Years ago at about 11pm some random night I emailed Paul Gilbert, on a whim, some simple musical question, and in 5 minutes received a helpful answer from the man himself, his sincerity and generosity of spirit will not be forgotten.

In 1989 I went to the NAMM show in Chicago as a guest of my brother who worked at a speaker manufacturing company. My brother had his own ticket and took me assuming someone from his company wouldn't show up and I could have their ticket. Eventually I did get in but before I could my brother met Paul Gilbert and asked him for an autograph for me because I was a huge Racer X fan. Paul gave him a poster of Paul Eating guitar shaped wheaties and signed it : To Joe, my best friend since 4th grade. I still have that poster and still quote it every now and then

Hell yeah! When I was 13 years old I saw Paul's email on his crazy website and sent him a bunch of annoying starter guitarist questions and he answers them all kindly and diligently. A true gentleman and kind soul. Crazy talent

Since everybody is talking about awesome Paul experiences, I saw the first ever Mr. Big show before they went on tour opening for Rush in the late 80s. It was at the Omni Club in Oakland California, a small venue, probably holds around 400-500 people. The venue booking guy was my buddy, Jimmy Arceneaux, so I was super stoked about this show. We waited for about an hour, and then someone came out and announced that somebody in the band was sick and they had to reschedule the show. 30 days later, I saw the most amazing show ever! Sound was absolutely perfect, Paul was wearing a custom blue suit with light blue F holes all over it. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen.

I was once at a guitar camp thing where Paul Gilbert was one of the guests of honour. Somebody asked if there would ever be a Mr. Big reunion and he said no, probably not, and they were all a bit tired of playing that one song. Just then, there was the loudest peal of thunder as the building we were in was struck by lightning. He cringed a little and, without missing a beat, started playing the intro to "To Be With You".

I had the privilege of doing a Jam session with him in the early 90's at a workshop in Portugal. I was a baby guitarist just born at that time, I had no idea what a guitar "monster" he was, times without internet, zero information 😎 I was so nervous that I started playing without connecting the cable 😅🥴 we played a blues, I remember improvising on Am pentatonic and adding the 6th to make it sound different, from the Dorian mode, he looked at me and his eyes widened, like, that's it dude 😁😁 so cool! I wish I could record that, cell phones neither 😂😂
