Hello, Is this the same with Thinkpad T440? my W key broke (only the top cover thingy, button still works no problem) and im tired of using external keyboard just because of that. I wanna use my underglowed keyboard :D anyway, what i need to know is, do i just need the "Cap" of the W key, and just press on it to kinda stick it on the actual button like lego, or do i need to replace the ENTIRE keyboard? If I just need the Button cap, can I use the W button cap from other notebook aswell (other than thinkpads) or do i have need exactly Thinkpad T440 Key Cap?

If by any chance anyone comes across this and has the same issue I did where the scissor mechanism wouldn't "go down" or click in place, the hinge may have come off and even if you put it down the two little plastic rods that act as levers in the middle (not sure if that's the right term) are preventing the mechanism to completely click shut and be flat. If you're lucky enough to not have broken them, like me, you can put the hinge back together. Stick one of the little rods in one side (if the holes are intact), pull on the opposite side slightly and put it in on the other side as well. When you fold the switch it should lay flat. Then you just have to line the holes on the top and the bottom with the hooks on the keyboard itself and push it down. It should click into place. Thanks for a good and straightforward guide. Saving folks even years later!

You just saved my day! A piece of chocolate found its way beside the key and it was stuck. I opened it rather carelessly with a knife and the mechanics jumped out. This worked well for all my earlier notebooks. Fortunately nothing was broken. Putting things together was not that easy. First clipping the mechanics onto the upper metal pins did not work, perhaps I bent the pins during removal or trying to press down the mechanics. But in the end I carefully lifted the lifted pins into position with a screw driver and then I could simply clip it in again. Fazit: Make sure the clips are in the right position before pressing down the mechanics.

The plastic retainers are model specific and are different with every computer model. Unless you had the exact same brand and model computer seen, yours will look different. The idea of this video is to show you the general concept so you know what to look for in your model computer. If you need to see the exact retainer up close that goes to your computer, you would remove a key cap and view yours.

Thank you very much for this instruction. I searched first in my own language, but the results were full of information garbage and completely on the wrong types of laptops with different keyboards. Then I decided to search in English and found your video. I bought a laptop of the same model range from a local classifieds site (used but in good condition) and after a few days my D key crumbled. It turned out that the carriage was damaged, just in the middle where both parts connect, it was broken off "mustache" (pin). I had to swap with some other key that I use the least. And there was just completely torn off the rubber key, this silicone "tubercle" (boob), and this problem had to be solved using thin double-sided tape. Now the key is pressed very tightly, but at least it works like that. After a short time, a similar problem arose with two other keys. One just falls out periodically from a light touch. Damn Lenovo engineers! The keys on this laptop are impossibly delicate and fragile. Is it because of one damaged key that it is proposed to buy and replace the entire keyboard, with disassembly of the entire laptop? Very stupid move by the company. And the very delicate plastic of the laptop case itself, scratches and crumbles like plasticine.

Thank you - this helpful video explained to me why I broke the plastic clip below the S key (i was trying to clean under it) on my Thinkpad P1 by removing it incorrectly. While replacing it with a new clip though I tried several times unsuccessfully to follow the instruction at 4:00 which is to snap the bottom holes of the clip into the bottom pins first and then the top holes into the top pins. Looking at it through a magnifying glass I realized that the top pins are hooks pointing towards the screen. So I tried it in reverse which was to hook the top holes in the clip around the top hooks and then the bottom holes quickly snapped into place.

My laptop has not been dropped, banged, or abused, and yet the C and V keys a popping off, and it looks like the top clips/retainers are busted. Hey man, firstly, thanks so much for the video. My cat decided to scratch and damage + 4 of the number keys on the right hand side numpad on my Legion 5 Pro. I never use the numpad so it wasn't too big of a deal but I decided to buy replacement keys which also came with spare springs and retainer clips. I had trouble fixing them so I left it hanging for a while. I found your video again and decided to give it a try and it worked for 3 keys. However for one of the keys, the spring actually came off. I'm not sure if I wasn't being careful or because the clip was exposed for months, the glue weakened. What can I do instead? Additionally, I have problems with some other keys as well which being W, Q and D. Those keys are much more important and it was affecting normal use. So I decided to call up Lenovo and since I had a Legion Ultimate support, I was being offered to get a free replacement of the entire keyboard INCLUDING the palmrest (which had gotten dark in some spots due to me resting my palm all the time). Unfortunately, because 4 of my numkeys were damaged, and that falls under user inflicted damage, they couldn't proceed with the keyboard replacement and I was really pissed. If I manage to get my keys fixed (3 are done, just 1 left) and contact them again, do you think its safe to let them do the free replacement for me if they don't remember from before? The keys and clips look pretty much the exact same. I'm not sure if thats a really dumb idea, and I don't wanna get into any legal trouble or get my warranty fully void. Sorry for the long message.

Either the hinge clip is damaged, not orientated correctly, or the metal pins on the keyboard are bent out of place and wont allow it to snap in correctly. Those are the most likely issues

what do we do if we’ve broken the really thin plastic on one of the corner holes? should we get a new retainer clip? or is there some way to diy it? my keycap will snap back in, but then come loose again even worse, my thinkpad (e15 gen 4) has a trackpoint and i broke the clip of the h key, so it’s differently shaped than all the other keys and i can’t just swap it out… wondering if i can get a replacement somewhere???

the hole i’ve snapped was on the inner clip, by the way if that helps

@@candylever3838 If any part of the key is damaged or broken, you will have to replace it. I usually get my keys on Ebay or www.replacementlaptopkeys.com. If you cannot find a loose key for sale, you may have to purchase a keyboard and take a key from there.

When you say to "push up" around 3:00, does "up" mean towards the ceiling, or towards the keys above that one?
@PC_Monkey3 жыл бұрын
Towards the key above that one :)

This was close, but not quite, for mine (Thinkpad T480s). The 2 plastic pieces under the key behaved a little differently and needed to be held together then seated EXACTLY at the right spot. The the key on top had a pin on each side that had to be inserted, and THEN the magic press down to click the key into the plastic set and finally attached. Phew!

Do this for Function Keys on top row 😛
@PC_Monkey Жыл бұрын
They are pretty much the same. Same components, just a bit smaller. Also, on some function keys, the hinge clips are orientated sideways from what is seen here. So you may be better inserting the pry tool from the top or bottom instead of the sides.
@xephael3485 Жыл бұрын
@@PC_Monkey apparently the same model of laptop with identical looking keys can have up to 3+ different styles of key retainer types... If you make another video you might also want to mention that; as it could cause problems if they buy a keyboard online and think the parts will exchange.

@@xephael3485 Yes, many models of computers are like that unfortunately :( Its not a very good system lol
