You must have heard of a Mofi router, I believe this should get you good internet. (high speed even). Same concept as a mobile hotspot just more effective. You just stick a sim card into the router. a 50GB monthly "unlimited data" sim card should be enough. You can find one for about $50 dollars a month. That is about 300-350 hours of World of Warcraft per month before data throttling. The only thing that can really mess up the data is streaming so i'd download a bunch of shit onto flash drives/another harddrive so you can focus the data on gaming and browsing/etc.

That said I am pretty sure you can use a Mofi router to connect to a nearby Starbucks or Walmart wifi which wouldn't affect your data. So any gaming you do in ur van in a walmart parking lot shouldn't affect your data.

A decent option for 'on the road' internet/ WiFi may be to have a stand alone HotSpot, along side a cell booster. With a decent enough mobile hotspot, location (signal) and cell booster, you may be able to get rather decent speeds/ping. This is nothing but an idea and i have no idea if it would work or not, but itd be worth putting some research into.

Internet on the road: "4gas" Google it. Essentially they use tmobile/sprint service providers towers legally (because they're monopolies and are forced to let others use their infrastructure) and sell you unlimited internet that you can use 4g through a router. For it to work you do need to be close to a cell phone tower, or at least have good line of site. If you are in a wooded area, or are far away you have to set up your own antenna. The thing is, they don't help you set this stuff up. You have to look up where you tower is, and set up your antenna and repeaters yourself.

Gaming truck driver here :D For internet you'll want to get a dual sim router with external antennas, and use AT&T and Verizon. Will cost ~$100 a month (can go with just Verizon to save on the bill, but you will lose out internet in some places). Gonna be upfront with you, Verizon is really the only option if youre using a single carrier. I've been almost everywhere in the US, and it's the only one thats going to work most of the time. That being said, it's not always just about signal; mobile internet is not the same as home internet. You need to run speedtest where youre parked before settling in for some gaming, a football field could be the difference between smooth, and laggy af. Using pathping on your games server can also help identify issues. The biggest problems you may have in some locations are: packet loss, peak hour priority, tower bandwidth, excessive ping/latency Packet loss can be caused by high traffic on an cell tower/network congestion, bad cell tower equipment, or even problems local to your own hardware. Peak hour priority is something most people have no idea even exist. For Verizon its Grandfathered true unlimited>paid data packages (before throttle cap, on contract)>New unlimited (before throttle cap, on contract)> Prepaid data package (Before throttle cap, prepaid)>Prepaid unlimited(?) not sure if this is even still available>New unlimited (after throttle cap, on contract)>Paid data package (after throttle cap, on contract)> Prepaid data (after throttle cap, prepaid) Cell towers have finite bandwidth, and in a highly populated area with few physical towers, you might just have a rough time trying to game competitively, something to keep in mind near a city center on a friday night XD. And finally, sometimes... the cell towers are just busted. Tbh, this is the worst because it's difficult to report, and even when you manage it, you'll be gone long before anyone is there to repair/replace whatever is broken. If youre tech savvy enough to find legitimate concern for bad cell tower equipment, you can call tech support and eventually talk to someone who will listen. Forewarning: it will take a few tries/transfers. Ask to talk to the top level of support, then every time they say they are the top level, overwhelm them with details, and you'll keep getting upgraded. Once you reach the tech support boss, give them the data you've collected and your location. If there are multiple cell towers near you, the may ask you to confirm the cell tower identity, which isnt too complicated. Oh, and I've tried the 4g lte weboost otr antenna, and while it does sometimes help in places where you'd only have 1 bar, in my experience it makes gaming worse in places with decent cell service, and the device itself runs hot, so use at your own discretion. Hope this info helps someone :P

Most phone service carriers offer a “ mobile router “ that works amazing. ( depending on the phone company of course. ) I use to work at Verizon so if you have them just ask for the jet pack, get the bigger and better one, and keep that bad puppy on the best unlimited plan and you’re set. 4g Lte WiFi all the time. hotspot pucks from ATT have an ethernet jack, so you could mount the puck somewhere clear of interference or metal, and run the cat5/6 to the pc that way. we do this for some of our organizations who have super slow internet in their office.

As a PC gamer who's also obsessed with tiny houses/mobile living, gaming was the ONLY thing that made me consider van-living an unattainable goal, but this was an eye opener! Still though, I gotta ask...… why didn't you just get a gaming laptop??? Or a tiny mini itx gaming PC? Gaming laptops nowadays are as powerful as desktop gaming PCs and would've been perfect for your setup. Is there a specific reason why you didn't go for a gaming laptop?

Gaming laptops can't, or at least not that much, be upgraded as time moves on. Also, I think that a gaming laptop is way too tiny in terms of keyboard and screen and when you go for those huge gaming laptops, you're better off building a tower since it'll cost you the same or less. I think the option of going mini ITX could be interesting and he could also play a little bit more with the space his hardware uses, like explode it a little and get creative. Just my 2c :)

Probly cuz they can't really be upgraded and because one with the kind of specs his PC has would be a few hundred more. In order to get comparable specs on a laptop you need to spend a lot more money. You can get a solid gaming PC with a 1080 and 16gb for $1200ish, a little less if you build it yourself, but a laptop with those specs would be like $1500-1800

For the internet, you can use sim card based modem. You can also use a Satellite based internet with a dynamic location configuration, not the cheapest way but it works flawlessly when there is no signal from sim card.

You should work a little longer, save every penny, and get a really nice trailer/camper instead of a van. WAY more space and you’ll love it much more. Way more doable long term, especially since a trailer/camper will last far far longer than a van in terms of miles you put in it. My uncle did this and he is so grateful he saved a little more.

Nice video! I am also a van life pc gamer. I just use a gaming laptop. If you need another way to charge up your batteries you could run wires to an isolator and then to your alternator. Then they charge while the engine is on. Works well for me with a 200ah setup. Necessity is the mother of invention aye.

I live on the road full time and use Ubifi for internet. It is a mobile hotspot but with unlimited data and none of the delays that you get with satellite. We do console and PC gaming just fine with it. It will work anywhere that you have phone signal
