Tasker was designed to automate almost anything the phone can do by itself. This shows how powerful that can be when it's paired with other automation devices, like Alexa. The Home Assistant companion app is nice for controlling things the same way as you do on any other dashboard, but you're right, it lacks the other functionality the Tasker has, such as opening URLS and other apps. I also appreciate seeing all the examples of getting things that normally don't play well with each other actually do so. Thanks.

A Tasker idea for you Paul, attatching your phone to a wireless charger in the car turns on Bluetooth (to connect to the car), WiFi off, hot spot on (kiddo conectivity), opens Waze, adjusts brightness and volume. Taking it off reverts it to 'home' mode, if it can then connect to the home WiFi (queuing a 'welcome home master' Alexa announcement when the door opens) or saves your GPS coordinates so you know where you've parked the car.

If you’re concerned about the permissions you gave Tasker or your phone’s battery usage, you can set it up on a virtual Android device and log in to WhatsApp on it as an additional device. Then, you can grant all the necessary permissions to Tasker there (including the features that require root access). This should also work on any extra Android phones you have lying around. Just make sure to cap the charging or remove the battery if you’re going to leave it on a charger 24/7, or use a smart plug with a routine to charge it occasionally so the battery doesn’t swell up.
@Stephen-Jones

To make the timer "easily" in Home Assistant, use a Wled controlled lightstrip. Wled has the function for this.. though you need a little YAML code. Quite easy with a video tutorial imho.

A tasker tutorial would be great, I've had it years and not really used it. Your security light idea is a good one, I have done this for years, as long as I have had hoooome assistant. After midnight my outdoor sensors only turn inside lights on, an idea created by my cat. My security lights only come on at night if we are going from the inside to out, or if one of us is arriving home 😊

Some good stuff in there. I'm curious to know if you were at the mall and got a message from Neesha whether it would play the message in the house 😊 but I guess you could easily add a check to see if you're home or not. My Alexa and FireTV talk quite nicely and you can ask Alexa to fire up Netflix and watch a particular show. Not sure if it can do the last thing you were watching though. I have a routine called curtain alarm which can open the curtains at a particular time in the morning and say "you told me to wake you up at Xam". After watching this, I'm thinking to be able to say "set curtain alarm for Xam" by voice would be a nice thing to add.

This is what I love and hate about Home Assistant. It can do so many things, but finding an alternate integration to use with a certain device to talk to it in a different way is amazing. And when you find this answer it is a complete Eureka moment!!! But it usually involves in mend bending settings and finding you missed a step or two and spend hours until it just works!!!

Some great ideas here and I'll be that guy and say Home Assistant can do most if not all of this (although I'm certainly not saying don't do it on Tasker). On the WhatsApp messages, HA will tell me who has sent it but ask if I want to hear it. If I answer yes, it reads it out (also works for Signal, Google Chat and Sky News push alerts). What I'm going to steal though is in focus mode silence them all bar ones from the domestic manager. Happy New Year Paul and family.

I'd like more details on how you got HA to make Alexa do things. I'm sure when you know how to do it, it's simple, but I've been struggling for a while to figure out how to have Home Assistant talk, either through a Sonos speaker, or an Alexa speaker, or a Google Home speaker. I am also certain that when I've been able to do so successfully once, I'll be able to repeat the process as often as I'd like. It's just getting that first time making Home Assistant speak... Happy Twixmas. Thanks for another great video. One thing I've done recently was step away from the HACS Alexa Media Player integration after it completely screwed my HA instance (the memory leak issue). To work around this, I configure a Helper, expose it to Alexa, and then build the automation natively as Routine, so nothing too mental but works perfectly for me.
