The value of a 2 person tent for a single occupant is totally priceless. I did 2 months in summer in one and now switched back to a one person for a week on Hadrians wall, OMG what a failure, could hardly move in the damn thing.

Recently spent the night in freezing conditions after a hard day. The equipment was warm, but the tired body did not produce heat. Chemical heaters saved me. I highly recommend it. I used them for the first time.

Hadn’t thought of using a wheelie bin to go camping. Solid bit of kit though in a storm you’re going to be well snug. Especially if you’re vertically challenged anyway. Good Shout.

An old fasioned hot water bottle works fine , not the lightest piece of kit, but can keep you warm all night if wrapped in a spare jumper or tee shirt. And the warm sleep it gives is well worth those extra ounces. If you have wind pants, wear them over whatever else you are wearing as they add another layer of warm air around your lower half which helps to keep your feet warm. Wind shirt , same. Two lightweight sythetic sleeping bags, synthetic because Britwinter is reliably wet and tents are not always as weather resistant as we would like, one to sleep in and the other draped loosely over like a quilt. This allows freedom of movement while maintaining warmth. Lastly ,long woolen socks wooly mitts and balaclava, and the chances of a good nights sleep are pretty good.

Got the Hilleberg Hilton ready to rumble. Great sunset. Pic quality is looking great. Nice balance. I have a Staika. It was my first Hilleberg. Little taller but still a strong roomy place. Better get you a face mask. Running bald faced will get you chapped up fast. A warm extra set of down footies, loose wool socks down puffy and a really good loose wool cap. wool undies top bottom. You can run out and back without freezing to death when the bottle gets full. Sunset and rize were epic. Like it never happened before . All good from east KY USA Next time

Now that's some hiking mate, a pork pie chef. Those looked delicious. Complementary to the surroundings, remarkable eroded stones there, beautiful. A bit otherworldly. (If you ever want to heat some pie in a pan, bring extra alu foil, 2 layers, just slightly bigger than the pan. Crumble the 1st layer of alu foil just a bit, so you get a waffle effect, so the pie doesn't touch the pan directly. Cover the pan with 2nd foil sheet for heat retention; voila.) Trying to gear up for my first ever true winter (preferably snowy) hike. Got the right tent and 80-90% gear but need the extra bits and bobs, micro-spikestrail crampons, snow stakes, 5-10C. liner for my 3-season -4C. bag, an extra 1.7R foldable foam mattress to get at 5R, an extra pair of merino base layers, extra wind and waterproof mittens. Haven't got the money for a new winter mattress+winter sleeping bag+true winter down jacket. An extra lambswool sweater and a fleece will have to do.

I’ve noticed that many hikers and campers on KZbin these days focus too much on their gear rather than sharing the actual experience of camping, hiking, or traveling to different places. Most of their content involves short walks, setting up tents, and sipping coffee while explaining the items they purchased-almost like advertisers promoting products for their content. While that can be interesting, it would also be great to hear more about their personal experiences during the trek, challenges, things to avoid, any background stories about the places they visit, the routes they took, and how it all made them feel.

Drinking from streams. Ask anyone in Africa who has seen there kids die from dehydration due to dirty water and maybe they have lost 2 or 3 children from dirty water. Picking up a bug from water that’s not treated can mean nothing at all to you ever, some slight raging squirts or severe dehydration. Luckily we have a NHs for the severe end of the problem. Never having a problem in the past doesn’t mean you won’t in the future. Minimum should be boiled probably filtered maybe UV too as a must and avoid rivers in any populated areas or industrial locations.

Cracking weather but looks baltic 😂 I'm trying to motivate myself for a cold wild camp this month 😁 Re sleeping bag warmth and clothing: I don't know if it's widely known but the criteria for the tests on which the temperature ratings are given are ... A 4.8 R value mat. A heated mannequin wearing a hat, long sleeved top, long legged bottoms and knee high socks. Anything less will lead to an underperforming bag.

Look, man, I love your videos, however, I would really like to see one of the bigger brands you use sponsor you to take a trip outside the Lake District and other near-identical parts of the UK... I get that times are tough at the moment, but when you see guys like Harmen Hoek with only 27 videos from three years of content creation on KZbin with a quarter of a million subscribers, it becomes obvious that people want to see locational variety... Now, I don't think anybody expects you to traverse the planet like he does and set up the kind of shots he does, but Paul, please mate, get out of the UK for a couple of videos every now and then. Your skills are absolutely transferable to Sweden, for example... If a silly 40yo guy like me from Melbourne Australia can get over to Scandinavia for a camp (with winter camping gear, might I add) surely you can, too...
@PaulMessner
@PaulMessner Ай бұрын
I’d love to be able to do that but finances just don’t allow it. Here It’s not like in the US where the KZbinrs are getting big sponsorship deals. Some brands will kindly donate gear from time to time but that’s it. I guess I’m not their market. My Scotland trip this year barely broke even for me and the view counts just aren’t the same now. I have some really great loyal subscribers but if the 190k showed up every video then maybe I could travel further afield. That said. I’m happy with what I do now but I agree it’s all very similar

@@PaulMessner Well, I’m not sure how much your Scotland trip cost, but a return flight from Manchester to Kiruna, Sweden, is only £166-or £187 return from Heathrow. Landing in Kiruna gives you easy access to Muddus National Park, just south nearby Gällivare, offering a stunning and diverse landscape compared to Scotland’s beautiful but treeless expanses. It’s a fantastic opportunity for a wider variety of shots and a new environment to challenge yourself. You don’t need sponsorships from big brands to explore within Europe! And you will highly appreciate Sweden's 'Allemansrätten', which translates to "everyman's right", which gives Swedish residents and visitors the right to roam and camp almost anywhere in Sweden's nature, so long as they abide by the 'leave no trace' ethos.

26 minutes of my life I won't get back. What exactly have you changed? Seems like you're going out for the first time wild camp. What's with the lights too, surely that'll attract attention and give other wild campers a bad name to be so damn braising. Sadly you're not tucked away and staying warm out in the open is silly imo, get to the trees, cover, wind chill. Glad you're getting out, but struggling to see what the title and thumbnail had to offer here because it seems like a lot of waffle, food and a little sunset. Sorry, but not your best video.

@@PaulMessner Judging by the name of the commenter it was probably a bot so I wouldn't pay it any mind.. and "Cheers for the feedback" sums it up perfectly. Beautiful terrain and glorious sunset, well worth the trip up there by the look of it.
