KPH and KFS transmitters spring to life for Night of Nights XX July 12, 2019

Night of Nights XX is underway! 1940's PW 15 transmitter, RCA K and L sets from the 50's, RCA H-set from the late 50's/early 60's doing what they were born to do.

The RCA RC3 receivers were used at the former VOA C plant-were used to receive broadcasts from other countries and sent to VOA Wash DC plant for the language producers to use. The broadcasts were accessed thru the house Monitron dial up monitors, the transmitters you show here are like the commercial med wave 5 and 10kw H series. Used both and worked on them. Figure these are the SW versions. Good tour of this plant. I used to tune the receivers and send their signals to DC.

Now there is a transmitter site! The first station I worked at had a AM broadcast band version of the RCAs with the sliding doors. Made things easy to reach. The thyratrons not only worked as rectifiers but also voltage regulators making power adjustments easy without messing with the tuning.

Nathan: The "L sets" are the exact same rigs as the 10 KW AM rigs with the modulator section bypassed and components removed. We have them throttled back to 5 KW each because that is the TPO at which we are licensed to operate.
