Muscles actually most often tear in eccentric contraction (where they are at their greatest stretch point) more often than concentric - which would mean at the bottom of the bench rep for a pec.

Think about how people tear their bicep while dead lifting with an over/under grip. It’s always the bicep in the under grip position that tears. Elbow is fully extended and bicep is at maximal stretch (ie eccentrically contracted). I would definitely get an MRI if it were my pec coming from an orthopaedic resident.

Sorry to say as a former P-lifter, who had the exact same tear, your days of heavy benching are over IF, you do not adjust your bench style. It took me 1 year of self rehab to recover to full strength and I changed my bench style. Check out Scot Mendelson's present day bench form, not easy to master...but he works around one of the worst pec tears ever. Suppose a slingshot will help along the way as well. @dogmapile5832
@dogmapile5832 3 жыл бұрын
@@truthvibes3330 but if he was flat, the safety bars would have caught the Olympic bar and stopped the movement before his pec was torn. Notice he was injured at the very end of his concentric phase of movement. His arch added stress to the pec during a range of motion that would have been much different (meaning safer) had he been flat on his back. To summarize, it's harder to bench heavier weights flat on your back with feet in the air - but at the same time, it is a bit safer because the safeties catch the weight easier at the bottom of the movement, compared to when one's body is contorted with an arch .

@@finestnostalgia I think you're misinformed. For MUSCLE tears they actually don't repair those with surgery. Muscle tears (or muscle strains) will simply repair on their own as the fibers heal together. A bump or gap will be present but functionally the muscle will return to normal. Only when a muscle tears from the bone at the tendon will surgery be required.
@themaverickfiles2020
@themaverickfiles2020 3 жыл бұрын
Ah thank god you don’t have to have surgery man. You’re so young too for all that shit but based on what you do injury can always happen no matter what. Before you said it, I said the same thing when you mentioned how the weight wasn’t being pressed at the time of the injury. Less contraction equates to less of a tear which is definitely what saved you. I can concur to that because I tore my left bicep at the elbow last year when I was moving a washing machine and since the weight wasn’t being lifted, I had merely tried to pull and drag it but before the machine moved I felt “the pop” followed by immediate pain but it didn’t cause a shit load of discoloration. I just had 3 cm of retraction according to my MRI results. The results said I had a full tear but my doctor was galvanized at the results because he said my arm felt strong and the tendon didn’t feel detached from the bone. I’ve since been doing bicep curls again but I still have a pain in my tendon area that hasn’t gone away completely. It’s probably from the scar tissue or some shit. Anyway, just give yourself time to heal. Hoping you make a swift recovery.

Once again, people are confusing a pec TENDON tear and a pec MUSCLE tear. A muscle tear will have a bump but will heal on it's own and will be pretty much 100% functional. A tendon tear will have a dramatic change to the pec and will never be 100% functional without surgery to reattach the tendon to the bone it broke away from.

You won't see the full impact of a pec tear for months or even years. As you go on your pec will retract further. This isn't a good tear to have (Muscle to tendon). You'd have been better off in the long run with tendon to bone it at least would be repairable. I had the same tear you have happen to my left pec and you'll get back a solid 80% of your strength but you're playing with fire if you think you'll be able to push heavy weight again. I am guessing that you will do the same foolish thing again. Bench in a power cage with the rods set at 1" or 2" above the chest. Keep elbows closer to sides and maybe hands closer together.

I think this kind of confirms Nick's not natural anymore. I don't know if he even still claims to be, but I do think it's important for those out there to realize his numbers aren't attainable to 99% of people and only genetic freaks or fake natty's can do such. What gives it away is muscle tears like these just simply do not happen to naturals, period end of discussion. Usually, these types of things happen when you are past your natural boundaries and or when someone uses ridiculously poor form. I'm not trying to call Nick out, but simply bring light to the possibility in case there are some young impressionable lifters who watch the channel. It's not fair to them to put false hope in their minds. Chasing and devoting all your time to strength training is not a good idea if you think it'll make you bigger and stronger when there are boundaries that simply can't be crosses without enhancement.
