Wow... YOU Sir Just saved me a world of frustration! Always HATED doing crown. Dreaded it in fact. It’s one of those rare projects DIY’’ers may only do once or twice in a lifetime and it is way too confusing trying to figure out the compound cuts when you lay the crown flat on a miter. And when it’s something a person like me doesn’t do enough to “just know” , figuring it out becomes a monumental PAIN IN THE ASS! with lots of mistakes and wasted material. Thanks! Excellent video!!!
@martimasters7704 Жыл бұрын
If you write down beforehands the angle of the saw tilt and the angle on deck left or right, then you won't screw it up because the wood is always laid flat. It's also helpful to note if the waste (the part of the board you don't keep) falls to the left or right of the saw blade. The only thing I don't like about compound mitre saws is that you must make a jig for short cutrs, because the tilt of the saw just makes it too damn dangerous to hold the wood and clamping isn't always an option. Personally, I find tilting the trim against the fence and cuting down straight on a non-compound mitre saw leaves more room for error and can splinter the wood on complex trim. But it also depends on the size of your saw, how it's mounted (mine sits on the floor), how good the blade is, and what kind of wood you're using.

Awesome video, I am one of the Diy'ers you spoke of, I have seen other videos on crown molding mostly confusing. I am certain i can cut crown molding now using your jig and your tips!~! Thanks!!! You simplified it alot.

I wish I had watched this before I was almost finished adding crown molding to a huge lanai. I always had the back of the molding facing the fence and base of the saw, for stability, and was constantly switching back and forth from 45 to 45 and flipping pieces over the get the correct compound angle. I got dyslexia quite a few times and had to recut. The jig holds things as they are actually going on the wall, which helps visualize the correct angles. Oh well... maybe next time. Thanks for the education.

I usually cut crown the opposite way, against the fence. This will save lots of tear out for those little bits at the end of the small return pieces. Cool tool and free.
@Splatterpunk_OldNewYork2 жыл бұрын
Remember people, to get a blade with a 60+ tooth count, as it will make the cut smoother. The quality of your chop saw will also be evident very quickly when those angles start adding to 180 degrees. It might be beneficial to build an additional mitre precision fence, by placing a thin board down on your cutting bed, and pre-cut all your most common angles into it. Do not make a backing board that fits along the back like in some videos, your mitre is build with precision that your DIY boards barely reach. Then you can align all your cuts to the cut line without a sweat. You make it look easy Paul.

Simple as turning things around. Bedding crown upside down and backwards is the best way to cut crown but when doing larger crown it may exceed the height of the miter saw fence. This jig solves that problem. Why’d I never think of that !

Okay, do it with 8 inch clear walnut that costs $25 a foot. You are gonna need one big miter saw, or learn how to do it properly.
@cheyneturbyfill4727 Жыл бұрын
Pro: you can see the short point of your measurements which is where you will most likely be cutting to Con: tear out is always on the backside so better be keeping a sharp blade handy This is why it is typically best to nest crown against the fence. Same principle applies si that you can reverse the jig just remover to keep your crown upside down
