I've been in National Hemi Owners Association since summer 1979....library of all technical updates from Chrysler, and never saw anything about a group of 85 "NASCAR Special Editions." Stock car racing was STOCK cars when this car was produced..ie. ADD CAGE and slight suspension modification (quad shocks), wheel studs. To a production Hemi / 4 speed..."body in white".This car was owned and upgraded to NASCAR looks with cowl air ducting and rear spoiler(rare in LATE 66 season ON TRACK). My opinion only comes from knowing Ray Fox, who was under DODGE contract as a car builder. HE was "given" a fresh GUTTED Hemi/4 spd. Charger in 1966, for his younger son David's 16th birthday. IT won World 600 with Buddy Baker driving (HIS first win).

In 1965 I had gotten a Dodge Dart Charger. These little cars were a limited number that were put out and sold so Dodge could keep the name Charger secured. The charger was due out for the 1965 year but were very late. They were known as the 65 1/2 Charger. Today they are known as the 66? Kinda like the 2022s coming to the lots about now? I had never seen one with the 426. This body style was never that popular when they were being made. They sure have become a treasure today.

I don't think typical "Numbers Matching" was actually a thing on the '66 because the engine and trans were not VIN stamped by the factory until the 1968 model year. The only thing you got before '68 were the casting date codes that can confirm the age of the components as being "period correct" but not necessarily original as Numbers Matching implies. Also power brakes and steering, and a/c were rare and relatively expensive options on cars in that era. Most did not have them because a performance option package was very expensive, and it was thought that power options robbed the engine of performance so few ordered them.

The 66-67 were considered ugly ducklings in the 80's. I had a 69 at the time. An example like the one shown here could be had for eight grand in pristine condition. If only we knew how much they would bring today...

Oh, yeah! I remember your old man, he was at home beating some sense into his wife the night I stole it. Man I had some great memories in that car. I ended up selling it to some Mexicans who wanted to use it to transport drugs across the border.

Air conditioning was not a factory option on the Chargers with a Hemi. Chrysler said there wasn’t enough room for it because the Hemi took up most of the space in the engine compartment. Power steering and brakes were factory options if you wanted them.

I had a 1966 Dodge Coronet that I bought off my boss at the time. He thought it had a cracked block. I drug it home and found a rusted out plug in the block. I was young and really didn't know what I had but that car was fast as F and it had huge motor in it. Wall to wall. lol I wrecked it dicking off on evening. Didn't a rust spot on it anywhere.

I always wonder why they don't bother to ship these types of cars to other countries, you could certainly double that price.

The one thing I find really interesting is the intake plumbing, where instead of going to the front of the car, through the hood or even just open to the engine compartment, it has dual dryer vent style hose running back to the firewall. Reminds me a bit of the Thunderbolt, of course not to the headlight location.

the nascar options did that. but it does not have the white body matching wheels so either way. if it really was a nascar option the original rims are gone.

He should be able to go to his local DMV, pay a small fee (no more than $20, depending on the laws in the area), and get the complete history of the car from '66-present. If that doesn't show up anything, contact Fiat-Chrysler and run the Chargers VIN # with them
