Great tips. My mental stumbling block is always leaving the car somewhere safe. Daft as it sounds I never thought of using street view to check ahead. D'oh - everyday's a school day.

Excellent video. I learned a lot. As an OAP, I started backpacking before the internet. My technique for finding wild pitches and ridges which might offer scrambling was to pore over the OS maps. I feel it helped me with my navigation skills by helping me link topography with its map representation so possibly still worth doing.

thanks mate, you really brought me a huge step forward. I'm planning to hike and wildcamp since 2 years. It didn't work out for private reasons till now but I was always dreaming and researching the topic in the meantime. Especially finding routes in a highly inhabitited area was really difficult for me. But with your posibility of looking up the images on gmaps really opened me a new way of thinking. thanks for that hint. you made a lot of my days.

Great video Paul, just the tutorial I was looking for. I am 62 now and you have inspired me to think about wild camping. Just for information, you can turn the magic os map from black and white to colour by clicking the os colour map check box on the left hand side.

Useful video, thanks. It shouldn't be forgotten that there are many great wild camping locations that can be reached by train/bus removing the complication of having to find somewhere to park up (and having to drive home afterwards, possibly tired).

The Google maps tips, especially re' parking are pure genius. With somewhere new, I normally look at my OS map and just turn upand hope for the best. It isn't ideal as there is always a nagging doubt at the back of my mind that I'm going to have issues. I'm a bit of a muppet with technology so I'll do some practising! Best wishes, Chris.

Great watch, very informative ! I've had my Med cruise in April cancelled, a family week in Ibiza in May gone, summer 2 weeks in Tenerife July gone. I live in Newcastle and normally spend 2-3 weekends in Keswick (B&B) a year, but I used to camp back in the day. I have a motorbike so parking not so secure, but you've inspired to spend my summer 2 weeks either in the Lakes (crowded in July and more so this year) or Northumberland (probably crowded this year too) 'Go outdoors' is 0.3 miles away. Thanks for sharing !

Hi Paul! Great videos thanks for sharing. After using various web pages over the last few years, I have found out that bing maps provide OS maps for free (1:25k and 1:50k). Besides free mapping for the garmin, I have found this useful swapping between OS, road and aerial maps.

A quick question if you don't mind. Assuming it's still available, what is the name of the website that shows on the left side of the screen an Ordnance Survey type map and on the right the satellite image of the exact same place, giving you the ability to look for and then mark a suitable route. I used it several years ago but after watching your channel and some others too I have decided to go backpacking again with the kids (I suppose no longer kids) Our last trip was Crinkle Crags, Bowfell, camp at Angle Tarn, then back to the car parked at Great Langdale campsite. Regards from Whitley Bay

Great video , very informative. Just have a question as in other videos you say that you try and not arrive to early at your chosen camp site . So when do you try to arrive or set off from home . Let’s say you have a 1 1/2 hour drive from your house and a walk up to Hallin fell to the camp site , what would be your timings for the trip ?
