Can plants help people access the intelligence in nature-the “mind of nature”-that we must learn to understand in order to supersede our ecologically destructive habits? This panel features Jeffrey Bronfman, founding member of the União do Vegetal church of the United States; Paul Stamets, master mycologist; Katsi Cook, renowned Mohawk midwife and environmental activist. Hosted by J.P. Harpignies, Bioneers Associate Producer.
This panel took place at the 2014 Bioneers Annual Conference. Video shot and edited by Bjarni Thor Haraldsson.
Since 1990, Bioneers has acted as a fertile hub of social and scientific innovators with practical and visionary solutions for the world's most pressing environmental and social challenges.
To experience talks like this, please join us at the Bioneers National Conference each October, and regional Bioneers Resilient Community Network gatherings held nationwide throughout the year.

I am a woman of Nordic paganism. I cried when Katsi Cook spoke about her experience at about 40 minutes in, about a midwife experience. I have lost a child, and I also know more about spiritual being through my experiences. She hit on a missing spot within my belief system, one where the women have lost their ways to connect with one another in such a beautiful way. A healing way. I am grateful for this video, and the time she gave to make this possible, so that I may watch it now. Thank you all for your stories, however I'd love to thank Katsi for her story.

I started as a Wiccan, merged in with new age Paganism and I was still searching and seeking. Rejected by my pagan community and deemed as "too much" I found paganism was lacking in that unity of the women. Still in the so called "spiritual" community there was still bad negative things going on. I still had this nagging feeling of something more, something so much more getter then myself. Then NODAPL came and with a gut wrenching pain and knowing I knew that the connection to all the people who came together to fight for Indigenous rights was were my passion burned the brightest. The sacredness of this land is beyond words, it is so overwhelming that sometimes I can't breath. I am disabled but I do as much as I can with what I am blessed with. Still searching, still seeking the ceremonies, my teacher and the ways of how to heal myself and others. If anyone can help point me in the right direction for the teacher my heart longs for please message me. In Blessings and prayer.

@@buffy377 assuming you are European, it's important to recognize that you must connect with your own ancestral knowledge. You are an echo of their essence. What is lost can still be found, but only from within. The bad vibes you noticed in similar seekers was probably their failure to be authentic and earnest. Too often people are more concerned with having the appearance of wisdom than actually having it. They use it as social currency and signal their group status with clothing and empty rituals. Ironically, in searching for authenticity, white people end up appropriating the visuals and ideologies of other cultures instead of aligning with what's true to themselves. Don't emulate other people's mysticism. Regenerate your own. It will look similar because the source is universal, but the method of access must be genuine if it is to 🐻 🍑.

+TrueBlueSue49 You have good instincts. 'Western reductionism' has convinced most of us in so-called first world countries that humans are somehow separate from, and superior to, the natural world. Even the observations and words of the insightful have been twisted to support the notion that humans can- and should- fight against nature, dominate it, and this will make us more human (?!) and make our lives somehow better. ('Better living through chemistry.' Science will save us all- through nuclear energy... or whatever.) The real mystery is how in the world did humans ever become so thoroughly convinced that the very network of life that gave rise to our own life was somehow against us? Or that it would not contain *everything* we need to- not just survive- but to THRIVE? Don't we know that elephants thrive in their natural habitiat? Tigers in theirs. And whales in the (unpolluted, un-depleated, quiet) oceans? But somehow humans were not supposed to be able to thrive through natural interactions with their habitat? Stay True, Sue!

Psychedelics can be used both 'recreationally' or 'sacramentally' ('spiritually'). When young people start in the West, they often do it with friends and music, in clubs and at parties, and marvel at the somewhat more superficial aspects of the perceptive distortions. This is recreational use. A more sacramental use is when one takes the psychedelic alone, or possibly with a passive trip sitter, in silence and, often, in darkness or with a sleep mask and typically remains motionless; this method allows one to focus much more intently on the message, without visual, audible or tactile distractions. There are intelligent plants, and there are sacred, sacramental plants, plants with superior intelligence; just like in the animal kingdom with lower and higher orders.

this whole topic of fungi in all aspects of life on earth is so under reported. We seem to be absorbed in the machinations of politicians . This stuff it was we should be paying attention to. Good luck Paul Stamets

Amazing discussion. I discovered Paul Stamets from an video I saw earlier today. Glad I found this. All three of the presenters brought insight and a wealth of knowledge on the topic. Merlin Sheldrake (father is Rupert) has a book titled Entangled Life on fungi. I haven’t read it yet but have seen video conversations with him here on YT.

Hugely important information. These plants are very important to all the people. So much could be learned. But most of us who are seeing this, will never get to learn. Such a sad thing.

I just practiced ten minutes of Qigong after ingesting American Ginseng Root. I have found that practicing 3 foot stick out on my porch actually works better than the Qigong. I think it is because this practice moves Chi through the hands so well. Also, my specialized footwork is good for root. I want to learn Traditional Chinese Medicine so I can learn more about how Chi works. I've been practicing Silat and Escrima since 1993 and Taiji, Bagua and Xingyi since 2008. I like practicing slow twisting and circling steps with blades. It nourishes my brain and I circulate my chi to stay healthy and massage my internal organs to stay soft and limber. The first thing I would teach someone is how to relax and root and circulate Qi. After relaxing, someone can learn basic Gong Fu! Ginseng A river of life through eyes Seen blue skies and dream Each day’s scene A shade of green from the leaves Beautiful blossoms So many herbs Spirits Here you find a shining light So bright

The question at 1:05:00 - Maybe non-locality? We need quantum physicist, psychonauts, first nation's people, mycologists and so on, to come together to create a network for action. Does this exist yet?

Its moments like this where i like to remind people that we are not parasites on our earth and we are not a burden to her. However we were made or evolved, Whatever we learned along the way, Someone, somewhere took a wrong turn and made it so we do everything the wrong way. The earth has given us all the resources to live the comfortable lives we do, but we just needed to do things naturally. We need to find that moment in history that we started doing the wrong things and when we let tyrants blind us with honeyed words and a promise of better health for the greater good only to stab us in the back and we always fall for it, and write it all off as history and finally learn from it. We need a better more natural future. We need the masses to not be so disconnected from nature. We need to be children of our planet again.

I can empathize with the bag of mushrooms , my first experience with the liberty cap in england. I had collected 139 of them. when i asked the experienced person how many i needed to take, they asked me how many i had. I told them 139 and they said that might be enough. so I ate them all. oh boy, it seemed like i could know what people standing behind me were thinking, amongst other experiences. I dont think i will be doing them again. I too avoid charismatic Christians, i personally think they didnt hear the lunch bell ring. .

Avoiding charismatic Christians could be and likely is rooted in doubt/shame in ones self. 139 toxic mushrooms will get you every time, that's for sure. Just know that "Christian" means follower of Christ and Christ was NOT sent to condemn but to redeem.

What they speak of in oneness of all.. I feel that and live in that always. And I actually didn’t need plant medicine to do it. After I had my experience, I even tried mushrooms and it did nothing at all. I am always there. I can teach it to anyone who can pay attention and be disciplined. Nothing against the medicines. Those are fine, just be thankful and conscious of them. Not to go too far into it, I do have a lot to teach and I must offer it. No one ever takes me serious. I have so much to offer people but no one willing to listen. I think all of these individuals are contributions to humanity. I just need to point out that I can add more understanding and clarification to all the topics that they speak about. It’s what I reach out with everyday and I have for 5 years now. Is there anyone out there I can talk with? It will change your life for the best. God bless!

I have been up all night listening to the deep dark recesses of this thing we call the internet in one night I have learned of trepenation as crazy as that shit seems IMO I have learned of the wonder of ultraLSD and a ton of other Hamilton’s pharmacopoeia stuff and then I looked behind that and realized I was trying to live my life through other people and learn from thier experiences because I was scared to do it myself when In reality I knew all along that the only way to learn was to live my own life and have my own experiences and learn from my own mistakes and more importantly I learned that the fear of me (goin out and doing these things) and the fear and dread of what if it doesn’t work out what if I make a mistake by taking a chance and I fail, all the fear that had been holding me back for so long suddenly flipped into resentment and deep emotion of fear of (what if I don’t) it instantly became tenfold more scary to think about what if I didn’t ever go exploring the world what if instead I stay here and do nothing out of fear and I never learn anything meaningful or worthwhile the thought of not doing it for myself was so scary to me that I learned how to use the very same emotions that were holding me back as fuel to move forward I cannot explain my experience in words only the vividly clear message it ingrained on me now and I hope forever ✌🏻
