The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

A very talented band that didn't start to really shine until 1966's The Spirit of '67. Not a bad song on that one. Everything before that was pretty much hit or miss. Their greatest hits album was the first rock album I bought - with a handful of change I'd saved up - so they will always be huge in my little old heart.

Not on Sullivan,mostly with Dick Clark, these guys put on a comedy act during thier performances. Very fun group ! Seen them several times and talked to Paul Revere a few times. Nice guy...Rest in Peace

Freakin' awesome. These guys were just so talented. They would appear on TV late afternoons on a show called Where the Action Is and always brought the goods. Anyway, energy here is off the hook. And this was an AM radio hit. Mark Lindsay is generally a very underappreciated singer. Guy is just a fab vocalist. Sounds like a hybrid with Mark really singing to a backing track. TV shows in the 60s were not set up to play live rock bands properly although you would see it from time to time. Special shout out for Drake Levin the guitarist as he was one of the best players of the time. Thanks for the post.

Loved these guys back in the day. I recall being at a friend's house and we played the 'Mr. Sun Mr. Moon' 45 until is was worn out. I've played 'Him Or Me' to a couple of my younger friends and they all instantly liked this song. What can I say? A good tune is a good tune no matter what century you play it.

Yeah, wow indeed. I was watching a clip here of a compilation of Jimmy Page talking about his guitars, and one was talking about his dual neck Gibson, for Stairway in 1970, so he could play the acoustic intro and 12 string lead....lo and behold, the Raiders boys were doing it in '67, when he just joined the Yardbirds. I reckon Jimmy would be tickled pink to see this clip, probably had no idea the Americans were doing it. He also talked about the great Peter Green sound too, first time I ever heard him mention in such greatness, by a greatness! 😄

From the only episode of the Sullivan show on which Paul Revere and the Raiders appeared. They performed in three separate portions of the show. In the first segment, they sang "Good Thing" and "Ups and Downs". This video is the second segment in which they sang "Him or Me - What's it Gonna Be?" (which charted at 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the group). During the final segment later in the episode, they sang "Kicks".

Sadly, they are almost unknown in Europe. Some may remember 'Let Me', which was a Top 40 hit in West Germany. Don Fardon's version of 'Indian Reservation' (written by John D. Loudermilk) peaked at no. 3 in the UK in November 1970. In the US, the Raiders' version even reached the top a few months later. This was probably their biggest hit, though my favourite is 'Kicks'.

Drake Levin left the group in '66 but rejoined the band on guitar to finish the spring 1967 tour. Levin, Volk, and Smith flew to New York together when the Raiders were booked to perform on The Ed Sullivan Show. Revere was upset about Valley, Volk, and Smith leaving the group, blaming Levin for their departures. Levin showed up at the Ed Sullivan Theater to perform with Volk and Smith for the very last time, but Revere refused to allow Levin to play. Unbeknownst to the group, Revere had hired a new guitar player, Freddy Weller, to perform that night. Levin held no grudges about this; he showed Weller the chords to the songs and watched from the wings as the Raiders made their one and only appearance on Sullivan's show on April 30, 1967. It was the only time that the lineup of Revere, Lindsay, Smith, Volk, and Weller performed together.

That's from the third segment. They were running behind and it wasn't the band's fault, it was whoever was running the playback machine. He'd missed his cue, so the band was standing around waiting for their cue, and Ed got a little ahead of himself, thinking the band was going to play the last bit live. I believe that was the original intention, but since they were running behind, they decided to do the last segment to playback.

Saw a lot of the Raiders on TV from 7 to 12 years old. They were one of the bands that introduced rock and roll to me at that age. Mark Lindsay was also all over my older sister's Tiger Beat magazines during that period.

@@259Den3 If I remember correctly, this was actually Freddy Weller’s (guitarist) first performance with the band. He was hired by Paul Revere to replace Drake Levin. Phil “Fang” Volk, the bassist was on the verge of quitting the band and considering the fact that Weller likely didn’t know any of the choreography, Volk didn’t bother doing his typical dance moves.

I really like this recording. It seems that at minimum Marks vocals are live, and probably the drums too. The rest of the instruments are hard to tell with the jumping camera angles. Possible live on top of a backing track?

Various comments suggest only Mark was playing/singing live, but to me the drummer seems live. Either that or he was exactly on the mark for his drum breaks. Fantastic band however you look at them. The outfits may seem a tad silly in retrospect, but those were the days.

You can see around the 0:57 mark that Smitty tries to mime the heavy buildup of the drums but appears to pull out before that loud build up ends. Also you can hear a tambourine and shaker in the background (which are present in the studio track) yet none of the members are playing them.

However, another little quirk that I just noticed is that Smitty crashes the other cymbal around 1:01 yet there is absolutely no sound. *Edit* Another quirk that I just noticed that gives away the band's miming is in the guitar intro. If you may have noticed from the studio track, the intro actually features two guitar lines playing simultaneously before the drums/band kick in. Freddy Weller here opts to mime the higher-pitched guitar line (and some phantom is "magically" playing the other guitar part in the background).

The drummer is really hitting the drums. Usually the drummer would pretend to hit them because drums were loud and could be heard over the pre-recorded track. Vocals were live. Ed Sullivan always demanded a live performance, or at least live vocals.

Mark Lindsay was a great Jaggeresque front-man and a terrific singer. I wish the vocals on this clip were louder 'cause it sounds like they are dead=on with the backing parts. Despite the gimmicky costumes The Raiders made some great records. Their TV show was very funny. And their coordinated dance steps, along with the costumes, great musicianship, and top-notch songwriting made for some big entertainment.

@@mcashnv with the ending, it sounds like the ed sullivan engineers borrowed the master tapes of the song (since according to Tommy James, they liked to tweak them around to make the studio tracks sound more “live” when lip-synching/miming was involved) and directly spliced those sudden notes at the end to give it a conclusion. The new “ending” is quite sudden and doesn’t feel natural. The original song of course just slowly fades away, so there is no true ending. Regardless, having heard the original song so many times, it becomes quite apparent that the instrumental backing here is directly lifted from the studio version.

Funny thing is that, in the first KOOL Koncert '88, which celebrated a year on the air of the Oldies music format radio station 105.1 in Denver, CO. Then owned by Disney Media, this first 5 acts concert in the former Mile High/ Bears Stadium, was the next to last booked event for use, before demolished later. The current stadium "at Mile High" was built nearby and took it's place since. Paul introduced this song by saying, "This next song is one, not many Oldies or Classic Rock stations have on their playlist.., right KXKL !?"
