THIS CONVERSATION WAS ORIGINALLY recorded on cassette in the mid-1970s by Anthony and Ella May Damiani during a visit to Paul Brunton at his home in Switzerland. Anthony, who PB referes to as “Tony”, was his lifelong student and founder of Wisdom’s Goldenrod Center for Philosophic Studies, in the United States. Paul Brunton at Anthony's request, on that occasion, recorded the audio for his students.
The images contained in this video are originals photographed by Paul Brunton in his travels around the world. PB's pictures are in the archives of the Paul Brunton Philosophic Foundation.

Regarding the audio of Paul Brunton's voice on this KZbin Channel As explained in the audio, this recording of Paul Brunton was made by Anthony and Ella May Damiani during a visit with him in Switzerland in the 1970's. The original audio had lots of distortion, including noises due to PB's turning the microphone on and off, which created audible noise due to the fact that a tape recorder was being used and the stopping and starting created interference. The original recording is interesting because it shows how PB would pause before continuing to speak, but we felt that it was better to use the cleaned version for this KZbin channel. It was posted with the permission of the Wisdom's Goldenrod Board of Directors as well as from Anthony's family. It is true that some felt that it should not be shared as it was recorded for a more limited audience, but in the end the decision was made that the benefits of sharing it with a wider audience was justified. We feel that the many positive comments received from listeners has confirmed that this was a correct decision. Our thanks to the listener who commented about this and for providing an opportunity for us to explain. Micha-El and Gran

I first discovered PB when I walked into a bookshop in London and pulled out one of his books on the shelf. This was about 50 years ago when I was in my early twenties. At that time I was having so-called 'peak experiences' and I was searching for Truth. There were many books written on spirituality or mysticism and some had fantastic claims and I did not want to fall into the trap of believing in something that was later going to be proven to be impractical or false. Just upon reading a few paragraphs written by PB in that bookshop gave me the sense that this man had a journalistic mind and was not interested in false hopes or magical fantasies but hard core truth. That was what made PB stand out among the rest. In the world of spirituality and mysticism it is so easy to get lost in fantastic or exaggerated claims made by many teachers - not knowing if it was rooted in Truth or fantasy. PB's mind may be elevated to spiritual heights but his feet was always on the ground - connected to common sense and practicalities. Thank you for this recording. It takes me back to when I first discovered PB in that bookshop in London.

Dear Wolf, Thank you for sharing your experiences with PB and his work. We feel that you have captured the essence of what PB did and who he wrote. If you haven't seen it, the Volume of the Notebooks titled "The Sensitives: Dangers and Dynamics of Mysticism" deals in depth with the problems of teachers that you mention. We are always happy to hear from our listeners and to know that our work has value. Micha-El and Gran

I discovered Paul Brunton’s book almost 30 years ago when my mother read excerpts from his books to me. He remained tucked away in a corner of my heart and I found his book‘Hermit in the Himalayas’ more than two decades later in a tiny roadside stand in Mumbai. He has been a gentle and reliable guide, who led me finally to my own Guru, my living God. We all have guides in our lives who are willing to help us seek the Truth, if only we genuinely believe and want that Truth. Today I have heard the voice of my revered guide and friend and I feel honored and privileged to actually hear his words of wisdom. There is no doubt that he attained that Truth in his lifetime. Thankyou from the bottom of my heart to those who uploaded this. Bless you all.

Thank you for your kind words. It is gratifying to know that the You-Tube channel is offering you and others important 'spiritual food.' You may already know, but if not, the entire 16 Volume Notebooks of Paul Brunton has been published in India. The Notebooks offer his most mature reflections and his synthesis of Eastern and Western teachings and the majority of the material was written after his final realization. We find this material to be very powerful and relevant to our own spiritual searches. Peace and light Micha-El and Gran

I had an interesting thing occur with Paul's books. Both during and after my first winter in India, where I spent some weeks in Tiruvannamalai, I had people gift me two copies of his book 'A Search in Secret India'. I opened the first one to the exact page where he arrived at the Ramana Ashram, and upon receiving the second book, and telling that story as I opening it - I also opened this second copy to the exact same page! My connection to Ramana was more deeply revealed to me over the next year, culminating in direct guidance from him on my second winter there. It's a story I sometimes tell, of "When Ramana commanded me!" I appreciate that book greatly, in particular his account of meeting Ramana and the prompt it gave me to read 'Face to Face - accounts of meeting Ramana'

Thank you very much for uploading this incredibly rare recording of the great Paul Brunton. All my life I have been waiting to hear the voice of Paul Brunton - and now (after 50 years since first reading 'A Search in Secret India') at last I have heard it! I find it very calming. How could it be otherwise with such a great sage? This address, though, does not give more than a hint of the deep spiritual insight which PB manifests in his later books, notably 'The Wisdom of the Overself' and most especially in 'The Notebooks of Paul Brunton'. To me, those reign supreme.

"All systems of yoga are devices to bring the mind into concentration. When the mind is sufficiently quieted, then and only then can this higher self make itself known to you. But meditation, because it eventually offers so much, requires you to give much, in time, practice, and patience.... You must bring to this quest a feeling of worship because, after all, you are seeking communion with a Higher Power, with something above, beyond, and transcendent of yourselves. You cannot approach it as you would a professor. There is something sacred and holy even around the very concept of it, and you must awaken this attitude. It is like approaching a church which you really respect." Paul Brunton (1898-1981)

So great to hear the voice of Sri Paul Brunton . ' A Search in Secret India ' had a profound effect on connecting me even deeper to Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi . It was so wonderful to hear him at the start to say " I am not a Guru " . This is typical of the humble message of Sri Ramana . Like many others of a certain age (66 now ) I was deeply influenced by Yogi Richard Hittleman . I believe he had some connection to Mr Brunton ? Thank you deeply to Paul and to those who have posted this 🙏🕉️

Hello Michael: yes, like you, perhaps, I studied and practised Yoga via Richard Hittleman's TV series, 'Yoga for Health', in my native England in 1971. I regard Richard as my spiritual father. Inspired by him, I then found the much deeper (in some ways) writings of Paul Brunton. Despite what he says in this recording, I have always regarded him as my foremost 'guru'. He is unmatched (and I say that after 50 years of study of not only advaita vedanta, but Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism too).

@@johnrichardson6296 Hi John . Very nice to hear from you . We seem to have some shared spiritual history . Yogi Richard's TV yoga series in 1971 was very important for me spiritually - not least because 50 years later I am still doing his 3 day programme ! The spiritual thing had been bubbling along for me a nice early childhood , and had often centred around this question " who am I ?" . No one else seemed to be bothered by that question but it bothered me intensely , so to find Richard actually promoting the asking of this question was reassuring apart from anything else . Of course he pointed us all to Sri Ramana with whom I personally have a very close connection with. The thing about Paul , Richard , and moreover Sri Ramana - none of them said that they were a Guru ,unlike some pale imitations . Richard saved me from many false trails by advising that if you ever meet anyone claiming to be enlightened then ' run like hell ! ' . Best wishes to you 🕊️

@@michaeldillon3113 Hello again Michael. Thank you very much for your response - really good. Yes, Richard Hittleman also taught me many important things, including that it is essential to stay away from all drugs (not that I have been into any of them!). I bet he would not approve of the modern trend of taking 'ayahuasca' to 'gain Enlightenment'. Richard called such approaches 'knocking on the back door of heaven' - never truly entering! Yes, you were right in your original assumptions: Richard Hittleman DID know Paul Brunton (he says so in one of his deeper, more philosophical books where he is speaking to his students; 'A Guide to the Seeker', I think is the book). They were both at the Ramana ashram at the same time (although I believe PB was there more frequently than Richard). It is Ramana who clearly gave the spark of spiritual kindling (more than anyone else) both to PB and Richard. For me, these three are still the spiritual best of the best in the 20th (and 21st!) century - unsurpassed. If I had to choose, though, PB was really, really special and amazingly well rounded in all facets of his being. After 50 years, I still have not encountered his equal.
