I've been in National Hemi Owners Association since summer 1979....library of all technical updates from Chrysler, and never saw anything about a group of 85 "NASCAR Special Editions." Stock car racing was STOCK cars when this car was produced..ie. ADD CAGE and slight suspension modification (quad shocks), wheel studs. To a production Hemi / 4 speed..."body in white".This car was owned and upgraded to NASCAR looks with cowl air ducting and rear spoiler(rare in LATE 66 season ON TRACK). My opinion only comes from knowing Ray Fox, who was under DODGE contract as a car builder. HE was "given" a fresh GUTTED Hemi/4 spd. Charger in 1966, for his younger son David's 16th birthday. IT won World 600 with Buddy Baker driving (HIS first win).

I don't think typical "Numbers Matching" was actually a thing on the '66 because the engine and trans were not VIN stamped by the factory until the 1968 model year. The only thing you got before '68 were the casting date codes that can confirm the age of the components as being "period correct" but not necessarily original as Numbers Matching implies. Also power brakes and steering, and a/c were rare and relatively expensive options on cars in that era. Most did not have them because a performance option package was very expensive, and it was thought that power options robbed the engine of performance so few ordered them.
