Can’t really say it’s last minute, there’s a small gap in between the time line from when rafe and Evelyn met going through medical to rafe and Danny at base and then finally meeting in NYC, it’s not like they can get in contact with each other for him to let her know that his request for the Eagle squadron was granted until he finally got the chance it just happens to be right after the day he finally saw her again that he had to leave. If they killed Rafe, I would have hated this movie so much...Death of Danny is some what justice to Rafe , after all he had been through..
