Another random “once you get into the research” person with credentials that deem them as important talking vegetable oil being the cause of issues and not animal fat? Lump that in with the hundreds of books written by saggy old doctors telling you what they believe is true. And then you get the other crowd that says “starch/carbs” are the issue while they mean overconsumption of sugar, not just “carbs.” If you do actually “get into the research” dose, storage, use (frying, cold pressed oil), all matter. Animal oils don’t suddenly get a tag of “half monounsaturated and half saturated” with the addition of “so it doesn’t make sense why saturated fats are being blamed.” Both of those exist exclusive of each other...because dose means everything. Just as coconut oil shows some possible negative effects on cholesterol because of the saturated fat dose. Also, the matrix of the food influences the ultimate outcomes in the body. Choosing a few bare vegetable oils that happen to be worse for you (let’s say soy oil and canola as basics) and saying that all vegetable oils are more to blame is basic surface knowledge on nutritional science that’s spread by people who say “if you get into the research.” Follow the research yourself, not what some guy tells you to look at because he’s cherry picking, and be open-minded. People like this muddy the waters. And ultimately they are in the wrong side of this. Because they give one side leeway and blame another, when it’s all to blame in different contexts.

The long story short is that the heart disease crisis didn't begin until everyone started smoking processed cigarettes, and the obesity crisis didn't begin until they told us to stop eating cholesterol and saturated fat and to start eating "vegetable oils". These vegetable oils are really "industrialized processed seed oils" - basically waste oil - high in these unstable, rancid omega-6 fats, and they're the REAL drivers of our health problems. The longer story long: Cholesterol / saturated fat (eg animal fat) = satiety. Combine them with protein like in a steak and you feel FULL. Seed oils (omega-6 fats) = HUNGER. Literally driving the munchies via endocannabinoid activation. When you start eating ancestrally (eg animal foods, some plants, and NO processed carbs or seed oils), your LDL often goes up.This scares people, because it's been weakly associated with heart disease. Note that LDL is the ONE marker that doctors have been able to treat (with statins) without killing you. Statins are insanely profitable but practically useless for the entire population. So if people are getting insanely healthy / shredded / focused with an ancestral diet high in red meat that sometimes raises LDL when they become lean enough, it's driven them to question the "LDL is bad" mantra. And it turns out that if you're eating right, LDL is nearly MEANINGLESS. Triglycerides and HDL are far more important in a lipid panel. So are fasting insulin and HbA1c (blood sugar markers), two things most doctors sadly still don't even measure. I went down this road personally, and with the help of Dave Feldman mentioned in this video, as well as Ivor Cummins, dug up 4 enormous observational studies that showed people living LONGER and BETTER with high LDL - so long as triglycerides were low and HDL were good, just like my blood work showed. You can read it all here: blog.priceplow.com/diet-research/ldl-cholesterol Hit me up with any questions. I have research all over the place on this stuff. Once you realize how bad these seed oils (and the linoleic acid inside) are, it's a shock... because that garbage is EVERYWHERE. -Mike

@@gtfourziggy2 I mostly agree if you need to keep it super simple. Caveats = pork/chicken that is fed soy and other garbage - they are higher in PUFA and linoleic acid. Grain fed beef is higher in omega-6 too, but not horrible. On the plant side, there are good saturated fats in coconut (I like MCT), and cocoa butter (stearic acid = SATIETY), and you can get decent omega-3s in the form of ALA (but not DHA!) from walnuts, chia, and hemp. Might have to grind the chia down. There's probably a few others, but most other plant fats are garbage. I'm a bit less on the monounsaturated fat train than most health advocates out there, personally. Saturated + omega-3 for me.

Two years ago, I had an anxiety attack that I thought was a heart attack. I checked in to the hospital, where they calmed me down, checked me out, and gave me a clean bill of health. BP, 112/72; resting heart rate, 54 BPM; cholesterol, 158 with optimum levels of HDL and LDL. Eleven months ago, I had, and obviously survived, a widowmaker heart attack - 99+% blockage of the Left Anterior Descending artery. They told me that the most likely explanation is what they called a plaque blister. Tissue covers build up of plaque, then ruptures, sending it downstream where it eventually gathers and creates a complete or near complete blockage. There are perfectly healthy people with 35% blockages. But, if that plaque dislodges and gathers at an artery bend, the result is, well, bad. Having experienced both an anxiety attack and a real heart attack, I now know the difference. They're nothing whatsoever alike.

@@aidancoll919 An anxiety attack is just that - elevated respiration and heart rate due to an adrenaline overload. Certain people are especially prone to them. I am amongst them. The lead up to the heart attack was quite strange. It started with tingling in the extremities - like a tourniquet had been applied to all four limbs. I felt light headed and dizzy (decreased blood supply to brain). I had the pain in my left arm. It was a dull ache, almost like a case of decompression pain like scuba divers can get from ascending too rapidly. Cold sweats like I'd never experienced. They were instant and *ice* cold. Nausea, vomiting. They call that specific type of heart attack the widowmaker because the survival rate is very low. You've got better odds with a gunshot wound to the chest.

what medical school says to this: fat and fatty molecules, like cholesterol, cannot just be in the blood as they are, they need to be put in lipoprotein vesicles. LDL: low density lipoprotein, is formed in the liver (which is like the center of metabolism) to provide cholesterol and fat for the cells in your body. the cells in your body have receptors to receive these necessary molecules. but if they don't need more, they will stop building those receptors. so the LDL will stay in the blood. and at some point it will alter the blood flow and chemical homeostasis so much that there will be more inflammatory and thrombotic events in your vascular system. this means higher risk of stroke, heart attack and so on. HDL: high density lipoprotein, is formed by the cells, to bring cholesterol and fats they don't need to the liver. high LDL and low HDL: the LDL is stuck in your vascular system. high LDL and high HDL: higher metabolism, so more LDL is actually used in the cells, as part of a working metabolism. it is not "stuck", but just transported more often at the same time.

The scan will produce are CAC - coronary artery calcium score - that will tell you how much blockage/plaque you have. If your score is low, like 0, I would no way take statins. The radiation of scan isn't much - comparable to mammogram. If the score is high, I still wouldn't take statins, I'd go low carb and get metabolically well. consuming foods high in cholesterol specifically (i.e. eggs) has never been proven to increase your cholesterol levels so don't have to worry about that. Eating foods high in fat increases your cholesterol. What this guy is saying is that having high blood lipids (LDL) alone might not actually be bad for you, it's really interesting stuff. Particularly his point on fasting makes a lot of sense; burning more fat requires transport of the fat throughout the body during fasting, which is the function of cholesterol. High Blood Pressure is a way bigger deal IMO.

@GardenGuy19424 жыл бұрын
We know that LDL is a positive risk factor (more is bad), and HDL is a negative risk factor (more is better) - key word here being *risk*. Both are necessary for metabolic function, and monitoring your LDL/HDL levels are important. What we don’t know is definitive pathology of atherosclerosis (endothelial damage is current scientific thought). So it doesn’t mean that LDL is necessarily bad, just that having LDL with other conditions is bad.. (ie being an obese smoker getting COVID is more likely to die than an athlete getting COVID).
@TehMadCow4 жыл бұрын
Well, the key difference is their densities, it’s in the name HDL = “high-density lipoprotein” & LDL = “low-density lipoprotein” lol. This guy talks suspiciously fast & uses terms/language that would be pretty confusing to someone who isn’t already fairly educated on the subject (although I did like his bus analogy). I could only follow because I’m a biology major & recently took a physiology course. This guy is not changing the international medical/scientific community’s opinion just because he manipulated some pre-existing data to make a new graph, scientists already know there’s a chance we might be wrong about something but will always go with whatever shows the strongest evidence...& in this case the evidence mostly shows that high LDL levels can potentially lead to heart problems (especially in males) but there’s other contributing factors like genetics & sedentary lifestyle that contribute to the health risks more than just diet alone.
@GardenGuy19424 жыл бұрын
@@TehMadCow yeah, and more specifically the endothelial damage hypothesis is gaining more and more traction. Fats/cholesterol are a normal thing in the blood, and we normally have like a 4:1 ratio of LDL to HDL. Getting more specific, atherosclerosis is now being argued to be more of a chronic inflammatory disease than anything else. Cell bio of it is pretty wild. The guy does talk super fast tho, I was only able to keep up bc I’m in med school & been doing research on atherosclerosis for the past few months. It was refreshing to have a guest on that was scientifically literate but I can totally see why majority of JRE fan base is thrown off (bc normally Joe would be able to re-package explanations from guests).

@@TehMadCow how do we measure something that can "potentially" happen? There is no mechanistic evidence of how ldl cause heart disease. All we have is epidemiology studies which show a weak correlation (lots of noice) and based on survey data and average people in other words unhealthy people
@GardenGuy19424 жыл бұрын
@@miguelespejel2462 We actually do have mechanistic evidence, not sure if your knowledge is only based off of video but if you’d like a deeper explanation: when the endothelial wall is damaged due to sheer stress and/or toxins, LDL is able to deposit in tunica lamina, initiating macrophages to enter from blood stream for phagocytosis. Essentially, the LDL is eaten up by cells in our immune system until they become so full that they burst, the LDL becomes oxidized by ROS, and all the oxidized fat & necrotic contents trigger more signaling (calcium for example) and more immune responses. Smooth muscle cells in tunica intima and media proliferate. All of that dead “junk” can eventually build up so much that it can either occlude arteries to decrease perfusion or the already damaged epithelial wall can form a fisher exposing thrombotic contents to blood, platelets try to clot it, but because there’s so much pressure the clot can break off and clog up an artery (this is commonly the cause of strokes & “heart attacks”). If you’d like peer-reviewed articles I can send you some PDFs.

Dr. Sapolsky covers this in his book (which Joe still seems to never have read along with most of his amazing work...) "Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers". One short answer is it matters less about hdl/ldl content as mentioned and more to do with the impact of stress (especially chronic). Stress contributes to damaging the arteries, which causes rips and tears along with development of scar tissue (basically less flexible veins = harder to pump/more pressure). Plaque accumulates in pockets and cavities created from damage and can run risk of releasing and causing stroke/aneurism (especially with the increased pressure/stressed if veins have scar tissue).

I like the concept of "fasting causes more ldl". Eight hours of fasting clears the liver, basically, of glucose and we start to burn fat. So, ldl carries the fat to everywhere (mitochondria) to burn it. What I do not understand is that in taking a blood test, you are told to fast. My highest ldl thus far is after fasting for, if I remember, 20 hours. Supposed to be 12. So even with what the drs. prescribe in terms of fast before test, you get an elevated ldl level. It is not your normal everyday level of cholesterol. And they usually want it to be below 100. I can't understand why they want you to shortchange yourself of energy, especially at a point at which you are aging. But, for the purposes given, the test would be invalid as well.
@capshorts00 Жыл бұрын
id assume that if cholesterol is raised, the fasted state would still be higher than a normal persons fasted state and look much more apparent
@redledbetter1 Жыл бұрын
I thought this exactly as well. My guess is that they administers are trying to present as best a level playing field as possible. Variations in these numbers will occur naturally because of recent diet up to the testing. If the normal person obstains from causing these fluctuations, however minor, by fasting as everyone else has, they have a better comparison to draw. This however doesn’t take into account fluctuations from other stimuli outside of that brief fast such as the guy in this comment section that said his ldl’s were high but he had just finished fasting for Ramadan. I believe his whole point was this discrepancy, in that ldls aren’t equally harmful or indicative of heart disease when compared in someone of low metabolic health and someone of higher metabolic health.

Translation plus a little more: High HDL is associated with good metabolic function and decreased cardiovascular risk, even with elevated LDL. High LDL with low HDL is associated with metabolic disfuncition such as Diabetes, or insulin resistance, and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Increased LDL alone is not a good measure of cardiovascular disease, a better one is elevated triglycerides. Other very important factors in cardiovascular disease are inflammation or injury of the endothelial wall by things such as hypertension, glycation, oxidated LDL, and LDL particle size, . As far as particle size, the smaller sized are thought to be more atherosclerotic. Finally, different nutrients affect inflammatory/metabolic state in a positive or negative way, inflammatory states most commonly hyperinsulinemia are thought to favor production of small particle LDL. There is more to it, I'm not trying to say these are the only factors.

He misinterprets the data. Nobody worth their salt is saying LDL is bad. But it is the ApoB lipoprotein that carries ldl part to places you don't want it. Higher ApoB is generally associated with elevated LDL but not always. Some people have high LDL but not high ApoB and vice versa. So, Paul is misrepresenting some of the data. The biggest problem today is not nut and vegetable oils but overconsumption of calories and lack of caloric expenditure. His whole argument falls down because of this because if you look at the data, all the problems of modern times coincide with the introduction of hyper-palatable foods, the biggest problem with these foods is the lack of nutrients (as in micronutrients), and excess of calories. (usually by the combination of sugar and fats). Saying all this started because of vegetable oils is either naive, plain dumb or because he is trying to peddle an agenda (ie: being controversial and getting a lot of views = money because of it), For many people (but not all), going on a diet high in saturated animal fats will lead to higher ApoB, this is well documented in the scientific literature. Not doing anything about it will almost certainly lead to an early death.

Veins are lower pressure bringing the deoxygenated blood back to the heart, veins have a wider diameter and thinner walls/layers (less smooth muscle) compared to arteries, they’re less elastic too so they are generally more ‘loose’ in comparison, so the blood can pass through more easily. Veins also have valves to hold blood/make sure blood only goes in one direction & veins use surrounding skeletal muscle to help pump the blood towards the heart, as opposed to arteries which have no valves & have smooth muscle in their layers. So basically, because arteries are thicker they have a smaller diameter so it is easier for that to get clogged up over time than veins.
@SaggersAlt2 жыл бұрын
Calcification of arteries is one of the primary reasons for heart disease though. So when you make the argument that blood flows smoother in veins than arteries because of them being tougher, it sounds pretty dumb. It's the opposite. The stiffer the walls, the higher risk of atherosclerosis.

I am 37 y/o (M), 147 lbs, 5'10.5". Have always been slim; I have a tough time putting on weight. I have averaged 350 miles the last 2 years. In October, my LDL, HDL, Tris, and Glucose came up at 163, 63,118, and 101, respectively. I decided to make some changes to my diet which involved a morning smoothie (Skim milk, peanut butter, oatmeal, a banana, an apple), chicken/turkey for lunch/dinner with either brown rice, quinoa, or sweet potatoes). I reduced my added sugar intake to the point where I have had a hard time coping with the cravings (specially coke). I recently (January) redid my blood work and the results showed improvement: 140 (LDL), 58 (HDL), 72 (Tri), 91 (Glucose). Regardless, my dr. suggested I start taking 10mg lovastatin to bring my LDL down to what she considers normal levels (100 mg/dL). I am clueless in terms of diet as to why my LDL are above normal levels ( I don't eat a lot of processed food, foods with high fat content, or most dairy products); I constantly hear it must be due to genetics. I'm unsure weather I should be taking statins given my numbers. The information out there is overwhelming. I decided to begin but I'm considering stopping after 3 months when get another lab-work again. Suggestions?

Statins interfere with basic Cholesterol liver functions like: make Insulin, Vitamin D, hormones etc. That's how you go further down the medical rabbit hole and iatrogentic merry-go-round with reliance on their drugs and services. But what I noticed in this video is: (1) When he mentions LDL oxidation that's actually why high LDL benefits the immune system. That process acts like a soap and detergent and is antifungal and antimicrobial that cleans through out the body. LDL and glucose levels rise when you fast and part of immunity. (2) His analogy of LDL being a "Full Bus" and HDL as "Empty Bus" is WRONG. There's a cycle and regardless what part of it you jump in on it goes something like this: (A) Cholesterol the liver makes gets shipped out as LDL for your cells etc. (B) The Cholesterol your liver takes in from food raises HDL for Hormones, Vitamin D, Insulin production etc. (C) Sugar and Trans Fats coming in also get converted to Cholesterol and LDL. So "The Bus" is never "Empty". Cholesterol is either "Incoming" to the liver as HDL for conversion, or "Outgoing" as LDL for cellular maintenance. That's why fasting HDL drops because it's not coming in, and LDL rises because the liver is releasing to maintain. (3) Saladino's diet full of animal Fats raises both HDL and LDL. The real trick and key to all this is that when people go "Healthy" they drop or lower foods like: cookies, pastry, baked goods, soda that are full of Sugar and Saturated-Trans Fats that feed into the Fatty Acid cycle mentioned above and get converted to useful Cholesterol. Their new "Healthy" choices are actually not supplementing enough the position of the previous Sugar and Fats from "bad" sources, then you or he didn't feel right. So what Saladino did is he went from a raw Vegan diet which could not give enough basic nutrients, to an animal based one with Sugar/Fructose and Fat levels that work for him. His eating of fruits, organs and flesh is just doing what cookies, pastry, baked goods, soda and "Comfort Food" does by raising Glucose and Essential Fats. It's not about the Protein, whether from vegetable or animal sources, because too much Protein also becomes Fat. It's about Sugar, Cholesterol and Saturated-Trans Fats. That's why it's called "Comfort Food". (4) So whole point is yes you can achieve health by: (A) balanced "Comfort Food" diet with proper proportions and calories which is easier to supply and maintain, whether Vegetarian [not Vegan] or animal flesh based with fruits, vegetables and eat plenty of common baked goods, pastries, soda etc.... or (B) some type of "Caveman" fruit, organ and flesh based diet that is gonna be harder for children and an entire family to maintain, either by food choices and amounts necessary, or simply the cost since Saladino's overlooked preference is "Organic" and "Grass Fed".

I have been studying this subject for countless hours, and yet 2 very important questions remain: how much + what kind of carbs are needed, combined with high LDL, to start causing atherosclerocis? If carnivore and keto people have very high LDL, and if our ancestors had very high LDL because they were often fasting, but also eating almost only meat for 90 000 years during the ice age, then it is not high LDL alone, but the mix of high LDL with other variables that will cause clogged arteries (although I am aware you can clog arteries with low LDL too). But who is more at risk? Low LDL people who eat like $hit or high LDL people who eat like $hit? That is the first question Now let's say a 200 lbs bodybuilder eats 9 eggs per day, 2 lbs of extra lean ground beef, but also 350g of carbs daily (rice, veggies, fruits), and avoids sugar and seed oils. Let's say he also has very high LDL, like 220, and has fine HDL and low triglycerides. Will he develop atherosclerosis just because of the huge amount of carbs combined with high LDL? Or is he fine because he is metabolically healthy and the carbs are not refined sugar? When a lot of "good" carbs are combined with high LDL, can we still clog arteries? I see all these doctors saying high LDL is not the cause of atherosclerosis, and I believe it, but I have seen athletes clog arteries at 40 years old. They had great cardio and avoided sugar. Is it really only because they replaced butter with margerine? Or is it because they had too many carbs even if they were not sugar? That is the second question and I haven't seen any doctor tackle it yet. What matters most: the quality or the quantity of carbs?
