I'll admit I was enamored of that lifestyle when I was a kid. I was even booking in high school. I then met a guy who worked for my family. He was a made guy in NYC and a main conduit to Mad Dog Sullivan. Did time with Gotti and Joe Gallo (who he swore was gay or bisexual and he's not the first I've heard that from... not that it matters... just an interesting tidbit). I liked him a lot. We got a long well. He was 5'2, 60 something but fearless, but his life was very sad. He had no real family to speak of, but a nephew he adored. No money. Not much social security because he worked off the books. He was forced to work a physically taxing job with really bad COPD and emphysema late in his life. He died some years later, and the funeral was not well-attended. It was a first glimpse into the grim reality of that lifestyle. This is a guy who got out of it, and he still had basically nothing to show for it.

Tony Sirico was from Brooklyn and still maintained his NY license. As any New Yorker knows the New York State DMV also holds the court rooms if you get a moving violation. Legend has it that cops that write tickets and go there to testify, when they would see him they would snatch him up and bring him back to their precinct and he would spend the day joking with them, taking pictures, signing autographs…That is a class act! I’m still heartbroken over Mr. Sirico’s loss. Hands down, he played my favorite character on the entire series. I’d seen him in an interview at one of those Sopranos ‘cons’ or whatever they call them, and he didn’t look well; the interviewer was gracious and understanding of his frailty speaking with him. I’m just so grateful we all have a chance to watch his thespian talents for years to come. God bless always, Mr. Sirico.

Once again, Mr Franzese, thank you so much for this warm tribute to Tony Sirico. He was a gem indeed. My favourite scene of Sirico is of the Goodfellas, when at the beginning of the movie he got of the car at Paulie's pizzaria, looking amazing, with Tony Bennett singing Rags to Riches in the background.. What an iconic scene. Sad to see him go. My condolences to his family.
