J M2064 Well no, her personality and her loving family are the only reasons I needed, absolutely not anything to do with finances or housing. She suffered a tragedy in her family shortly after we got married and she threw herself into religion to cope. I can’t have a reasonable conversation with her about religion and it’s contradictory premises. Therefore, I’m stuck with an extremely gullible but otherwise great spouse.

I went to church during basic training because it got me out of work on Sunday for a few hours. I kept up the habit for quite a while, despite always being an atheist. I found that a great many people going to church didn't appear to me to actually be believers, despite saying they were. I found many women went because of social pressures. My mother fit into this category. She thought we would look bad if we didn't go. That mattered to her. Many husbands only went because their wife dragged them there. Anyone who wanted to move up in the military knew that going to church definitely helped, so they usually went. I also found that local business people would go to network and promote their business. At that time, many young people went because it was a way to meet other young people. I was always wishing that I could find a way to tell who REALLY believed.

On the paying attention to evidence matter (23 min in) I'll just note that I am directly measuring how much of the data field antievolutionists (not just YECers) pay attention to. Overall they're only tripping into 10% of the relevant data field. So in principle antievolutionists cannot work out a viable competing model, since competing models would need to account for all the data the prevailing ones do.
@Dizzinator21146 жыл бұрын
James Downard exactly! I was telling my wife this the other day. I said it's one thing to say you don't understand evolution and you believe god created everything the way it is, but I ask how is that you explain all the evidence according to your world view? Are you postulating there's no evidence and that for decades people have just been making it up? She just said those things don't matter to me, and I said, but you should when you are saying you're worried about heaven and god you should want to know if your faith is misguided.

Where one of the books in religion class was like "If you're saying you're openminded and don't commit to being a catholic, and think all religions might be true, you're actually not being openminded because you're closing your eyes to the TRUTH!! Far better to commit to catholisism, and only convert to another religion if that one ends up being true, because-blah blah, basically pascal's wager" And even as a VERY devout teen, that left me with a question mark over my head going "Wait, how is choosing to believe ONE religion more openminded than not choosing any and trying to see which one is the most true???" XD

I thought Ken Ham was telling a joke at the beginning. " A group of catholic nuns, Muslims from Baghdad & Orthodox Jews walk into a fake boat........" Good for you, getting Matt Dilahunty is awesome. This big ass 'arc' all around him & MD is looking at the woodwork, that is awesome. Great video

OK, right now, I'm still a Christian, just so you know. The problem I have with fundies is that they say, "We have a record from someone who was there at the beginning of time." They don't stop to think that that is totally false. God did not write the Bible, people did. And then they come up with this whole inerrancy thing, and I bring up the point that there were more writings than just the 66 books that Protestants have. What if God wanted us to have more books? Is it still inerrant then? They don't think about these things

I'm doing a bible series soon talking about more of these things. I hope you'll stick around to watch.

Yes! I'm leaning more and more toward atheism (a lot of it has to do with the fundies; they're hurting their own cause), but I' not there yet. I love shit like this!
@kendallchaos6 жыл бұрын
Lisa For Truth I will say this, don’t become an atheist just because people like ham ruin stuff, I personally don’t believe in god for personal reasons but I have heard very compelling arguments for A god (just not the god of the Bible) if anything admit agnosticism over atheism
@LisaForTruth6 жыл бұрын
Kendall-It's not ALL the fundies; for years, I've been reading the Bible as allegory, but now I'm questioning the wisdom in that. And, I have questions like, "Why didn't god just wipe out wicked mankind instead of flooding everything?" (which never happened.) So, fear not, it won't be JUST because of the fundies
@sweatyeti6 жыл бұрын
Since you've given yourself permission to question what you're reading in the Bible, I'd say that's a good step towards realizing how odd it is at face value; and indeed, you might be on your way to being an atheist. I admire your courage in being willing to doubt what you believe, because it can feel scary or embarrassing to examine deeply held beliefs and reevaluate your reasoning. What are the reasons you still identify as a Christian? Do you like the idea of the existence of God and an afterlife? Or, perhaps there's a risk of ostracizing yourself from your family and community? No pressure to answer -- I'm just curious.

That end bit about prayer was interesting for me. I am trying to get a job right now after having graduated. I left the church about four years ago now, but yet I found myself recently yearning to pray when nervous about a job interview. It was a built in response to fear and worry that I cannot control. I can do my best in the job interview, but there is no way for me to actually control the decision of the hiring manager. When something is outside of your control (like getting rescued from a cave-in) it would feel better if there was some higher power that would favor you in such instances. Of course, I don't really believe there is such a higher power so I just end up feeling a bit ridiculous because I'll be rolling my eyes when I hear my parents say, "We're praying for you."
