it so I eventually just started skipping the gameplay to see Pat's reaction to the cutscenes. It pains me today to hear him shit-talk it on the podcast whenever it is mentioned because while it is definitely unfinished, what there is is great, but because he never even got to actually play it, he'll forever have a bad opinion of it. For me personally it's the scenarios the game throws at you. While the beginning of Leon''s campaign is really fun, the boss fights against Simmons are very restricting to your gameplay. I also didn't enjoy the mutating enemies in Chris and Jakes campaigns nearly as much as the zombies. The basic gameplay is rocksolid though and makes for a great mercenaries experience.

The real travisty is that it didn't have a physical release, so it was a 16 gig download only game for a system that at max has a storage capacity of 32 gigs without adding an external hard drive.

I don't know if Persona 1's white-washing of the Japanese cast was technically censorship but the USA did have kind of an Asiaphobia back in the 90s for whatever weird reason. Like watch out parents, your kids might learn other countries exist or something. That said the second half of the game might've been cut because it has a scene where a giant demon penis explodes out of a teenage boy's chest after his crush rejects him, but I've also heard it was deadline reasons. It's still on the disc, just inaccessible without a Gameshark and mostly untranslated.

Yes that happens in the second quest. Though technically its his Persona going out of control, and after calming it down he does regain control (and even uses it in 2 to become famous as fuck). The Snow Queen quest on record for being untranslated is due to deadline reasons. Which to how slow it took them in general being new to the game I kinda believe that. Also a fun note for Mark in Persona 1 is that they kept the lines of saying that he looks and acts like a monkey.

You wouldn't hear about "muh anime titties" so much if it weren't for the fact that 9/10 times that's the first thing on the chopping block when it comes to western censorship of Japanese games because America is full of puritan prudes, especially from localization companies based in California which are always paranoid about things being "problematic". Tom from XSEED, who was one of the big translators and later was in marketing for the company, fought hard against this and a lot of people in the industry did not like him for that reason. When he argued that the ages of the characters in Senran Kagura shouldn't be changed because "15 year old girls for the most part have a different perspective on love than 18 year old girls and this is reflected in the dialog by the fact that their mindsets are more in line with their actual age", all he got was scorn about how he was sexualizing underage girls, as if that's what he was trying to say.
