For others trying to get all the info :) PCOS suggestions: Foods (low GI diet/lower carb): whole wheat bread, citrus fruits, milk, bulgur, sweet potatoes, chick peas, steel cut oats, lentils, healthy fats and proteins, higher fiber carbs, stabilize higher GI carbs with lean/healthy proteins and fats, be careful with restricting/too low calories/too few meals. Supplements: vitamin d, probiotics, omega 3, inositol (!!) Herbs, etc: macca root, ashwaghanda, holy basil, licorice, chase berry, tribulis terrestris. Anti-inflammatory foods, reduce CRP Get a lot of sleep (7-9 is the typical recommendation) and stress management, quit smoking cigarettes, get acupuncture, avoiding known potential endocrine disrupters (eg BPA). Exercise, yoga, meditation and massage, etc? (Not mentioned) weight loss for overweight women? More in-depth info in video. Eat enough food! Especially protein, and in AM and before bed. Medications (eg metformin, etc) Move your body in the way that fits for you Work on loving your body and RESPECTING your body! Have compassion for your body and gratitude for what it can do. ❤️😊

@@halima4355 Yes, as far as I know, most adults, especially those with PCOS, will benefit from eliminating milk/dairy. Alternative "milks" such as nut milks (almond, hazelnut, cashew etc), coconut milk and flaxseed milks are best. They won't mess with our hormones like dairy. Just make sure you're not allergic to any of these alternatives.

Hi Hailey, consider checking your nutrient profile i.e. tracking everything you eat and comparing to RDA for each nutrient. I tend to want to eat more (in the I'm-not-satisfied-and-I-have-no-idea-why way) when I'm deficient in iron. You'll be surprised at how difficult it is to get 100% iron RDA even when you eat meat. So you never know, it could be a deficiency not a disorder (not necessarily iron, but anything your body needs, which translates to, cravings). Also RDA is for the average person. Your body might need more than RDA depending on its own needs. Like I have naturally higher levels of testosterone (very tall, lots of hair) so I might need more iron than the average woman.

Hi Hailey, have you ever been screened for ADHD? I have PCOS too and have always thought about food constantly and felt completely powerless to eat in a way that felt healthy (as opposed to slamming 3 bags of sour gummy bears in my car while crying). I was diagnosed this year with ADHD as an adult, and treatment has made a huge difference in the mental barrage of cravings. I'm actually able to notice my physical hunger cues. Just something worth looking into; might not be relevant to you but it was something I had never considered. Feel free to reach out if you have questions. ❤️

A few points - 1. this is why we need OB's or doctors specifically trained in PCOS. The lack of medical knowledge of PCOS is really sad. 2. Once you do find a doctor who knows about PCOS it helps so much. I was put on metformin and i dropped weight effortlessly with intuitive eating. They said - of course you couldn't loose weight before, your body was literally fighting against you for every calorie! Ladies - get a doctor how knows about PCOS and have them treat you. It makes a world of difference.

When I moved to Romania, I lost 85 lbs and all my PCOS symptoms went away for the two years I was there. My symptoms and weight returned when I returned to the US. @@AbbeysKitchen Unfortunately, it only works when I'm outside of the US. In the US, I'm morbidly obease whereas my weight drops to slightly overweight when I'm abroad through intuitive eating and jumps back up when I return. I've tried, unsuccessfully, to duplicate the same diet here but it doesn't work. After this happening 3 different time I've moved abroad, I'm almost convinced there is an environmental or food additives that my body is having trouble with in the US. I literally cried while watching... I've PCOS since my periods started and I'm 27 years old now at 81 kgs. All my doctor could tell me is to reduce my weight and take Glucophage or birth controls. Got fed up of taking Glucophage thrice daily 3years ago so I switched to birth controls which only worsened my situation and lead to more weight gain. So I switched back to Glucophage. Went through an abusive marriage including a miscarriage unknowingly that I was pregnant and was teased by my now ex husband every other day about my weight even to an extent that he restricted my food intake as per his choices. Now all I want is to eat as I wish, but everyone tells me to reduce weight. Weight loss has always been so difficult and no one ever understands the cravings you get. Its really hard to maintain a healthy body weight while dealing with other emotional factors too. But most people don't get it and it really hurts when doctors even don't understand. Its not as easy as it always seems on social media to shed lots of pounds. My best wishes to everyone out there struggling with PCOS.

I was only recently (a month ago) diagnosed with PCOS at age 23 and I really didn't receive any advice, information or guidance from my doctor. I've been referred to a gynaecologist but it'll be at least 40 weeks until my appointment, maybe due to covid but I'm unsure of exactly why. I cried throughout this video because I've never felt so understood and looked after and seen! & I don't have anybody I can talk to about this, and this video was so helpful! Thank you so much for this 💕 wishing us all the best on our different, but same, journeys 💗

Try intermittent fasting for the cravings! I waited for a morning when I randomly didn’t feel as hungry and waited until 10 to eat and made myself stop at 6. It really, really helps! Sometimes I give in a little early and sometimes I give in at night and I’m not a perfect eater during my eating window. But slowly but surely it’s been great. I HIGHLY recommend it.

Wow I needed this video!! My doctor told me the way to handle my PCOS was to lose weight - 50lbs, although she wanted me to lose more... i weight 160lbs and I’m 5’4... if I lost that much weight, I’d be underweight.... I’ve battled an eating disorder for the majority of my life and my doctor didn’t care whatsoever, she was so cold and uncaring, fat shamed me in her office, and I left in tears feeling so badly about myself in a way I hadn’t in so long. Thank you for calling this out, the both of you! I don’t think some of these doctors understand the impact that has on a person, it’s like telling someone who’s depressed to “stop being sad” or “it’s not that bad,” it doesn’t help in any way! Abbey I love your videos! ❤️ Ok bye 😬

At one point I was even really depressed and just with no hope, so those comments hurt even more. There was a really dark time in my life. It just helps to hear that I'm not making this up and that some things are normal. With that said, I am still currently on a LCHF diet which I have found has been the only thing that helped me turn things around in a long while and I feel great. Thanks for this though, really.

I’m so glad to hear this. Your videos have helped me reach a healthy relationship with food. I was diagnosed with pcos and the first thing that was recommended to me was to see a nutritionist but was pushed to follow a 1200 calorie diet which spiraled into calorie counting and made my relationship with food so toxic and I would get frustrated when the weight would come back when I cheated on that diet. Now I’ve learned to love my body as it is and eat a healthy diet that isn’t calorie restricted but full of whole foods and I feel like my body feels nurished and better then ever. Doctors still tell me I’m overweight and need to be 125 range when I’m not but when i was “skinny” I never felt so unhealthy. This video helped me a lot personally and I wanted to thank you for finding my peace with food and my body

Zee Cook that’s awful that a professional told you eat 1200 calories a day. You should report him or her. Unfortunately, it seems like many of the dieticians and nutritionists in practice have their own eating disorders. I was lucky enough to see a dietician who helped me lose weight safely and slowly. She pushed for 1.5 lbs, 2 lbs max a month and it worked so well for me. The change was so slow and gradual, it truly just became a new way of life. Never give up 💕

I love this content! I was diagnosed with severe pcos at the age of 17 (didn't have a period for a year in my teens which was a big red flag) and my specialist told me to aim for protein but never lift weights as weightlifting is "testosterone producing". I followed his advice for years and honestly started to hate walking (recommended 1 hour of walking every day) and that made it worse. So I started to ignore his advice and started lifting and it REALLY helped me out so much, and has helped with cravings. Now I crave lifting weights more than sweets (though the craving for sugar is INTENSE).

I always get told I have to lose weight, and I know and want to get back down to the weight I used to be - and I never get any real help with my PCOS. This video has helped me so much! To know that I'm not alone. People even my family look at me and tell me I need to stop eating so much when the reality is that I eat normally and sometimes not even enough, I know it's not because I'm stuffing my face and it's just my body and hormones. so only halfway through this video I must say I am impressed by the amount of research you put into this and how accurate it is! I am just finishing med school and since I have PCOs myself I read many papers and did my research in uni...and as always I clicked on this video expecting it to be some dr. mike kind of "keto diet solves everything" video....but wow did you surprise me! This is the first video I saw from you - won't be the last! I love how informed you are, how you talk about PCOs with 0 judgment and in a very kind way, I love all the research links! And I especially love the fact that you always say whether this is proven in a study or maybe just placebo and you add the limitations of studys!!! Those are very important! In the end this is actually the first "diet video" I agree with 90% (and I have seen like A LOT of them)! Only point I have to add is to the weightloss: Yes if you are thin don't bother with this but if you are overweight with PCO weightloss is suuuuuch an important part of the treatment (and even though it is difficult it is absolutly possible)! Fat cells produce estrogen and that will increase allll your endocrine troubles, whether that is infertility or hairloss or acne (most of those are caused by testosteron which is a precursor of estrogen and will be produced in larger quantities) -> High estrogen will destroy your entire menstrual cycle (f.e. the estrogen peak in the middle of your cycle will cause an LH peak and with that ovulation...if you have a massive overload of estrogen you won't have such a "peak" -> no ovulation) and the hormon balance! The weightloss (even "just" 5% of your bodyweight) will increase the likeliness of pregnancy and will reduce your risk for metabolic syndrom! It souldn't be the only thing your dr talks about but it has to be talked about! Diets don't work that's true but diets don't work because they are a short term "solution" with overweight (no matter if PCOs or not) -> It will be frustrating if you expect fast results, it is very limiting to get fast results and if you are starving your body it will make you have cravings and you will eat like never befor and your body will take every bit of energy it can get -> you need to go for a long term dietary change. Intuitive eating won't help though since your entire hunger system is taken over by hormones (heaps of insulin but also ghrelin, lack of leptin, plus estrogen also builds of fat tissue) so if you eat what your body tells you - especially with pcos - you will not stop eating/getting fatter...Listening to your cravings at some point is important though - write down when and how they are happening, find a way of preventing them (f.e. eat smaller meals but more often to keep the blood sugar levels consistantly over the "craving" level) and maybe even find sth that satisfies your craving without being the craving (f.e. my craving for chicken nuggets can also be satisfied by the plant based alternatives from the vegetarian butcher and my craving for choclate milk can also be satisfied by a dark choclate drink) If you wanna lose weight aim for 500g a week, measure your calories (even if you have PCOs you will not gain weight if you burn more calories than you eat!) and don't go too far down with your calory intake (anything under 1500kcal will end up in cravings and weight cycling), eat healthy, frequently, with sugars that are digested slowly (f.e. wholewheat) and fibre - don't starve yourself and figure out which healthy foods and meals you like! plus also be active (low impact sport if you are overweight! I recommend everything the "body project" channel here on yt has! there are plenty other vids but this one is the one I worked with) try all that for 1-2 weeks! Then take the most important 2 hours: sit down and write down what worked, what didn't work and how you can fix that (remember: What you are doing is sth you should do forever - if something is not working for you you will most likely quit it so think of ways to at least make it a bit more fun or achievable - you can always set higher goals later on but if you set them right at the beginning and have no fun you are very likely to give up! and set SMART goals - if you don't know what that is google it)! And then write down your meals for the next 2weeks so you never have to think about what you want to eat and never have to go to the supermarket without knowing what to buy! Don't be too hard on yourselfs though: you can plan an unhealthy meal if you want to - but keep the calories in mind, maybe do an extra training for it - but when planing a few of your old dishes the transition is easier and it won't feel like you have to cut down on everything! Nr 1 priority: Stick with it. No matter how small the change is - if you "only" lose 200g a week but stick with it over 5 years you can say "In 5 years I see myself 50kg lighter" but if you go back and forth losing and gaining weight in rapid cycles you will be the same weight you are now! And I mean most of us have had their weight problems for far over 5 years...it's not the end of the world if it takes us another 2 to lose it again... A few more helpfull tricks: 1) Invest a few dollars and get yourself a scale that measures body fat and a few other things - it will help you stay on track when you see you didn't lose any weight but you lost fat! Weight yourself every day BUT when measuring progress compare the weekly averages - not the single day stuff - there is so much fluctuation between the days depending on if you already went to the toilet, drank a lot and for us women the bloating and edemas that come with menstruation is a factor as well - taking the average gives you a better view of what you lost! My scale has an app to do that and it cost me less than 30$ 2) Get an app like lifesum to track the calories so you don't have to do that on your own because it's a struggle! 3) And lastly tell all your friends about it - ask them to motivate you or join you on your trainings or sth! I kid you not we once had a tutor telling the entire lecture (200+ people) he is on a diet and if anyone sees him eat sth on campus that is unhealthy we can just go up to him and take it away to eat it ourselfes xD don't go that far but hey this dude lost weight and build up muscle so fast!!! Through this move he found a group of guys wanting to train with him and they got so healthy!

also there are different types (9 different stereoisomers) of inositol: D-chiro-inositol and myo inositol f.e. - D-Chiro is an aromatase inhibitor which means testosteron is no longer transformed to estrogen which will lower your estrogen levels but also you will be stuck with testosteron so while it can be a great supplement you have to make sure you are taking the right ones (the right ratio of these stereoisomers) or your symptoms can actually worsen! The ratio between myo and D-chiron-inositol should be 40:1!!! Your dr most likely won't know that though

I was recently diagnosed with PCOS. For the past three years I've been in the gym and tried to eat very clean and have only gained weight. A part of me knew I'd have it because my mom does. I was pretty devastated because I really want to lose weight and I knew that it'll be hard to do. With PCOS, it's pretty difficult to lose weight. This video is super informational and helpful about what I should try eating to help with weight issues. I'm hoping I can drop some pounds soon, and all the foods for the GI diet are ones I actually love. Can't wait to try it.

THANK YOU. Just for real. I’ve spent years trying to get a logical hold on PCOS and have struggled with the “right” diets that caused me to yo-yo in eating habits (slim PCOS here, too, so it took longer to get a dr to diagnose me correctly). I’ve been struggling to feel like I understand it all. I appreciated this video SO SO SO MUCH. Bless youuuu.

Rean Manalili hi there! Personally I just try to stay away from "diets" like keto and similar as they are never sustainable for me and I end up breaking them. I’ve very slowly removed dairy and I’m always trying to stop eating processed sugar (sigh pastries) so I can keep insulin levels in check. That seems to help my acne stay away, too. Still learning what works for me. I try to incorporate any androgen blocking foods like salmon, nuts and spearmint tea (and others). I think a huge part is just trying to de-stress and rest. Very strict diets are stressful for me lol. Best of luck to you in your journey! :)

I cried from watching this video! Thank you so much for shedding light on this subject! I thought I was simply a weak person for not being able to resist to my cravings! I have hypothyroidism, pcos and binge eating disorder and struggle so much with my weight and all the symptoms that come with my health condition. This information has taken a big weight off of my shoulders! I felt so guilty for not being able to manage with myself and knowing that there is a reason for all of this has just shifted my perspective of things! Thank you sooo soo much!

Omg Thank you so much for this! The lack of information, research and solutions for PCOS is crazy to me. I struggled for years before my diagnosis and then 6 years to get pregnant. I read about people’s success with Keto and PCOS and decided to give it a try. I did it for 5 months, lost 40lbs and got pregnant! It completely changed my life and all my symptoms. I’m glad a low glycemic diet is being recommended here, no doctor I ever saw in 12 years ever brought up food as a method of control for PCOS. So discouraging.

Hanna Bryant I actually knew about this supplement from Martin MacDonald (His IG account is @Martinnutrition if you want to seek more advices from him). His recommendation is: - 2-4g per day of 500g Myo-Inositol is a seemingly good starting dose. - There is another form of Inositol called D-Chiro-Inositol, don't use that. (And if you insist on using it, DM him on Instagram for advice.) - Take it daily for 6 months. Results can come much sooner but for some people/issues it can take that long. It took only 1 month for me to get my period back.

This video is one of the first, and only, I have ever watched that made me feel like I wasn't crazy when it came to my PCOS. I have had intense food cravings since I was a kid and find it nearly impossible to lose weight which has lead to disordered eating in the past. For the first time I feel like I have the information I need to fight for my own health plan without being steamrolled by a doctor who "knows better" than I do.

Thanks for this video, lots of great info! I was a sufferer of PCOS, needed medical intervention to convince my first, but as soon as I dropped about 30 pounds I was able to naturally conceive my second. And now, I'm down 120 pounds and I tell people I have beat PCOS! So I would like to put out there that there are people who have successfully 'treated' PCOS with weight lose, not everyone fails. Also I know your point is not everyone can or needs to lose weight, but it saved my life!

I want to cry tears if relief! I've dealt with this since middle School but did not get diagnosed (with abnormal uterine bleeding) until college. Depression and anxiety interfered with school and my social life. It's good to learn about PCOS, discover that other people have it, and try to come up with realistic solutions.

Thanks for making this video. When I was diagnosed with PCOS, when trying to conceive, my fertility doctor would tell me to lose weight. Yes duh of course I knew this. My fertility doctor would weigh me and take my bmi every time I went in for a check up and I felt so shamed if I didn’t lose any weight or didn’t meet the goals they wanted. For a year she did this and refused to help treat my infertility until I lost a certain amount of weight (I was definitely overweight but not unhealthy). I was doing everything I could but it just never seemed enough for them. I felt like crying every time I was in her office as she just didn’t seem to understand. I was so frustrated at them for wasting a year of my time that I just left and felt like giving up. My GP did put me on metformin, which I do believe helped in some way. Also the stress of not needing to keep up this unattainable weight loss regime. 6 months later I got pregnant on my own.

My doctor tried to tell me I had PCOS even though my only symptom was irregular periods and never did any sort of testing to confirm it. I don't have acne, irregular hair growth, or any other listed symptom. This was frustrating to get this diagnosis from a supposed professional with little to no indication I had PCOS and no ruling out of other issues.

I've been struggling with PCOS ever since my teens and I am 36. I don't miss periods, but I have excessive body and facial hair. Even though I try to manage it, it's a daily struggle. Even though I try to lose weight, I can only "succeed" in gaining weight. So at times I am getting at my wits end with everything and I feel like the last person on earth. This video has been so helpful in ways you may not have thought of, Abbey. Thank you so much!!! I've never respected my body and have hated it for everything that it does, but this video turned a switch in my mind and I will reconsider a lot of things
