One of the most thought provoking songs ever, espc this verse: God only knows God makes his plan The information's unavailable To the mortal man We work our jobs Collect our pay Believe we're gliding down the highway When in fact we're slip slidin' away

I've often commented that a Paul Simon album is worth buying purely for the lyric sheet. Once you add beautiful melodies, incomparable arrangements, inspired musical performances and peerless production, the man has no equal.

You can hear Paul's voice crack when he sings "He kissed his boy as he lay sleeping, then he turned around and he headed home again." I love how Paul subtly bares his soul while making universal observations about the human condition. When people ask me who my favorite poet is, I know I'm expected to say someone like Wordsworth or Dickinson or even Bob Dylan, but my answer is always Paul.

@@ccasey1904 A kindred spirit! It's almost impossible for me to pick a favorite Paul Simon lyric, although I often settle for the last line of "Train in the Distance."
@ccasey1904 Жыл бұрын
@@samhendrian8658 I love all his songs! Richard Corey is sad but more true than most people realize probably! I came across an old cassette (of all things). I think it was “Songbook” or “Notebook”? And heard a Paul Simon song I had never heard before. Forget it’s name now. I could never pick a favorite line, sorry to say. Isn’t “Hazy shade of winter” Simon and Garfunkel’s too? “Kodachrome” is also a favorite of mine.
@samhendrian8658 Жыл бұрын
@@ccasey1904 Ah yes, all wonderful choices! "Kodachrome" is one of my favorites too, and "Richard Cory" is beautifully heartbreaking, I remember studying the poem it's based on in high school.

Almost every time that Paul Simon has released a new record, all the way back to 'Sounds Of Silence', there's been a song on it which makes me seriously ask, "Is this the best song he's ever written?" At various times I've considered 'Sounds of Silence', 'America', 'Bridge', 'Something So Right', 'Late in The Evening', 'Hearts And Bones', 'Graceland', 'Proof', 'Darling Lorraine', etc to be his supreme compositional achievements. When 'Slip Sliding Away' was released as a single, I couldn't stop listening to it on repeat for weeks. It took me a month just to flip the disc over and discover the magnificent and scandalously undervalued 'Stranded In A Limousine'! We are honoured to be living in the time when Paul Simon was creating music which, more than any of his contemporaries, will almost certainly be valued for generations to come, long after the Dylans, Springsteens, Beatles and Elton Johns are known only to historians.

Trumpet players will immediately recognize the trumpeter in the backup band is playing a "C" trumpet (usually the key of choice trumpet played in a symphony orchestra.) Bb trumpet is the trumpet almost always used in jazz and rock. As a trumpet player, I wonder why he chose to use a C horn?
