In this series we take a deep dive into the art of retraining a "Problem Horse" that has learned to rear and flip over on the rider. He did this 4 times to the previous trainer and once to the owner.
the owner contacted me earlier in the year asking for help and after Ryan Rose did the evaluation for his KZbin channel, we waited for there to be room in the barn for this horse to come in for long term training.
Follow along on the journey as most all of the session will be shared here, none of the "dirty stuff" or "behind the barn" things people think of are hidden. We didn't really need anything special, just a great dose of confidence, yielding, patterns and purpose. Put together in the appropriate sequence, Cisco makes great progress in his time with us. This is the start!

I never get tired of watching the light come on. Beautiful example of the beginnings of your 4 Areas of Development. I'm thinking you should do a Horse Development clinic in Washington. 😉🥰

I'm stealing your analogy "when they go up they're losing their marbles and when they bring their head down the marbles roll back in". I used help people with their "problem horses" in my younger days and I could have used this for both the horse and often the panicked rider whose marble dislocation often set the horse up to lose theirs. Sometimes it's just the horse or just the rider, but it often becomes a combination of both the horse and rider feeding off each other's energy. I always found that if you expect them to act up they can sense it and probably will. It's hard for many who've been scared or injured to let go of that expectation of it happening again.

Well said. I got the marble analogy from Mary Kitzmiller. I also like to say when their head goes down, the blood rushes to their brain and their brain grows bigger. Thanks for watching

A friend had a confirmed rearer that had run off with its rider several times. I rode it twice and stopped because the “just about to blow up” feeling he gave me. I wanted to work with him but didn’t have the experience or the confidence at the time. Also didn’t have the tools such as the 20 ft lead rope or flag! I would have loved these videos back then!❤

I love that you said when he puts his head down the marbles are rolling back into his noggin.😄 I’ve been trying your flag technique with my flighty guy and the look on his face in the beginning was hilarious. I swear he looked at me like “OK so I’m supposed to stand here and take you whapping that flag thing on my head and be cool with it? Another dumb idea you came up with? Sigh” He’s getting it though, I love that. We are doing sideways with head down now and it’s really helping both of us.

It’s great to see your take as well as Ryan’s on this guy. I was lucky enough to meet you two in Pagosa Springs quite a number of years ago. I love watching both of you work with these troubled horses. It’s an art form!! 🤗

Thank you! It was a great thing to help this guy and his owner get to the other side, and it was great to help Ryan out getting a good video for his channel in the short term until I could fit Cisco in for long term training.

is the purpose of having the herding type of dog around a part of teaching the horse to bond with the handler and ignore (or not react to) what's happening around them? that dog's energy is very much on alert, as herding dogs are naturally.

It is a helpful thing to have lots of extra stimulation like that around, Sandy, my dog, learned to stick to me like that a a pup and is daddies little helper and as long as she isn't under foot and in the way, you dont even know she is there when working. Bonus is the horses getting used to her.

If you mean for this session to learn head down, it is one take uncut so you see the whole thing if I remember correctly. Most of this series you see the whole sessions and most of the sessions.

@@peartreeranch Thanks! Love your channel. I’ve been working with a rescue that has learned to freeze: like head up, no blinking etc. He’s been at the sanctuary for like 10 years, but very little exposure to people. He’s completely obedient in all his groundwork and everything, just has this “grin and bear it”😬 look in his whole demeanor. I was doing the flag for like 20 minutes today before any sign of relaxation.
