This is a re-upload of an interview with former Replacements frontman Paul Westerberg interviewed by fellow musician Peter Wolf in January of 2016. Most of the questions regard his then-new collaborative album 'Wild Stab' with Juliana Hatfield under the name 'The I Don't Cares' which, by the way, is a fantastic album and went severely overlooked. This video is notable in the fact that it's Westerberg's last public interview before going on an unannounced hiatus that he is currently still in. It was deleted off it's original channel but was thankfully salvaged from Westerberg's fan forum 'Man Without Ties' which you can find here - paulwesterberg...
3:25 : How did the collaboration come about?
8:37 : Bringing Sammy Davis Jr. alive
12:54 : Dissecting I Don’t Cares songs, and writing for Juliana Hatfield
16:35 : Let the music do the talking
19:22 : “There’s a certain mystery that sits with this [LP]”
23:27 : Songs from Paul Westerberg’s basement
28:00 : How old Replacements demos became I Don’t Cares songs
31:38 : Westerberg’s first record bought, first concert attended
35:45 : Westerberg’s first guitars, and when music started paying the rent
40:03 : Coming off the Replacements’ reunion tour
43:43 : Hey Peter, what about Magic Dick?
47:10 : Singers in the band are the craziest
50:26 : Let’s get a refill
51:00 : “We teased ourselves… we’re not making a record”
53:35 : Life after the Replacements reunion
56:30 : Where is Juliana?
59:56 : Taking the I Don’t Cares on the road

Paul listlessly says 'disconnected but not disenchanted' when Peter is talking about musicians caring. I heard him say, when asked about sharing an elevator with Cobaine 'I was dying to get out of there and he was dying to die'. The man speaks in lyrics.

Glad this is up again. Westerberg is a great interview when the questions aren’t looking into same old topics. He is always fighting boredom it seems and Peter is enough of a legend himself to keep it really interesting. Thanks for posting this.

Paul’s lyrics and songwriting chops are enviable; amidst the barnburning rockers, he came to perfect the ragged, sweet gutter poet ballad like few others before or since…

Paul not getting interviewed but having a conversation about commonality by a guy who knows what he’s talking about rather than a dime a dozen phony mtv rock “writer” is a breath of fresh air , you get to feel what paul means because he’s not just answering ubiquitous rote questions from the same old script

Man, Westerberg is such a great interview. He talks more like an author or a playwrite than a musician.

Paul only says the words that have to be said, it's an economy of language. You get the sweet with the unsavory in about the sparest most potent way. Love ya Paul.

Paul looks a bit uncomfortable , but not as uncomfortable as when blazing drunk 6'4" 280 lb me ran into him in a stairwell at The Chance in Po' town and demanded that he and the rest of the band change their accommodation plans for that evening , and stay at my house. His horrified look gave me the impression -I didnt color him impressed.

PW is no question the greatest songwriter of his generation. Elvis Costello wishes he had his talent. But, sadly, the record they're talking about is just painful. The songs, for the most part, are weak. And the two of them have zero chemistry. Their voices together basically just suck . Jarringly horrible.

Hard disagree. Sounds like fully worked out versions of Paul's basement demos which are personally right up mine and many other Mats fans' alleys. Not sure if I'm a fan of the spontaneity Spotify gives to people to decide if they like a certain type of music or not. It doesn't encourage the listener to take in everything the music has to offer on a wider scale since everything they already like is listenable within seconds at the press of a button.
