"I didn't come over here to change the Philippines, I came over here for the Philippines to change me." This is pure wisdom. This is how an expat needs to view another culture to even begin to understand it.

It is not $600 in and of itself! It is $600 in relation/pro-rata to Mae's income and her frugalness and diligence to save and support herself and her siblings. That $600 represents is a small fortune to someone earning what Mae was making. 100% kudos to her.

Nice overview of your last five years in the Philippines. I’m an American living in Taiwan for about the last 18 years. Freshly single, retired and considering an exploratory trip to the Philippines. I love getting different perspectives on the Philippines, both of the great aspects and some of the possible not so great ones. Keep Baby Mae happy, the way you talk about her she seems like the best part of your Philippines experience. God bless the both of you! I hope to find someone that has that type of commitment to the spiritual aspect of life and has that natural type of joy and happiness.

This was really inspiring to me especially hearing about baby May and her safe. I have been really upset and depressed because I am currently out of work for medical reasons I’m also disabled and receive Social Security and at the end of the month I’m broke totally I have nothing left and I’m behind on bills and honestly I don’t think I’ve ever had that happen to me before I haven’t been able to save any money and I’m completely ashamed because I should be now to be really honest I’ve actually been helping a friend and that’s probably where my extra goes but I’m still a here’s this woman making $80 a month and she’s able to actually save money and here I am making way more than that and I have nothing so oh I’m really glad I still hold upon this video it’s it’s really kind of giving me the push I need so to speak I don’t know what the I don’t know what really to say but I am very optimistic now that I can actually save some money I just need to be more conscientious about it I need to stop feeling sorry for myself and deal with it and she is amazing she really is amazing

Happy 5th Anniversary Paul - Thank you for sharing your viewpoints with us! The section at around 13:10 where you mention: "I didn't need to please anybody, I didn't need to answer to anybody... I didn't need to show up for anybody..." is a fantastic epiphany. I'm sitting here mesmerized listening to your 5 year recap as it somehow speaks to me down deep. I'm remembering things I've not thought about for a long time. Now, unlike you, I'm still here in the USA dealing with all that stuff you left behind, but maybe....there's still a chance for me to start making small changes to my thinking that can grow over time. Listening to you, I know that is something I would like to have happen! I know you mentioned that it may sound selfish, but I think of it as...You've put down those burdens in life that you no longer need to carry, nor do you need to let them define you. Here in the US, we keep running to the next big thing... the next big purchase...keeping up with the joneses.. etc. But in the end, we all pass from this life almost exactly the way we came in... with nothing other than our bodies. Not to be morbid here, but I think it's wonderful that you are able to enjoy your retirement and enjoy your time. I thank you for allowing me to live a little vicariously through you!

I really loved earlier on Paul the video you both made about Baby Mae's job in Manila and to where she is now so I really like the fact she has lots more time on her hands to relax and we all can see that she once was more of an introvert but with your help a real extrovert now. Hey Paul my dear friend, thank you so much for this video. I have had that same philosophy of letting the philippines change me. Since moving here almost 2 months ago, I am feeling more and more liberated each and everyday. My fiancee is so awesome and she always looking out for my well being. I'm still feeling my way around everything, but in my opinion, moving here to the Philippines has really took a lot of bullshit stress away from my life. And I too have a savings that I call a "OH SHIT FUND" My fiancee is all about saving money. But i'm going to take her island hopping all over the Philippines. I am so happy that you and Baby Mae are together, I think that you two were made to be together. You know when someone is truly for you. How can you tell? you can't, it just something that connects you two together. Thank you Paul my dear friend for sharing this awesome video, Please stay safe and healthy, and God bless you, Baby Mae, Riza, Jennifer, and the rest of your beautiful Family. Baby Mae has definitely come a long way. And congrats on her having 14,000 subscribers. I have nothing but love and respect for you and the beautiful Baby Mae.

Congratulations on your journey, Paul. If you'd made it through the first year, then the tough part is over. Hey Paul. I'm a Brit in Thailand. Been here 23 years. 2 years off, just returned. Because I'm over 50, I'm considered retired in Thailand, which makes it much easier to get one year visas. Got to have money in the bank though, of course. In England, you got to keep going until 67yo. It sucks. Just because some other people are managing to live longer, they raise the retirement age. If those people won the lottery, they wouldn't give me a share so why punish me for them not dying. Anyway, I've got nine years to go. Fortunately I've got a bit of savings so can I can quit all that and stay here in Thailand. Regarding that John bloke that you "adopted". You're flogging a dead horse. I saw it from the start. He does what he does and you can't alter it. That money you have given him should've gone to your wife's family. If they don't need it then I'm sure they know a neighbour or two that does. Just my outlook. Cheers Paul. Oh, about me, well in the old days I was a huge fan of one night stands. Always paid family support in the morning. Perfect for all concerned. Thailand is for me. Followed by Pillipines and Bali. But in Bali you gotta get the "F" out of the tourist area and go into the real Bali. I had 6 months of great fun in Phillipines but only Manila and Angeles. I'm just an older "chill out" guy now. I enjoy your vids. Good to see you there in a different part of the same part of the world as me. Cheers Paul.

Hi Paul, I have been here in Luzon for about 15 days and you are correct in saying that it is a big culture shock. I see people busting their butts to survive and those just sitting wasting away. Driving has been a challenge and my BMX and years of street riding have been put to the test. This is my first recon mission here for a month and I truly can't judge so far as I haven't seen enough places to make any decisions. I know I like it closer to the ocean as the air seems cleaner, here in the province I have to deal with various types of pollution that keep me constantly coughing and I don't smoke. The woman I came to see is nice but she is a bit misguided in her thinking as I have repeatedly told her my plan for my retirement which doesn't include living with her family. She actually thought I was going to build a house and everyone was moving in lol 😆, hilarious. The cost of living is allot cheaper here and true if you watch your money you can put a bunch away. I plan on leaving about a quarter of my retirement in the states and put it in a Shwab investment account that I can start drawing from when I hit seventy or so depending on what the government requires at that point in time. So that's the plan and it looks like subic bay or north of that will be my next place to look , La Union looks promising as Bagio is just up the hill . Thanks for the video

I think what I like most about your videos is how you can reflect and laugh at both the good and bad you have gone through, remain humble and respectful to those around you, and your respectful relationship with Mae - and how you take her struggles into consideration. Just an overall great attitude to life's ups and downs and going with the flow 🙂 Keep the videos coming! Hope to meet you in the next few years when I eventually make it over there. Also have Filipino family over there via a marriage of my Son to a woman from the Philippines (who also is a great source to screen what is true in expat videos and what is questionable - your content she says is pretty much spot on)
