If I was playing the inside line and I had a choice to either go with loft or go to a weaker ball and play a different line, I'd take the weaker ball and play a different part of the lane. Possibly a weak reactive ball, urethane, or possibly even plastic and take my chances.

Ryan Shafer actually withdrew from the US Open because of all the lofting that happens there. He posted it on his Facebook a while back. "After watching B squad tonight and seeing the progression of the lanes, I have decided to withdraw entirely from the US Open. Due to my physical limitations (lack of significant ball speed, plantar fasciitis, and carpal tunnel), I determined that it was counterproductive to try and compete to the best of my ability on that condition. As it has been determined to be a 'required element' in today’s game to loft the ball over the left gutter cap at the the US Open, I am no longer capable of doing that without potentially hurting myself. I would prefer to prepare for the W.S.O.B. in Reno, starting November 6, 2017. It pains me to do this, because I have always looked forward to this event, and I have really wanted to win one of these in my career. But that time has passed. Thank you to all my family, friends and fans who came to watch this week. I apologize for my performance, or lack thereof.”

it’s not really a stone 8 if the ball deflected off like that. the entry angle is very minimal when you play it so deep that it’s very easy to leave 2 pins, 8 pins, 2-8 double wood or 2-8-10s even if you miss by the smallest of margins. the ball deflected on entry due to the minimal entry angle and exited the rack at the 9 pin spot instead. that doesnt qualify as a “stone 8” but “going light and leaving a 8”

the reason bowlers migrate left over the course of a tournament is because the oil in the front part of the lane gets stripped away. if there's no oil left in the front of the lane, you can't play there, period. your ball will always hook at your feet no matter how weak it is and it will never get to where it needs to be down-lane. this generally only happens when you have a lot of accurate high rev players bowling on flatter shots because the oil is less concentrated per board. i've bowled 8 game sweepers on house with plenty of high rev rate players and even in that environment, house shots have enough oil in the middle and front parts of the lane that once you move into that after the outsides dry up, you generally don't have to move much more for the rest of the tournament simply because of the insane volume. there's none of that on tour, hence loft.

I agree it’s loud and obnoxious and could even damage the lanes, that being said say a bowler is using their weakest ball, standing as far left (or right if you’re a lefty) as they can be and it’s still hooking too much? That’s what they will all do 100% of the time because that is what’s needed. They aren’t just going up settle for a bad game
