Oh goodness, my Grandmother was a purist. Absolutely no almond extract. Granddaddy would pour coffee in his saucer and put a tea cake on it to soak. The recipe had disappeared for years; I was visiting a great Aunt and she had it written on the back of an envelope. What a joyful day! I made them for my Daddy right away 😋

My Mother searched her entire life for tea cakes like her mother made. She passed away at the age 90, but her mom passed away very young leaving Mother the oldest of five other siblings. Wish Mother had been able check out your recipe to see if IT is the one.

My family has an old tea cake recipe, too. It’s a little different than this recipe. It has nutmeg in it which makes them taste like Fall to me. So good! I have to add that my mom always rolled out the dough and just took a knife and cut the cookies into free form rectangles, because her grandmother had done it that way. So I do too.
