So i remember it's a beautiful day out, blue skies, and hear the song "I'll be you" for the first time ever in my car on the radio driving to work at Winn Dixie...I'll never forget...it was a Friday morning in about 1989...and Bryan Adams hadn't put an album out since about 1987 with his "into the fire" record and I was anxiously waiting for something new because I was such a big fan...and here I am... I'm driving down the road all excited listening to this song thinking this sounds like Bryan Adams!!??? thinking is this a new single out promoting his new album mabey!? and then the song ended and the DJ says ...an awesome guitar driven new tune from The Replacements! I thought, never heard of them but I'm seriously hooked! went to Camelot music in the Ocala Florida paddock mall and bought the cassette that night after work, the name of the album was " Don't tell a soul" ....it's 2018 almost and I still have that same cassette tape and it still plays after being on auto play in my 87 Mercury Cougars cassette deck for months solid....lol....I wanna go back....best days of my life.

@Gralin James Pritchard I don’t know, I remember herring every one and there mom pay homage to the Ramons and the phixies . I don’t mind the pixies , but I often feel that huskerdu and the replacements , not tho mention black flag, have been over shadowed by mediocre bands such as the prizes and the Ramons ( The Ramons is one of the most annoying band’s in history I might add )

I love Paul. Great record. The bridge to his solo work I suppose. Doesn't have the high points of Tim or Pleased to meet me, but the most consistent record he ever did in my opinion.

Never thought of it that way before but I think you're right. It's the most cohesive 'Mats album because there's a consistent "narrative" (feeling and texture) running through it, whereas the other 'Mats albums are a total grab bag. I mean, my favourite 'Mats album is "Pleased to Meet Me", which has "I.O.U" alongside "Nightclub Jitters" and "Skyway" - I love the scattershot feel of it. But I get why someone might think All Shook Down is Paul's best work.

So glad I found this Channel and now I am a subscriber... the only time I got to see them was on the last tour All Shook down in San Francisco I had friends in the industry got on the list was told I was going backstage for the after-party but things went so bad so quick when it was time to go my friend said are you ready and I said I don't think Paul Westerberg needs to meet me tonight... he shrugged we went outside and as we were leaving the Warfield we ran into Jello Biafra, on his 10 speed of course... typical San Francisco night

Their last two albums speak to how much of an edge Bob Stinson gave the band. While Paul wrote the songs in the band, Bob's edge was contagious in the music.

I got into them with all the albums already 20+ years old (thanks to my dad) and I think that makes me more open to different kinds of their music. Merry Go Round was one of the first songs of theirs I really fell in love with, so I feel my perspective made me love their more mellow stuff just as much as the rest. Probably could’ve worded that better, but anyone could word anything better, when I think about it.

@@aisle_of_view They say the best songwriters are either complete geniuses or very clever thieves. Westerberg always admitted he was the latter; "if you steal from everybody, nobody can put a finger on you". I guess the problem with MGR is he didn't steal enough! (FWIW my favourite example of Westerberg lifting something is "The Ledge" - the riff is an upside-down version of "Don't Fear the Reaper", which is very appropriate considering the subject matter).

@@rdrrr I don't think he stole that much. If you want some stars who steal, look no farther than 25 songs by Led Zep and 25 more by Bob Dylan. Dylan stole just melodies, but that was a folk thing. Also, ,I have no idea what Paul is talking about. Usually he's more enlightening.
