Paul McCartney Calls for Cannabis to be Decriminalised (1984)

In January 1984, Paul McCartney called for cannabis to be decriminalised in an impromptu press conference at London Airport. The former Beatles member was confronted by a press mob when he and his wife, Linda McCartney, were returning from a holiday in Barbados - where Paul had been charged with possession of cannabis. The musician's deft handling of the interview drew laughter from bystanders.
McCartney's relationship with cannabis is well-established in music legend. The Beatles' song "Got to Get You Into My Life" was written by McCartney after he, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr were introduced to the drug by Bob Dylan in 1964. McCartney was also arrested for cannabis possession in Japan in 1980, four years before this interview. Initially facing a seven-year sentence of hard labour, the star was deported back to Britain after spending just 10 days in a Japanese jail.

As of yet there are no actual statistics indicating increased crime rates or changes in overdose rates, One problem is that the RCMP in BC have refused to cooperate with the program and continue to confiscate "legal" amounts of drugs....so nothing really has changed on the street, beyond slight decreases in the numbers of people actually charged. We really don't know what the effect of this experiment has been, if any.

It’s well documented that it was initially criminalized in the US due to the ethnicities of the people that typically consumed cannabis (non white people). It was gaining popularity as the Mexican immigrant population was rising. “Reefer madness” etc. It’s not too hard to draw a line from that to today’s massive incarceration economy where the US relies heavily on incarcerated laborers to do extremely cheap work. They haven’t even really changed their target demographic for criminalization and it’s not like they’ve been really pardoning people that were already convicted. Socially it’s still not really acceptable across the board (drug testing in legal states, etc) and (personal anecdote) I still have plenty of friends that are terrified of being caught with a bowl or vape even tho it’s 100% legal in my state. It is crazy that some racist b/s from the 1920s still has rippling effects on something as insignificant as cannabis use.

Depends where you live. Here in the UK where Paul is from it's not as bad as it used to be but still very illegal.
