Great version and great man.- when you delve into the history of this song and this man, you find out there is quite a backstory, but you do not need to do that to love Mr. Robeson's performance. It stands on its own and is one of the loveliest versions. Thx.

I'm grateful for your comment, and completely feel as you do; thank you! I remember from my youth that older family members would say about some favorite singer, "I could listen to him/her till the cows come home." They weren't discussing Paul Robeson, or any singer in particular. It was just a way of saying they loved that performer! Well, since early childhood I've felt Paul was a genius, and wished for his friendship. Hope to meet him when my "cows come home."

NOT a wonderful person! He was a Stalinist right up until Krushchev made it non-PC for commies to be committed admirers of Stalin.
@syourke35 жыл бұрын
nfnairobi He joined the Communist Party when they were practically the only political party in the U S that was fighting for black people’s civil rights. He was right to do so but it cost him dearly. Robeson was a great man and a good one. Brilliant and extremely talented and deeply committed to social justice. Many American Communists were unaware of the terrible crimes committed by Stalin’s regime. They were not prepared to believe the accusations made by the anti -communist press. That’s why Khrushchev’s revelations shook the American Communist Party so deeply.
@donyawicken25214 жыл бұрын
@@syourke3 Thank you for this clear explanation. I wonder what it would take to cause a man of Robeson's caliber to look to communism rather than to any other party in the US for justice. I remember reading about how shocked and and disillusioned American communists were when they learned of Stalin's crimes.
@syourke34 жыл бұрын
Donya Wicken In the 1930’s, the U S Communist Party was in the vanguard of the civil rights movement and played a role in forcing Roosevelt to enact New Deal measures. The Communist Party has been effectively erased from our history books. My own grandparents were immigrants who were sympathetic to the Communist Party at that time. Remember this was the Great Depression. Working people were desperate. People were being thrown out on the street. There was no social safety net at all. My maternal grandfather actually travelled from New York City to the Soviet Union with the idea of settling the family there. This was during the 1930’s. He was there for a few months and was appalled by what he saw there. He came back to New York and he stayed there. I’m very glad he did. But people were deceived by the Soviet propaganda and people wanted very much to believe that there was a better world somewhere. It’s understandable. Even Martin Luther King was accused by J Edgar Hoover of being a Communist because the Communists were very supportive of Black civil rights.

There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole. There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sinsick soul. 1. Sometimes I feel discouraged, and think my work's in vain, but then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again. (Refrain) 2. Don't ever feel discouraged, for Jesus is your friend, who, if you ask for knowledge, will never fail to lend. (Refrain) 3. If you cannot preach like Peter, if you cannot pray like Paul, you can tell the love of Jesus, who died to save us all.

There are three things in this world that can't be explained. They are the meaning of the universe, the building of the pyramids and Paul Robeson. It is so complex to wrestle with the fact this man actually existed. If anyone reading this can tell me of one human that ever lived with such an array of gifts, please tell me. The equivalent of ten Mozarts. It was as if Jim Brown or Michael Jordan had a vocal talent like the almighty himself. Not only in the physical but also in the intellectual. Robeson through that golden throat spoke 20 languages fluently! An intellect greater than Einstein or Newton. If you have the privilege to hear him sing or act in film you know you are witnessing the consummate performer. What a threat to racists everywhere that the ultimate stage in human evolution was a black man. For this divine spark they hounded him, persecuted him and experimented on him like a lab rat. Like all these other glorious attributes, Robeson was a courageous champion for his people. ALL PEOPLE. Forget all the other celebs. I dont wanna be like Mike. I wanna be like Paul.

Blessed be the fruit. May the lord open. This is the national anthem of the regime of "The Handmaid's Tale" but of course means something completely different from what that evil fictional (or maybe not so fictional) regime stood for. Paul Robeson was one of the greatest singers of all time and stood for completely the opposite to the far right Gileadism - exactly the same as the writer of "The Handmaid's Tale", Margaret Atwood, one of the greatest writers of all time.
