So, basically: 1. Struggle: push yourself to your limits, trying to accomplish some goal that is beyond our current skill level, while embracing the frustration 2. Release: when the struggle becomes unbearable, completely let go of the struggle and relax 3. Flow: Force the flow state by putting yourself in a position of high consequence, rich environment and immediate feedback loop. The part of the brain responsible for self moderation and self criticism is deactivated, and the brain gains access to large amounts of dopamine and serotonin. 4. Recover: Restore dopamine and serotonin by sleeping well and resting.

Struggle : How many hours? 25 minutes (Pomodro) 52 minutes? 90 minutes? The modern work is not suitable for flow! - Looking at monitor at 6 hours? - Possible but not good for health

All good points, but we don't force flow. Ironic, you can't force it. It's a zen state that arrives when you tune to that frequency. In fact I'd say it's completely the opposite of force.

1. Struggle: push yourself to the limit of your current ability. Embrace frustration. 2. Release: when struggle becomes unbearable, completely let go of struggle and fully relax 3. Flow 1. High consequence 2. Rich sensory experience 3. Immediate feedback: externalizing what you do to reduce the (action -> result -> correction) loop 4. Recover: restore dopamine and serotonin by sleeping well

Had to pause this 2 minutes in. I've achieved this state, many times, skydiving, snowboarding, playing music, tennis, cycling (long distance), even coding/working. The clarity achieved during these periods is amazing. I think I enjoy, more than anything, the single minded focus, pinpoint even. Given the distractions that batter us dailya, it's a treat to slip into that zone whenever possible and the quality of focus/work that I achieve is incredible (so sayeth myself...). When working, I call it mad scientist mode. Anyway, I digress, this is incredible stuff. Quite powerful.

I do Spartan (Obstacle Course/Trail Running) Ultra 50Ks, which hits all of these factors of flow. The big thing I learned from this video is the "Recover" portion, I would typically slip into a depression a couple days after the event for no apparent reason. As I have gained more experience I have learned to just take the week off after the event to eat, sleep, and recover. I guess part of that was to build back up my dopamine and serotonin reserves, it makes sense now why I would feel so depressed.

Hi Nathan Thanks for this great summary of Kotler's book on FLOW! Interesting that you added public speaking to the content of your video. I have been teaching people with fear of public speaking to get into FLOW for speaking in public. Kotler's book has been helpful in explaining why public speaking fear can help speakers hack the FLOW state. Now I have your video to help!

Thank you, I knew there was another activity I was forgetting. It is a tremendous feeling to slip into flow while presenting/speaking. I'll say this, it's happened to me when I'm completely prepared and not having to "think" about what's coming next. A great experience, truly.

Does he present and explain evidence in the book for his claims? For example: an athlete going down a waterfall in a kayak or climbing rocks is the equivalent of an NBA player in finals game 7 having to make 1000 free throws, 100 3s, and a half-court shot with 100% accuracy. I've been disappointed at times after reading similar things described as "scientific" but end up making too many unfounded claims and comparisons. Thanks

As a creative, transportation designer, this book is not recommended, all the other book reviews I’ve seen on this channel are the ones to listen to in order to avoid procrastination and burnouts. This book is perhaps for supermen, people wanting fame quickly.

Flawed. Traditional sports have been around longer and been competitive longer, hence the name traditional. The adventure sports are new to competition. Let's see how long it takes for a world record to be broken in an adventure sport 10 years or longer from now.

Lol. These new fake sports don't have enough history to be compared apples to apples with real sports, that thousands of high level athletes have actually gotten cut from for 50+ years... are they great. accomplishments? Sure, but stop comparing Kayakers to Jordan, Greztky and Babe Ruth. Lol!
