Just here for the soundtrack, those door sounds, the silly dogs, the blue policemen and to remind myself of how scared I used to be while playing this game in my childhood. Never even reached the middle of the game. Was so scared to open door and confront and shoot, that I used to run back to a safe place and quit the game.

Andrew Haxley Get a Source port with mini map support. It will make the experience be more enjoyable and not frustrating, as the mini map will show where you were and can help you navigate levels (it does not reveal secrets for you, so you still have to explore, just doesn't make you get lost easily)

I was able to play this perfectly on my old Packard Bell 286 w/adlib card. You couldn't hear digitized speech, like them say mein leiben, but you could hear everything else, like the music and door opening fx etc. Spent countless hours playing this game in 1992. Then I convinced my dad to upgrade to a 486dx/33 in 1993 and played Doom with Soundblaster 16, which I downloaded off of a pirate BBS using our old Courier HST 14400. Good old days.

Nothing brings back the good, old, nostalgic feelings from my early PC days like this game. But the sound and music seems broken, as I don't remember them like that. I too used SoundBlaster, but AWE32, so maybe that's why. For me it sounded way better than it does in this video.

Qumquathedgehog As this game is probably played with DOSBox, or whatever, one would think they should have used the thing that gave best sound... I don't use DOSBox myself, so maybe no better quality sound card can be selected. It's just, to me it sounds like the sound effects cuts off often, are very low sound quality, and the music doesn't play fully like they are missing a bunch of instruments. Might remember wrong I guess. I personally anyway would have used the stuff that got the best sound, if possible, and not standard SB for the reason that maybe that's what most people used back in the days. Oh well, still about time this game was released on this channel :)

I use DOSBOX now, but I remember playing WOLF3D on multiple comps in the mid 90's and being astonished at just how different the MIDI sound was. I started listening to a bunch of MIDI's on different cards to see how they sound. "one would think they should have used the thing that gave best sound... I don't use DOSBox myself, so maybe no better quality sound card can be selected." I haven't used DOSBOX in a while, but I seem to remember it emulating different sound cards. The Longplayer (If using DOSBOX) may have selected the standard SoundBlaster card simply because it was more common, which would lead to a higher chance of more nostalgia per viewer. The only thing that sounds off to me is the "you're moving against a wall" buzzing. I remember that being clearer and more "buzzy".

The FPS that started it all. Then Doom came out a year later and the rest was history. Both are groundbreaking classics. I remember playing both Wolfenstein 3D and Doom in middle school in 1993. When someone asks me: How long ago were the 90s? Look no further than Wolfenstein and Doom and see how games looked back then compared to today. There's always those 2 games that are groundbreaking when it comes to paving the way. Whether its Pacman and Mario, Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, Wolfenstein and Doom.
