Paul Gilbert - The original plan was for me to guest with Albert Collins at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival in Germany, where he was the headliner. I was just supposed to do a solo exchange at the end. I wasn't the main act at all. But he got sick and cancelled the show. It was a last-minute decision, and everyone involved was in trouble. "He's not coming. What do we do?" And they said, "Paul, you're going to play!" I didn't know what to do, because I was alone and I didn't have my band with me. But there was a rhythm section. They were actually the drummer (Rick Lee) and bassist (Leo Lyons) from the legendary band Ten Years After. Albert Lee was playing at the festival, and he said, "If you need a band, you can use them." The show was in five hours and we were unprepared! So I said, "Well, pick five easy Jimi Hendrix songs and we had to get through the set. I'll play a very long solo. I'll play loud and fast for two or three minutes, then quiet for another two or three minutes, then loud again at the end. That way, each song will be about 9 minutes long. If you do that for five songs, you can do the set. And we did it. It was recorded, everybody liked it, and we said, "Well, let's release it as an album!" But there was a lot of pressure on me to release Tribute To Jimi Hendrix. Normally it would take me three years to make a great album for Jimi! But that was just an hour of rehearsal and 45 minutes on stage with no preparation. I just did the best I could at the time.

It's annoying because at that skill level there really aren't any guitarists who have a complete set of techniques that are more outstanding than an other. No one has better alternate picking technique than paul gilbert, but other people surpass him in other areas (gambale for instance for sweeping). Govan's alternate picking is actually kinda meh, but his sense of harmony and his giant vocabulary make him special. Shawn Lane was probably the only guitarist in a class of his own, but unfortunately he didn't write a lot of memorable music.

I’ve heard that Paul has been asked last minute to play n this festival. When he heard it was a jazz festival he said “I don’t play a lot of jazz” but then decided to play some Hendrix songs in a “jazz” style version. Considering he only had about 48 hours to prepare for this concert this is absolutely crazy.

Everybody's commenting on how not 'blues' this is!! Hendrix himself was not strictly blues. And I think it was Nil Lofgren who couldn't show up, so Paul was asked to cover for him with Lofgren's band with just an afternoon rehearsal. Remember this was Paul before he entered his blues phase. This was his Racer X/Mr. Big phase not Paul now with his blues, jazz and fusion releases of late

No need to argue about Govan or Gilbert. Both are great in their own fields. Govan has some nice techniques and mix it all up to his own verz musical style. Gilbert has very unique way of playing, he keep it simple lick-wise in the same time he plays this fantastic phrasing, nice vibrato, and he can deliver an entertaining show and Gilbert is a respected name in the music biz. Govan may have some more tricks in his pocket, but he is not close as famous as Gilbert.

World class performers of anything are bound to have people arguing about them: "person A kicks person B's ass". If you're great enough to warrant that kind of attention, and wish to maintain your skill level, your career, and your sanity, you wouldn't give much thought to such arguments, so how you feel about it is probably irrelevant. In most cases you probably aren't aware of such discussions; if you happen to read some comments, hopefully having reached the world class level of skill and after facing all kinds of challenges on thousands of gigs, your skin is thick enough that if anything, you'd just be amused or mildly annoyed and forget about it a second later.

PG is really amazing and technically a genius... I believe this is all improvisation. I bet Guthrie Govan can't play like this live with the same intense and performance bec guthrie is only good in mimicking others and for me he doesn't have the feeling i have for PG when they are playing guitars. Experience is where the gap between them is prominent.

paul is pure rock hes awesome his riffs like scarified and technical difficulties are cool but just look at guthrie, he literally has done things no other player in history has. he has a truly unique view of music just watch his lessons. his understanding of music and knowledge of unique harmonies is incredibly vast. he incorporates jazz, flamenco, country, indian sitar, to his music. there is no way to explain how truly fascinating he is.

@Gregorypeckory7 жыл бұрын
Yes it is absolutely blues. He throws in a few more notes than older blues players, but Hendrix' take on the blues was far more radically different than the iconic players he learned from than this is from Hendrix. So much time has passed that people forget or don't know what a musical revolution Hendrix created. For every revolution (or even sometimes slight deviations from tradition) there are counter-revolutionaries, angrily railing against change. Back in the late 1960s, they were condemning Hendrix' music, just like younger sticks in the mud for whom Hendrix is blues gospel, can be seen slinging mud at anyone who does a Hendrix tune that strays much from Jimi's versions. It is very silly, since blues is an expressive, improvisational form which affords great freedom for the adventurous interpreter, and arguably that is it's greatest strength and reason for being.

Id go as far as to say that govan is the technically better player but you really cant argue Paul's ability write a great song. Take his work with Mr.Big for example. Green Tinted 60's Mind had some really original guitar playing and you could tap the shit out of your foot to it. Shit, in 1992 you prolly coulda taken a chick on a date, played that song and got laid for it... HIs solo stuff has some great songwriting too. Songs like vibrato, hurry up and olympic come to mind! When it comes down to it, nobody made it for technique alone, Vai wrote great shit with David Lee Roth, Petrucci wrote great shit with Dream Theater, Malmsteen wrote great shit with Alcatraz and Steeler, Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani, Steve Morse, Andy Timmons etc. All those dudes have at least one thing in common and thats they wrote at least one killer song!!!

Govan is definitely light-years ahead of Gilbert. That means Govan has more technique, however Gilbert is the more musical one and more innovative player. Consider Paul's trademark bends, when he bends a note you can tell its him. Govan doesn't have any trademarks like that.
@witcheryify11 жыл бұрын
it's subjective really, i would say Govan is the more musical one, his blues stuff sounds a lot more natural and dynamic, and Govan has more harmonic knowledge and vocabulary in his playing, he rarely play sequences and scale exercises. Gilbert style is easier to approach and more straight-forward.

Govan is light-years ahead of Gilbert. Funny how you attempt to argue experience, as if it matters. lol. Babe, experience errr (being older.. nice euphemism) doesn't quite qualify as sound argument, when the guitarist you desire to characterize as inferior to Gilbert is a genius prodigy that accelerated in his apptitude for the instrument unlike maybe any player in history. Guitarists know why Paul prefers the key of E, too. It isn't because it's one of the more difficult keys on the guitar lol.

You couldn't be more wrong.. go watch the innumerable live performances of Govan on youtube. Gilbert is an Yngwie clone anyway, a complete plagiarist/rip-off of Malmsteen, that since those early days of mimicry has tried, to his credit, to develop an ability/uniqueness of his own to contribute something of worth to the world of guitar. He's failed.
