Paul Stamets (@PaulStamets) is an intellectual and industry leader in the habitat, medicinal use, and production of fungi. Part of his mission is to deepen our understanding and respect for the organisms that literally exist under every footstep taken on this path of life. Paul is the author of a new study in Nature’s Scientific Reports, which details how mushroom extracts-specifically extracts from woodland polypore mushrooms-can greatly reduce viruses that contribute to bee colony collapse.
Paul is the author of six books, including Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World, Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms, and Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World: An Identification Guide, and he has discovered and named numerous species of psilocybin mushrooms. Paul is also the founder and owner of Fungi Perfecti, makers of the Host Defense mushroom supplement line, and it is something I’ve been using since Samin Nosrat recommended it in my last book, Tribe of Mentors.
Paul has received numerous awards, including Invention Ambassador (2014-2015) for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the National Mycologist Award (2014) from the North American Mycological Association (NAMA), and the Gordon & Tina Wasson Award (2015) from the Mycological Society of America (MSA).
The implications, applications, and medicinal uses of what we discuss in this interview are truly mind-boggling, and we get into some of my favorite subjects, including psychedelics and other aspects of bending reality. If you’re interested in contributing to psychedelic science and research, you can do so at MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies), or if you’ve got $100,000 or more to spare, visit me at tim.blog/science.
I hope you enjoy this entire interview, but if you only have time to listen to one part, I recommend checking in at the [56:24] mark to hear how Paul’s first experience with psilocybin mushrooms affected his lifelong stutter. Enjoy!

Truth be told my man I've seen it b4 with the mice and the cocaine they dont even look at the female or the food or water or even run on the wheel they just eat the coke till they die. wonderful experiments all over the damn country on stuff like that I thought I saw and heard it all when it comes to that kind of thing but evidently everyone has there theorys and speculate on things that could be the best outlet, its actually troubling to even see anything about coke on here lol give them mice or monkeys the coca leaves somehow and watch that action. I'm sure if we looked around on KZbin you'd see the direct opposite of what you were looking for lmao it happens alot.

I'm beginning to think there's something to the beating of the ground that also triggers pin growth in Psilocybes. I've recently found them growing on the edges of football & cricket fields. I've also noticed a number of 'smashed' mushrooms days after & have come to the conclusion that the football helps spread the spores as it goes out of play into the lush longer grass & creates flushes. I've noticed far more grow near the football fields than the lesser used cricket pitches. Also there are fruit trees surrounding but the mushrooms don't seem to favour growing underneath them, despite having a perfect carpet of rich moss but rather upon an inclined bank (45 degrees), with tiny flushes of much darker smaller mushrooms clustered underneath clover nearby one large lighter coloured prominent one, almost signalling with a little liberty flag that winter's medicine is nearby. Fascinating stuff. :)

Paul, I am close to your age and my life path seems to have paralleled your life closely. In Elementary school, I was given an IQ test and told I could go to the playground when I finished: consequently, I finished in 20 minutes without reading many of the question and had a score of 70. I also had a speech impediment and in 5th grade had to miss math to go to speech therapy. After Vietnam and Penn State University, I was accepted in Mensa. During the early 70s, I did large doses of LSD more for a spiritual quest than to get high. Listening to your stories, remind me of so many of my experiences. I'm a disabled vet, and my home nurses keep telling me to write another book about my life. But, even though I was encouraged by James Kirkwood to do so as well, I never got published. Even the authors and books you read are the same I read as a high school drop-out in the military. Herman Hess, Irving Stone, Tolstoy and Henry Miller. I too have been a martial artist for 50+ years starting with John Korab as my first instructor and later Shotokan, Kali, Ryukyu Kempo, and Hapkido.

Love the passion that Paul Stametes has for fungi, not to mention his endless knowledge and personal narratives about the topic. His life truly is centered around this amazing and ancient life form that truly has untapped potential and application today. Civilizations of the past knew its value. Yet modern civilization criminalizes and restricts it. So sad. But Paul is a captivating genius. Thanks for sharing this in depth video. Very cool!

Anyone knows what those would be ? I love Paul Stamets. Wonderful work. We also need to reform the sewer systems. We need to convert to composting toilets. It's very easy my husband and I have converted several years ago and it works very well we are putting the nutrients back into the soil. You use a regular bucket and use a bucket toilet seat and put grass clippings into it then stuff each time with pounds of grass clipping. Empty compost buckets into outdoor containers (we use trash containers) drill little holes into the bottom for worms. Let sit for three months or so and then turn over and empty onto ground.

A note on the economic side of the problem - nearly any destructive economic issue can be traced back to rent. Daily commutes, cost of living, cost of business, the need to push products and so-on, all derived from the sheer expense of rent. Even as far back as Adam Smith, classical economists have railed against landlords for extracting value from the land itself. A solution proposed by Henry George, land value taxes funding a citizen's dividend, provides a systemic remedy for nearly every problem in society. Not a cure, to be certain, but a remedy.

I have had chronic anxiety and depression for most of my life (I'm 65! finally on Medicare!). The ruminating intensified this past 1.5 years after I experienced a mild concussion in a car accident. I was able to experiment for about a month with micro dosing psilocybin when one of my kids was able to get ahold of 4 grams. The difference it made was very encouraging but I ran out! 🤤 I'm writing this reply to you hoping you might be able to give me some advice on how to connect with a regular source of the medicine! Any information that might help would be appreciated. My daughter hasn't been able to get her hands on any more and I hate bothering her because she works long hours at her job. I'm not even sure how one would try to communicate with someone they're "meeting" via a KZbin video, but I see you have a channel so perhaps you know how. It is SO pathetic it's illegal to have access to a natural substance that is known to provide so much relief to people suffering from so many various ailments!? 😕

These guys need to appeal to the public. Fastest way is to begin might be some sort of Public Alternative Medical foundation. I wonder if his cancer treatment can be used as a preventative. I've had doctors pushing ex rays since my 20's. The latest one was last years. I even went so far as to go the set up an appointment for a CAT Scan at a Cancer Center, as advised by my doctor who I had gone to for a lung infection which needed 3 rounds of antibiotics... the infection had lasted for at least 7 months... so obviously they might think of cancer. Well my infection was still present when I had a regular Xray. So.... to a cancer clinic I went...thinking but, but I have an infection.... this makes no sense at this point...shouldn't we clear up the infection first? Makes sense to me. The result of the visit: that dr. wanted to do a biopsy as soon as possible.... he advised me he would do a biopsy first and then the Catscan. My gut said he is full of it .... and I'm being abused. I decided not to go through with any thing.... decided that if I had cancer so be it. If it is my time to go what will be will be. But, I do have pains in my under are, and all the area of a perfect bra fit... so maybe my bras have caused a problem. I would be great if I could get a hold of this Sententa & Turkey Tale. If it is cancer maybe I'd be cured. If it is not Cancer maybe it will work on whatever is causing to pains.

Wow this guy might be the smartest guy on the planet. 🤯🤯🤯. His articulation of his first "hero's journey" was the best story I have ever heard and it mirrors my experience with magic mushrooms. It blows me away that so many people articulate the same message of oneness and self enlightenment after dosing with these shrooms. Intelligent design? Absolutely but the architect is fungi.

I love Paul Stamets, his dream to save the world with mushrooms is amazing. But I hesitate when he changes them to be insecticides, especially ones that have such a far reaching effect and it can replicate itself.

Only 50 minutes in & 5 years late, I cannot help wondering if there is a fungus specific to eradicating yellow crazy ants? I heard fire and carpenter ants mentioned. There’s a huge risk to the environment here in parts of Australia and they are on the march south.

That was great! But sadly Paul is at odds with govt and corporations who want patents and monopoly power to rule and reign outside the reach of consequences. Just like the evil part of corporations is monopoly, the evil part of both unbridled capitalism and communism is that same monopoly power.

I think the mycopesticide hasn't been commercially successful because it's TOO effective. If improperly used, it could attract and kill bugs from a large area. The liability could be big if it wrecked agriculture or destroyed all the food for animals that eat insects.
