These guys are soooo funny. They make me think of break dancers in the 80s doing the robot when they try to mount a female. You always pick the right music too for the video soundtrack, they seem like they are dancing along with it. These are therapy videos! :)

This rapid bouncing is quite interesting. One needs to slow it down to see what's going on. I did a couple of scenes with a highspeed camera at 1000 frames/sec which showed that the opisthosoma is hitting the ground repeatedly

I am normally very aversive with the jumping spiders (cause over here in the netherlands you have the zebra striped ones and they can bite painfully...) but these colourfull ones are cute looking... It even looks like they have little mittons on with which they rub out their eyes... :) Very nice and very clear taped...

There seems to be 2 different species (or subspecies?) here, as one has a bright orange uni-brow and the other has deeper orange spots behind the eyes. The center pattern of the dorsal abdomen is slightly different as well.

DWsProductions well observed, one of them is from the sydney area the other from further north. Meanwhile I have found 1 or 2 other distinct populations. Whether one calls these varieties, subspecies or species is more or lass a matter of taste

I wonder what caused the female to kick him off? at first glance it seems the same as all the other attempts but if you look closely, on the other attempts the male flicks the bit on the end of the abdomen (dont know its name) whilst mounting, however on the failed attempts, he failed to flick, perhaps she was displeased

Yes, this is a very interesting variation on the drumming. I also suspect that is the function of the pulsing setae during the breeding act - they remind the lady that this is a suitor rather than either prey or predator, so she doesn't attack him. Short memory if she forgets mid-coupulation that she agreed to the tryst, eh? ;D
@islandbirdw

Your videography is first rate. I can’t imagine how many hours it must have taken in the jungle setting up and waiting for the little guys to get dancing! It looks as if the males have to be quick on their toes! They seem to try and put the females into some sort of a trance and they test it before they’re all in so to speak or perhaps she’ll eat him?

Thank you! Lovely series about a beautiful and endearing species. I kept thinking of corny love songs and come-ons during the videos (je t'aime - moi non plus, I'm gonna make love to ya woman, I'm gonna booglarize ya baby and one from Tom and Jerry). Also, I could readily see text bubbles during the closer scenes. He waves legs: I love you THIS much! She wipes her eyes: Oh, you're just teasing... Moves closer: No, really! Turns away and tilts head back: Bet you say that to all the other girls!

James King Thanks James, today's cameras really have given us new eyes with which to explore our surroundings again, and it is no surprise we now discovering a previously hidden world. Well, as a biologist I am convinced humans and spiders do have a common ancestor, obviously a long way back.

Do you suspect that the display of the male, who is clearly smaller than the female, is orchestrated to make him look taller and bigger than the female, so that he will not be eaten? Any number of animals go out of their way to appear larger than they are, so that they will seem less vulnerable. Otherwise, that raising of the male on his legs like stilts seems odd. Certainly, being related to the jumping spider, the peacock spider has to be pretty smart.

Got to say that I love your peacock spider videos. I'm a big fan of jumping spiders down here in Louisiana, as they are useful, tidy, fairly social, never in the way, and non-aggressive. I wish there were more KZbin videos of them, but having no quality camera, I would not be the one to make them.

I'm also wondering if the colours and patterns have any hypnotic properties, considering that south American birds often use strange feather movement and colour patterns to confuse their mates and scare them so they think they're powerful in some weird sense. I know as a hypnotherapist I like staring at them.

rate of success, that's a difficult one. Most of the females a male will encounter will already be mated, so I think the rate is very low. The males seem to put an enormous amount of effort into courting the wrong females
