PCT Day 80: Mammoth to Sonora Pass / KMN, Day 5 of 9

In 2023, in spite of record shattering snowfall in the Sierra mountains of California, I am undertaking a thru-hike attempt of the Pacific Crest Trail in an effort to complete my Triple Crown! Follow along as I see just how far the trail will let me go!

Thanks again for the great videos. I have hiked and backpacked in the high sierras for many years in the summer warmer years without snow. I have been up above the Mono pass at over 12.000 feet in late July about 20 years ago. There were at least 5 nights that dropped to the low 20s with our water freezing outside the tent overnight. I always carry enough clothing to survive nights well below freezing. I put on my sweatshirt, rain jacket, heavy sleeping pants, heavy wool sox, polar fleece jacket, warm poly hat, gloves, with my sleeping bag. I would even walk around before sleep to get warm blood to my feet. I fall asleep fast with warmer feet. I can not sleep with cold feet. Even in mid summer the temps in the sierras can fall over 10 degrees below freezing. Usually, it is at or just below freezing nearing 10,000 feet in the summer. your situation in melting snow or slush it is very difficult to stay dry and warm. You can not live with a soaked down sleeping bag, clothing or boots in temps even nearing freezing.

Yeah it definitely takes some work to make sure that we keep the cart before the horse out here, and keep our gear performing as we need it to. In 99% of camping situations a sleeping bag is mostly for comfort, you're absolutely right that out in serious mountains and serious conditions, it's more like safety equipment

You guys are doing amazing. That trail is rough without the snow and the river crossing. Amazing to be at Agnew Meadows and Yosemite without the crazy crowds. You guys are seeing amazing things, it is tough and you are putting your best foot forward each day. Enjoy--it is even more of an adventure! Thanks, Richard!! We're kind of splintering off now-- seems like all groups are splintering after Sierra. No hard feelings, etc, just different people moving at different speeds. We'll all keep in touch though

@@travelinbeat I think it was Feb.2? and they summited 8 days ago. I'm not positive on the dates. but I do know they were on trail 120 days which included zero days and the approach trail as well.
