PB Swiss Ratcheting Screwdriver Bit Holder: Better than Snap On? Absolutely a good question.

The PB Swiss Ratcheting Screwdriver Bit Holder is a beautifully exicuted ratcheting design. The soft grip handle, the fluid steel (stainless?) tip, the massive magnetic strength, and it's exceptionally smooth internal workings. But is it better than a Snap On? That's a great question. The PB Swiss makes the Snap On feel clunky and bloated. But is it worth as much as Snap On's top model 5-position soft grip ratcheting bit holder with interchangeable shafts? Or maybe a better question are any of the premium drivers worth their near hundred dollar asking price?
The driver featured in this video:

The longer shaft version:

The Stubby ratcheting version with bits:

I picked up the Klein 32305 (15-in-1) and it has a nice handle that many would say is on the larger size, but perfect for my use. Surprisingly, it also came with Combo #1 & #2 bits that are very useful in electrical work.

Wow I’m glad I bought my pb Swiss tools like 2 years ago. They used to have an American branch you could order from but they closed it only to sell on Amazon. I guess it was a good business decision because they have way more volume even though they shot the prices by like triple xD

i just picked one up. A bit underwhelmed but it is very sturdy feeling. I'm surprised they don't have serial numbers on the ratchets. I don't see one on yours either...almost makes me question if it's legit. Strange choice on their part to serialize picks but not ratchets. Still really like all my pb tools so far. The insider stubby lives in my pocket now.

Mine doesn’t have a serial number either, and it was bought from the biggest tool distributor in Switzerland, which is decidedly an authorized PB Swiss distributor, so 100% guaranteed to be genuine. It is odd, isn’t it?

I'd love to see a strength/ torture test, I've broken a few over the years. Everyone loves the wera for the price yet my handle snapped off mine and being busy I never warrantied it. I don't have the resources to break several drivers nor do I expect another guy to waste his. It would be cool though

Never once done that. I’d love to see some pics. How was the shaft secured into the handle? And how far into the handle was it?

@@BassWhoopinFishingTeam this was a year ago or so, it was the one with the carousel/magazine of bits that pops out with the push of a button. The shaft has a metal collar and was pretty strong. The part that broke was the handle which is in 2 parts. The bottom half of the handle twisted and snapped out. I've replaced it with a snap on which is miles better, the wera was great for a month or so but in my experience didn't hold up to real work.

Are they really worth the money? The 4” shaft version is $166 on Amazon. Way too high for what it is as far as I can tell.
@tookitogo
@tookitogo Жыл бұрын
That’s an insane markup. Here in Switzerland, they cost about $65 (tax included) for the -30 (1.2”) and about $70 for the -100 (4”). Based on his receiving his from Israel, it’s likely a third party vendor who, after paying to import them to Israel, is marking them up a bunch before selling them on to USA customers.

Nice review! How's the backdrag on the ratchet compared to the Snap-on? That's the thing that ultimately drew me to the Snap-on; the ratchet action on it (and the Williams branded near-clone) is incredibly smooth (less so on the 5-position, sadly). I suspect I'd have a couple of these PB Swiss ratchets by now if the direction selection didn't feel backwards to me. For the Snap-on and newer Milwaukees, you turn the collar in the direction you want to turn the driver. With the PB, Gearwrench, and a handful of others, you hold the collar and turn the handle in the direction you want to turn (or, more simply, you turn the collar in the opposite direction). I'm not sure why that difference bugs me so much, but let's face it, we're probably nitpicky about tools if we're watching a channel like this! Love the channel - probably my new favorite tool channel!
@tookitogo

The back drag on the PB Swiss is quite high. IMHO the only drawback to it. I work mostly on electronics stuff, so mostly small machine screws, and the back drag makes it basically useless for that. :(

@@lastbesttool I contacted PB Swiss regarding the serial number issue and they confirmed that both the 8510R-30 and 8510R-100 ratcheting screwdrivers DO NOT have serial numbers; but that might change at some point in the future. Now that you have probably spent some more time testing it out, what are your thoughts regarding comfort of use and overall build quality? And would you still recommend it when considering a premium ratcheting screwdriver. Thanks.

@@htr5372 You probably have a newer batch, as they were suppose to add serial numbers to both the 8510R 30 and 100. I am posting the following from what a representative from PB Swiss wrote back to me some months back regarding this: "Thank you for your interest in our products and our company PB Swiss Tools. I can inform you that at present our products PB 8510 R30 and R100 do not have any serial numbers. However, we plan to change this in the near future. Thank you for your patience. Kind regards, Freundliche Grüsse Irina Lüthi Commercial Apprentice, PB Swiss Tools Bahnhofstrasse 24" My 8510R 30 was indeed purchased from an authorized PB Swiss distributor here in the US. However, mine (like Doc's) does not have a serial number.

@@htr5372 You are very welcome. Btw, I mistakenly read your comment as in your ratchets HAVE serial numbers. Well, I guess we are all without serial numbers on the ratchets lol. I purchased the PB 8510 R30 Set, which includes some really nice bits and a red case. The case itself does have a serial number/bar code, just not on the driver. As for their ratchets being sourced from Taiwan, not sure. But I think all PB Swiss products and their components are all made in-house at their Swiss facilities. Regardless, I love their tools. Great quality! :)
